Oregon proposal aims to give low-wage workers $600 check

A new bill aimed at giving a financial boost to low-income workers is gaining momentum.

On Thursday, lawmakers and organization leaders weighed in on HB 4157 during its public hearing.

Rep. Andrea Valderrama, D-Portland, is one of the chief sponsors of the bill. KATU talked with her on Wednesday as she was preparing for the public hearing.

To be eligible for a one-time $600 check, workers had to file for Earned Income Tax Credits, a break for low- and middle-income families, on their 2020 tax filings.

Valderrama estimates there are about 260,000 Oregonians who qualify. At $600 each, that equals out to about $156 million. It's unclear where exactly that money would be coming from.

Well, h3ll, that's easy. They can tax the rich until they all leave Oregon.

I hate, hate, hate how brazen they are about buying vote with taxpayer money.

Taking taxes from one group and giving the cash directly to another is out right theft.

If memory serves, they wasted more than that on Cover Oregon, a similar amount on engineering studies for the failed Columbia River Crossing, and a multiple on the statewide emergency communication system (Oregon Wireless Interoperability Network, aka OWIN)...

...this beat goes on...

States are flush with money right now due to the 3 corona bills that passed. If states were smart they’d put it in the pension funds. But no they’ll spend until they are in the red again.

$600.00 buys a lot of coke or meth.

The fine print probably disqualifies Caucasians from eligibility.

So why work harder? Why keep up with technology? Just blame someone else and collect money for doing nothing.

This kind of thing never ends. Soon it will be $1,200, then $2,000, then up and away. Who is foolish enough to work in an environment like this?

It’s communism. Everyone should get the same pay. But they weren’t able to do that even in the Soviet Union. Doctors got more than laborers. Not hugely more but more.

My son graduated from college in June of that year. Started work in mid-July. When he did his taxes for that year, he called me up to tell me he was getting more money back than he had paid in taxes. He as about $500.00 to the good.

'Dad, this is crazy. I qualify as being poor cause I only worked half-a-year and I am getting money back?

'Welcome to the Democrat world' I told him.

He has voted Republican ever since.

White trash vote too. They may not get any openly spoken lip-service in the leftist platform, but if they are dependent victims, they are welcome under the umbrella. All ballots matter.

I would guess places like Wyoming, North Dakota and Idaho may already have done that. Maybe a tiny handful of others.

Fedzilla will probably be wanting it back to bail out the drunken sailors.

I remember the first covid stimulus checks hitting the homeless camp at the lake. One guy bought a new bike, a bunch of video games, probably a lot of weed. I think most of the money was spent at WalMart. Anyway, the bike was stolen, soon after.
