A team reports that two drugs show promise in rejuvenating lung epithelial progenitor cells damaged by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In their study, the group identified certain proteins involved in epithelial generation for targeting with prostanoids and tested them under different scenarios. COPD is a disease of the lungs that develops when the immune system overreacts to conditions, such as smoke inhalation, and damages epithelial progenitor cells in the lungs. The job of epithelial progenitor cells is to produce new cells lining the lungs to keep them healthy. In their absence, patients experience shortness of breath and excess mucus...

Dr. Anthony Fauci, by not ruling out further COVID-19 restrictions over the disease's latest variant, is "misinterpreting the data," Sen. Rand Paul said Thursday on Newsmax. "If you look at the data right now, we have the lowest amount of people getting infected each day," the Kentucky Republican said on Newsmax's "National Report." "If you look at the data, we have the lowest amount of people in the intensive care unit. If you look at the data, we have the lowest amount of people dying since the pandemic began. So really, what we're seeing is the waning ebb of the...

The U.S. breakeven 10 year (USGGBE10 Index) went above 3% for the first time EVER. Breakeven inflation is the difference between the nominal yield on a fixed-rate investment and the real yield (fixed spread) on an inflation-linked investment of similar maturity and credit quality. Way to go, Joe!

Two Republican governors vetoed legislation this week that would prohibit transgender girls from competing in girls’ sports. Gov. Spencer Cox of Utah and Gov. Eric Holcomb of Indiana felt it was more important to protect transgender people than the girls who would be victimized by boys competing as girls. A similar bill was vetoed by Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota in 2021. In addition to failing to protect girl athletes, they are double-crossing the people that voted them into office. The constituents of each state overwhelmingly support such legislation. It’s these types of betrayals that led Republican voters to...

Sen. Rand Paul on Thursday added complications to the Senate’s final passage of a measure to suspend normal trade relations with Moscow, handing a blow to Democrats who had hoped to give President Biden more tough-on-Russia ammunition during his visit to Brussels to meet with European allies. The bill would revoke Russia’s permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) status, and is part of a broad trade action in coordination with the European Union and Group of Seven (G7) countries. The measure gives President Biden broader leeway to enact tariffs on products from the country and further weaken Russia’s economy in response...

Some of the world’s biggest oil traders expect oil prices to exceed $200 per barrel by the end of the year, the Financial Times reported, citing opinions shared at its Commodity Global Summit this week. “Wakey, wakey. We are not going back to normal business in a few months,” said Pierre Andurand, who has been super bullish on oil for a while. “I think we’re losing the Russian supply on the European side forever.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced Thursday that he will oppose President Biden's first U.S. Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, even after going into the confirmation process with an "open mind." "After studying the nominee’s record and watching her performance this week, I cannot and will not support Judge Jackson for a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court," McConnell said from the Senate floor.

The Minnesota Zoo announced Thursday that during a routine medical examination on Wednesday, its 12-year-old Amur tiger experienced cardiac failure and died. The tiger was born in the Czech Republic in 2009 and given the name Putin, then lived at the Denmark Zoo for six years before arriving in Minnesota. At the time of cardiac failure, the tiger was undergoing a preventative health exam, which included sample collection, according to a news release from the zoo. According to the zoo, specimen collection is important due to the globally-threatened nature of the Amur tiger — there are approximately 103 Amur tigers...

THIRD WEEK OF LENT LUKE 11:14-23 Friends, in today’s Gospel, we learn of a person possessed by a demon. Jesus meets the man and drives out the demon, but then is immediately accused of being in league with Satan. Some of the witnesses said, “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.” Jesus’ response is wonderful in its logic and laconicism: “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?” The demonic power is always one of...

“…. Canada, once a symbol of the modern world, has become a symbol of civil rights violations under your quasi-liberal boot in recent months. We watched how you trample women with horses, how you block the bank accounts of single parents so that they can’t even pay their children’s education and medicine, that they can’t pay utilities, mortgages for their homes.”“To you,” he continues, speaking to Trudeau, “these may be liberal methods; for many citizens of the world, it is a dictatorship of the worst kind. Rest assured that the citizens of the world, united, can stop any regime that...

Earlier this week, we quoted the heads of some of the world’s biggest independent energy trades, who spoke at the FT Commodities Global Summit in Lausanne, Switzerland and unveiled a dire forecast for the diesel market: “The thing that everybody’s concerned about will be diesel supplies. Europe imports about half of its diesel from Russia and about half of its diesel from the Middle East,” said Russell Hardy, chief of Switzerland-based oil trader Vitol. “That systemic shortfall of diesel is there.” As a reminder, Russian supplies account for about 15% of Europe’s diesel consumption, according to the FT which carried...

An oil and gas prices expert warned that California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to give out free gas cards will drive up prices and inflation even higher. Newsom turned heads on Thursday when he announced his proposal for $400 gas rebate cards to be given to Golden State motorists to offset the skyrocketing gas prices. Patrick De Haan — who runs the gas price-monitoring service GasBuddy — was quick to express this concern, tweeting several times about how bad of an idea Newsom proposed

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell announced Thursday that he will vote against confirming Ketanji Brown Jackson, saying he “cannot and will not” support the groundbreaking nominee for a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court. While McConnell’s opposition was not unexpected and Jackson’s confirmation is still on track, his declaration coming only hours after the Senate Judiciary Committee wrapped up four days of hearings probably will lead many fellow Republicans to follow suit. Democrats can confirm Jackson, the first Black woman nominated for the nation’s highest court, without any GOP support in the 50-50 Senate, where Vice President...
