According to local outlet Ukraine NOW: "The mayor of Konotop says the orcs [Russians] have issued an ultimatum: either he surrenders the city or the city is blown up by artillery.
In the video showing Mr Semenikhin talking to his people, he says: "Either I surrender the city to them, or they will completely destroy it."
Questioned whether they want to fight back against Russia, the citizens can be heard shouting: "Yes.

The Orthodox don’t do Ash Wednesday, but their Great Lent starts next Monday this year. (Well, technically with vespers on the Sunday before, known as Cheesefare Sunday.)

The Mayor of Odessa, Henadiy Trukhanov, has declared that residents of Odessa did not want to believe right up to the last minute that there would be a war. But Odessans are ready to protect their families.
I remember how the Japanese were propagandized by their government to the point that they flung themselves off cliffs to avoid what they were told the American would do to them as we invaded. It was so unnecessary.
