Xiulu Ruan, a board-certified Alabama pain specialist, was sentenced to 21 years in federal prison for prescribing opioid analgesics "outside the usual course of professional medical practice." According to the appeals court that upheld his conviction, it did not matter whether he sincerely believed he was doing what a physician is supposed to do. That ruling, which is the focus of a case the Supreme Court heard on Tuesday, conflates negligence with criminal liability, invites the Drug Enforcement Administration to usurp state medical regulators and encourages prosecutions that have a chilling effect on pain treatment. If it is allowed to...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government has a fresh warning to states seeking billions of dollars from President Joe Biden’s infrastructure law to widen roads: Protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists or risk losing funds. In a new report submitted to Congress and obtained by The Associated Press, the Department of Transportation says it will aim to prioritize the safety and health of the multiple users of a typical 21st century roadway, from riders of public transit and electric scooters to Uber rideshare pickups and people delivering goods. Projects such as bike paths and traffic roundabouts, enhanced sidewalks, pedestrian...

Biden tried to downplay his plummeting approval but instead offered a speech riddled with falsehoods and contradictions. In a desperate bid to console a nation reeling from crises he created, President Joe Biden delivered his first official State of the Union Address on Tuesday. The Democrat attempted to downplay his plummeting approval by promising to do better in his second year in office but instead offered a speech riddled with falsehoods and contradictions. While Biden’s address was supposed to breathe new life into his presidency, Americans are meanwhile plagued with rising prices, a southern border crisis, and now an overseas...

Thunderous applause is expected Tuesday night when resident Joe Biden will pay tribute to the outnumbered and outgunned Ukrainians resisting the Russian invasion. But words like liberty and democracy, which Biden invoked on Thursday to praise these heroes, are not enough. Words have to be backed up by military might and energy dominance. Putin's predatory ambitions will not stop with Ukraine. He's likely eyeing Latvia, Lithuania and other eastern European countries once under Soviet domination and now part of NATO. To ensure that NATO holds together to meet this challenge, Biden should announce a 180-degree turn in American energy policy...

Earlier reports stated that the financial director for Gazprom, the largest publicly-listed natural gas company in the world and the largest company in Russia by revenue, has been found dead by suicide in St. Petersburg is inaccurate. Gazprom 'Financial Director' is not dead. The person found dead is the 61-year-old Alexander Tyuliakov. Alexander Tyulakov was the Deputy General Director of the Unified Settlement Center (UCC)of Gazprom for corporate security. Gazprom is a Russian majority state owned multinational energy corporation.

Regardless of what any American feels about what steps we should take in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's aggressive incursion into Ukraine, for sure most are appalled by what he has done. As Putin moves to regain Russian control over nations that once were part of the Soviet sphere, we ought to think about the circumstances under which the Soviet Union collapsed to consider how it all might be reversed. In March 1983, President Ronald Reagan spoke to the National Association of Evangelicals in Orlando, Florida, and delivered what would famously become known as the speech in which he...

As per my previous post, the situation in Ukraine should be a wake-up call to every sentient person to ditch the fantasies about wind and solar energy ASAP, and make sure that we have real energy that works. The wind/solar delusion, combined with active suppression of fossil fuels and even of nuclear, are basically financing Vladimir Putin’s war via increased oil and gas exports and higher prices. Meanwhile, the brave Ukrainian armed forces are certainly not running on the wind and sun; nor are the Russians who are attacking them. In 2021, after finally achieving energy independence under President Trump,...

According to local outlet Ukraine NOW: "The mayor of Konotop says the orcs [Russians] have issued an ultimatum: either he surrenders the city or the city is blown up by artillery. In the video showing Mr Semenikhin talking to his people, he says: "Either I surrender the city to them, or they will completely destroy it." Questioned whether they want to fight back against Russia, the citizens can be heard shouting: "Yes.

WASHINGTON, Saturday, March 1. News from Nashville, dated yesterday, has been received. The enemy is retreating toward the Tennessee River. The outposts of our forces are ten miles on the Memphis Railroad. It is stated that the rebels have evacuated Columbus. A body is said to be concentrating at Chattanooga, [in the Southern part of the State.] A great change has already occurred in the political feeling...

The decision by Russian President Vladimir Putin to launch an illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine has dominated global headlines and social media for the last week. It has also generated a wave of questions about Bible prophecy and the End of Days. I’m receiving questions from Christian pastors and lay people — and from Jewish rabbis and scholars, as well as journalists — all over the world. While there are many variations, they generally fall into two main categories. First, are there biblically prophetic implications to this horrible new war in Ukraine and fears throughout Europe that Putin may...

Although Africa has contributed relatively little to the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions, the continent has suffered some of the world’s heaviest impacts of climate change, from famine to flooding. Yet from its coral reefs to its highest peaks, the reverberations of human-caused global warming will only get worse, according to a new United Nations report The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicted Monday that Saharan flooding, heat and drought will increase, Africa’s rich array of wildlife and plants will decline and glaciers on its most iconic mountains will disappear in coming decades. On a continent already grappling with high...

Zhivitsky's direct speech: "the conversation with the Russians in Konotop, authorized by me from the military administration, lasted about 12 minutes. I was on speakerphone during the negotiations. The agreement is as follows: There can be no question of any change of power. They are interested in law and order. There will be no entry of troops. The Ukrainian flag is still in place. There is an agreement that we will not shoot at them and there will be no mutual provocations. They remain in their positions. The unhindered passage of public transport and services, ambulances, food trucks, and humanitarian...

Paris (AFP) – Climate change has already caused "irreversible losses" for Nature, UN experts have said, warning that if emissions are not cut quickly, warming could trigger chain reactions with potentially catastrophic effects for all species, including humans. All forms of life on Earth are linked together by a vast web of causes and consequences, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said in a new report on the impacts of global warming published this week. Those effects are severe and wide ranging across the world's natural habitats. "Climate change has caused substantial damages, and increasingly irreversible losses, in terrestrial,...

Russia's war on Ukraine comes at a moment of political weakness for resident Joe Biden. His job approval rating is low, low enough to drag down his party's chances in the midterms, Americans are angry watching their standard of living diminished by inflation, there is lingering frustration about the president's handling of COVID and there are widespread doubts whether the 79-year-old Biden -- the oldest president in the nation's history -- is physically and mentally up to the job. But the war, as emergencies sometimes do, has lent a new look to Biden's presidency. "A presidency transformed," was the headline...

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has occupied all of the media's attention, leaving several other international priorities of the Biden administration to continue without much scrutiny. One of these is the effort to revive a version of the Obama-era Iran nuclear deal. From the outside, it would appear that Iran holds most of the cards when it comes to a new nuclear deal. Even though deadlines for reaching a new accord have come and gone, the U.S. has granted extensions of sanctions waivers and kept the negotiations alive. Whether this is driven by a dire need for a foreign policy...

Canada is becoming a police state. The Canadian House of Commons has abdicated its responsibilities. This has a significant effect on Canadian gun owners. The Emergency Act allows the Trudeau administration to punish people for things they legally did months or years ago, particularly political contributions. No Court order is required. The Emergency Act invoked by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is limited by law in several ways. One of those is a requirement that both houses of Parliament consider the Act within seven “sitting” days, continually debate the act, and then vote on it. The Emergency Measure (the Act is...
