Toyota Motor on Tuesday halted operations at all of its plants in Japan after a major supplier was hit by a cyberattack, disrupting the automaker's parts supply management system.
The company is suspending 28 lines at 14 plants. Subsidiaries Hino Motors and Daihatsu Motor will also halt operations at some plants in Japan on Tuesday.
The announcement that operations would be halted came on Monday, confirming an earlier Nikkei report.
The automakers are still determining whether they will be able to return to normal operations after Wednesday. The shutdown will affect production of around 13,000 vehicles, or 4% to 5% of Toyota's monthly output in Japan.
"We apologize to our relevant suppliers and customers for any inconvenience this may cause," Toyota said.

These ransomware types need to be given summary executions.
I agree. Horse thieves were once hanged. This is much worse.
...Nah....
Banchodes no doubt
Corporations do not need their critical infrastructure to be online via the web. Advertising and sales info, etc...,yes. But, critical infrastructure should not be.
There are means available to contain such computer communication internally and between critical partners exclusively without exposure to the WWW.

“These ransomware types need to be given summary executions.”
personally, i’d like to see them burned live at the stake on the washington mall with all national feeds covering the execution ... just one such event might be enough to convince the rest ...

If computer systems were designed properly then this would never happen. The main system should not be directly accessible via the internet. That should be handled by another computer(sub system). The only possible interaction between the two would then be for the main system to look at data on the subsystem and pull it in or put it out. And only data within strict parameters can be pulled in.
Anything fancy should only be able to be done with direct(Non Internet) access to the system by an administrator.
Imagine in the not to distant future that you are driving along in a electric car with short range mandated by the gov’t that tracks your every move and like OnStar can record what you say in the vehicle. You listen to conservative radio, you speak out against the democrats and rinos, you post on the internet words they do not like.
Your vehicle stops miles from home. Why did it stop? You checked and have a full charge.
You try to call for help but the cell phone does not work.
A passerby calls for help for you but no tow truck is available as they have been told not to help.
Later you find out your bank account has been frozen. Your place of work has been notified you have been charged with “mischief charges”. Your vehicle is later confiscated.
Another scenario is a hacker stops all Toyota’s everywhere and sends a message to deposit money in several untraceable ways.

Agree. Stunning that Toyota is this incompetent. They should fire their entire IT leadership and hire a few good pen testers.
