What if vaccines were designed to spread from one person to another — just like viruses themselves — rather than be injected into each individual to trigger an immune system response? If that were the case, it would mean perhaps only five per cent of the UK population — or three million people — would need to be ‘immunised’. The rest would then ‘catch’ the vaccine as it spread rapidly across the country in airborne droplets passed on via close contact with others, just as colds and flu already spread. … One of the most advanced projects, funded by the...

LAKEWAY, Texas (AP) — Fighting to stay in office, George P. Bush — the last of the Bush family still on the ballot — greeted a small outdoor crowd at an Austin brewery sounding like most Republicans running in Texas’ primary Tuesday. He’ll secure the border. He’ll support police. He didn’t mention Donald Trump, but his campaign passed out leaflets showing him with the former president: the man who mocked Bush’s father, shoved aside the Bushes as the GOP’s standard-bearer and isn’t endorsing him for Texas attorney general.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took a swipe at former President Donald Trump on Monday for calling Russian President Vladamir Putin a “genius” as troops prepared to invade Ukraine. The jab is the latest sign of friction between the two longtime friends and fellow Republicans that began after Christie criticized Trump over the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. Both men are possible 2024 White House contenders.

Ukraine's ambassador to the United Nations on Monday read out what he said were the final text messages from a Russian soldier to his mother - describing his horror at the unfolding war before he was killed. It came during an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine's representative, Sergiy Kyslytsya, made an impassioned plea for help, holding up a screenshot of the soldier's texts. 'Mom I'm no longer in Crimea,' they began. 'I'm not in training sessions.' His mother asks: 'Where are you then? Papa is asking whether I can...

Troops are trained in rote set pieces, with no time devoted to improvising if things don’t go as planned. Military operations designed to take place sequentially—Step 1, then 2, then 3, etc.—fell apart, catastrophically. If Step 2 hit a big obstacle, the by-the-book soldiers moved on to Step 3 anyway. Therefore, large troop-transport planes tried to land, even though the airport hadn’t been completely secured and Ukrainian air defense systems hadn’t been destroyed. As a result, two Il-76 transport planes, each carrying 100 airborne troops, were shot down. Tanks aren’t supposed to roll through hostile territory all alone. They need...
