Third Sunday of Lent Luke 13:1-9 Friends, today’s Gospel includes the parable of a fig tree that bears no fruit. This is a standard trope in the theological literature of Israel: the tree that bears no fruit is evocative of the moral person who bears no spiritual fruit. Every single person has a mission: to be a conduit of the divine grace into the world. Planted in God—think of Jesus’ image of the vine and the branches—they are meant to bring forth the fruits of love, peace, compassion, justice, nonviolence. And notice that this should be effortless. The closer God...

Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) said on this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday” that former President Donald Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President and Volodymyr Zelensky that led to his first impeachment “obviously” was not perfect. Host Trace Gallagher said, “Democrats have pointed to former President Trump’s relationship with Zelenskyy, reported asking for political help in exchange for aid. President Trump also reportedly ordered Mike Pence to not attend President Zelensky’s inauguration back in 2019. Does the former president deserve some criticism for what some say is a poor record on Ukraine and Russia?”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed Israeli lawmakers in an online speech via Zoom Sunday evening. Days after his address to the US Congress, Zelensky gave a speech online to Israeli Knesset Members and government ministers, emphasizing his Jewish heritage and the unity between Israel and Diaspora Jewish communities. Zelensky opened his address with a quote from Golda Meir, a native of Kyiv, and claimed that Ukrainians and Jews worldwide share a connection “in the past and the present.” “I don’t have to convince you that our peoples are connected, the Jews and the Ukrainians in the past and the present,...

I hope and pray that most of our readers are at least reticent if not adamantly opposed to going to war with Russia. One can support Ukraine, oppose Russia, and still not want the United States to get involved militarily or to escalate our response to Russia to the point that they attack NATO, drawing us into WWIII.But there are Democrats and RINOs who are warmongering us towards direct involvement in the regional conflict prompted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They are getting louder. Anecdotally on social media, I’m seeing more “conservatives” calling for actions like no-fly zones that will...

The main suspects, who were arrested, were born in 1988 and 1990, he said, adding that terrorism was not at this stage considered a motive. Verheyen said the two came from La Louviere, a town near the French border in Belgium's rust belt, and are not known to authorities for similar acts. Belgian towns and villages host many street carnivals around the season of Lent, with the parades in Binche and Aalst the best known internationally. Strepy-Bracquegnies involves participants dressed up as "Gilles", extravagantly attired comical figures who are "called out" to the parade in the early hours. La Louvriere...

A frontline doctor said the right response to a future wave of COVID-19 should be based on focused protection without government intervention or medical mandates. Currently, a new variant—the Omicron sub-variant BA.2—is quickly spreading across the United States, Europe, China, and other parts of the world. Early reports indicate that the variant seems more transmissible, but there’s no conclusion yet as to whether it will cause a large spike in infections. As of March 12, the BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron is estimated to be 23.1 percent of the coronavirus variants circulating in the United States, according to the Centers for...

Several Israeli lawmakers criticize Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for drawing comparisons between the Holocaust and Russia's invasion of Ukraine during his speech to Knesset members. "I admire the Ukraine president and support the Ukrainian people in heart and deed, but the terrible history of the Holocaust cannot be rewritten," Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel tweets. Hendel notes part of Nazi Germany's genocide of Jews "was also carried out in the land of Ukraine." "The war is terrible but the comparison to the horrors of the Holocaust and the final solution is outrageous." he says. Hebrew media outlets quote unnamed senior ministers...

This nonsense that Ukraine can defeat Putin is propaganda and it seems to cheer every death of a Ukrainian to justify hating Putin and all Russians even more. This is not just reckless, but highly dangerous for the world. It ensures that you will lose. Read Putin’s biography, “Vladimir Putin. Life History” where he states: “I just understood that if you want to win, then you have to fight to the finish in every fight, as if it was the last and decisive battle…you need to assume that there is no retreat.” Zelensky is a fool who is too caught...

White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci said Sunday that he does not believe the new variant of the coronavirus will lead to a surge in cases or a return to pandemic lockdowns. During an appearance on ABC's "This Week," Fauci told host George Stephanopoulos that the new BA.2 variant is more transmissible than the original omicron variant of the virus. He said it is about 50-60 percent more transmissible and could become the dominant variant in the U.S. According to Fauci, the new variant is "about 80 plus percent, 85 percent of the isolate" whereas, in the U.S., it...

There are strong indications that a potentially significant severe weather outbreak could materialize on multiple days this week across the south-central and southeastern U.S. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has been highlighting this threat since Tuesday, when it issued a rare severe weather outlook a week in advance of next week’s threat of destructive storms.

Ukraine claimed today that its forces had shot dead the deputy commander of Russia's Black Sea Fleet in another significant blow to Vladimir Putin's forces. First rank captain Andrey Paliy, 51, is the only senior naval officer allegedly killed in the war in Ukraine, although Kyiv claims to have slain five army generals. Col Sergei Sukharev, of the 331st Guards Parachute Assault Regiment from Kostroma, was killed on March 18 and Andrei Sukhovetsky, 47, was killed during a special operation by a sniper on March 3. In addition, Major-General Oleg Mityaev, 47, commander of the army's 150th motorised rifle division,...

Three weeks after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, the war is starting to have devastating effects not only on the ground, but in many countries that rely on Ukraine’s important wheat production. The United Nations has warned of a “hunger hurricane”, which is already starting to be felt in Northern Africa. FRANCE 24 takes a closer look. On March 14, the UN’s Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a stark warning about the wider threats of the war in Ukraine: world hunger. “We must do everything possible to avert a hurricane of hunger and a meltdown of the global food system,”...

Citing the year-over-year inflation rate of 8% posted this past February, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) sought to reassure everyone that "their government would be taken care of" as she announced "an additional $134 million has been put at our disposal to ensure that our work is not impeded by rising prices." "I know that a lot of Americans have been concerned about how hard inflation will hit it's elected representatives," the Speaker said. "They need not worry that we won't be prepared to weather the storm. The added $134 million is an increase of 21% over last year. Unless...

Kamala Harris, one step from the presidency, is an unmitigated disaster on all fronts. She's failed at everything she's tried. She's famous for being the boss from hell, unable to keep staff. She's very, very, very unpopular with voters. So surprise, surprise, the political vultures are circling. The latest is a name we haven't seen in a while, none other than socialist Bernie Sanders: According to Politico: Top figures from Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign are privately encouraging Ro Khanna to run for president in 2024 if Joe Biden doesn’t seek a second term, giving the California congressman an important stamp...

“‘Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me’” (Matthew 5:11). Faithfulness to Christ will bring enemies of the gospel who will “falsely say all kinds of evil against” us. Whereas “insults” are abusive words said to our faces, these “evil” things are primarily abusive words said behind our backs. Jesus’ critics said of Him, “Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!” (Matt. 11:19). If the world said that of the sinless Christ, what things can His followers expect to...
