A week ago the government announced that the consumer price index rose 7.5% from a year ago, marking the fastest increase since February 1982 (which was a very bad year in case you don’t remember). Yesterday Biden went to Ohio where he touted his “growing” economy – if by “growing” he means inflation. In the same visit he proposed $1 billion in funding for a “greening” clean up of the Great Lakes. Now, it’s hard to be opposed to cleaning up the Great Lakes, but timing-wise one might question the need to do so while inflation is running unchecked. Even...

Surprise! US existing home sales in January rose to 6.50 million units SAAR versus the expected 6.10 million units. That is a 6.7% increase over December. The disturbing news is the continued lack of available inventory that peaked in Q4 2007 and has continued its decline to today … the lowest level of available inventory since 1981. Despite the Fed’s massive stimulus that they allegedly will take away. Median price of existing home sales rose to 15.4% YoY. Shipping in the area was warned that the 650-foot-long Felicity Ace was adrift near Portugal's Azores Islands after the crew were taken off on Wednesday, Portuguese navy spokesman Commander José Sousa Luís said. Two California lawmakers have proposed removing the word “squaw,” a slur against Native American women, from all geographic features and place names in the state. Assembly Bill 2022, introduced by Assemblyman James Ramos, D-Highland, and Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, D-Bell Gardens, would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2024. Ramos said the word is an idiom that came into use during the westward expansion of America, and is not a tribal word. “AB 2022 would ban the use of the S-word and establish a process for renaming locations with that offensive racial and sexist term which began as derogatory word used...

The Jewish state’s dream of warm peace with its Arab neighbors has eluded it for more than 72 years. In September 2020, President Donald Trump helped engineer the Abraham Accords between Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. The very treaty signing on the White House lawn projected human warmth, and signaled a warm peace. Subsequently, Sudan and Morocco joined the normalization of relations with Israel. It is true that peace, as opposed to war, came much earlier than September 2020. Israel signed a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979 and with Jordan in 1994. These peace treaties, however,...

Greek rescue forces are desperately trying to save two people trapped onboard a stricken ferry amid fears that 14 passengers were missing nearly eight hours after the ship burst into flames. A Super Puma helicopter had attempted several times to approach the Euroferry Olympia, an Italian liner en route to Brindisi, when the fire broke out at around 4am. Four lifeboats carrying an estimated 279 people had meanwhile headed for the Ionian island of Corfu, where authorities were hoping to match arrivals with the passenger list assembled by crew. By midday, Hellenic navy ships, and at least three coastguard vessels,...

The foundation said he passed away peacefully and surrounded by family at the Utah Valley Hospital following a brief illness. The airman had...

Nearly a dozen men associated with the Brooklyn-based Woo gang were charged Thursday with allegedly stealing more than $4 million in COVID-19 relief cash — and boasting about the scam in a music video, the feds said. The 11 suspects – nine of whom live in Brooklyn – used personal information, including driver’s license numbers, from 800 people to submit unemployment claims worth about $20 million, according to a criminal complaint against them. The gang members were able to fleece some $4.3 million from the unemployment program between March 2020 and October 2021 as part of the scam, the feds...

A new bill aimed at giving a financial boost to low-income workers is gaining momentum. On Thursday, lawmakers and organization leaders weighed in on HB 4157 during its public hearing. Rep. Andrea Valderrama, D-Portland, is one of the chief sponsors of the bill. KATU talked with her on Wednesday as she was preparing for the public hearing. To be eligible for a one-time $600 check, workers had to file for Earned Income Tax Credits, a break for low- and middle-income families, on their 2020 tax filings. Valderrama estimates there are about 260,000 Oregonians who qualify. At $600 each, that equals...

Unbelief, the Opiate of the MassesReligion is the opiate of the masses.” In a single, swift turn of phrase, Marx had created a credo for the secular left. Opium, of course, is the drug of addicts; addicts cannot see beyond their chemical dependency. But if they were to lock themselves in a room and face the cold sweat withdrawals of truth, the addicts could be freed from their affliction. The veil of ignorance blinding their judgment would be torn away. Rationalist sobriety saves. But what if irreligion is the true opiate of the masses—what if unbelief is the valium of the...

An Illinois appellate court rejected Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s appeal of a lower court's ruling against a mask mandate in schools, writing the request is “moot” because the governor’s emergency COVID-19 rules already expired. The highly-anticipated decision from the three-member panel of the Illinois Fourth District Appellate Court was published just before midnight Thursday. In their decision, the appellate court justices wrote there is no “actual controversy” to decide. “Because the emergency rules voided by the TRO are no longer in effect, a controversy regarding the application of those rules no longer exists. Thus, the matter is moot,” the justices wrote....
