It has been a tough year for fans of American democracy. The sacking of the Capitol on Jan. 6 set the tone. Former President Donald Trump’s chokehold on the Republican Party continues to fuel its most unhinged impulses and elements. More than two-thirds of Republicans buy the lie that the 2020 election was stolen, according to a recent poll by Public Religion Research Institute, while 30 percent say violence may be needed to save the country. Too many party leaders who know better are playing along. The United States even made this year’s list of “backsliding” democracies, issued by the...

What's behind a liberal-media outlet like Morning Joe sounding so law-'n-order on Tuesday? From Joe Scarborough to Willie Geist to—yes!—even Al Sharpton, there was unanimous condemnation of "progressives," "permissive" prosecutors, and "latte liberals" for their soft-on-crime philosophy. The panel harshly condemned the low bail that led to the release of Darrell Brooks in Waukesha, Wisconsin, just 11 days before he allegedly killed five people and injured scores of others. he panel expressed similar outrage over the lax policies in cities like San Francisco, where the refusal to prosecute thieves has led to a wave of looting, or "smash and grab"...

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission voted Tuesday to declare a water shortage emergency amid a crushing drought in the state that threatens water supplies throughout the region, slapping a 5% surcharge on water users in the city. California is in the midst of one of the worst droughts in its history. The drought from 2011- 2017 was so intense that rainy seasons in 2017 and 2018 barely reversed the damage. Mountain snow in 2020 was not enough to fill the state’s reservoirs.

Pray For The Peace of JerusalemDaniel 3The Image of Gold and the Blazing Furnace 3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide,[a] and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. 2 He then summoned the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. 3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had...

On this date in 1539, the Spanish Inquisition had Aztec noble Don Carlos Ometochtzin (or Don Carlos Chichimecatecuhi, or Don Carlos Ahuachpitzactzin) burned at the stake for reverting to the pre-Columbian indigenous religion. Just another Mesoamerican depredation? Surprisingly, this execution stands out as an exception in the first generations of its conquest. It even cost the first bishop of Mexico, Juan de Zumarraga, a reprimand for his excess severity. Why? Certainly any European Christian would have had trouble with the Inquisition if, like Don Carlos (Spanish Wikipedia entry | English), he had been caught with idols of Xipe Totec in...

This week, a 39-year-old black man in Waukesha, Wisconsin, plowed a maroon Ford Escape into a Christmas parade of children and older women. Five people were killed and another 48 were injured. The motive of the suspect is unknown; if the media have their way, it will remain that way. The media apparently only care about why suspects commit violent acts when motives can be credited to their political enemies. There is one thing we do know: the suspect should not have been on the street. He had a rap sheet longer than the first five books of the Bible....

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm called on United States’ oil companies to increase production to try to help bring down the elevated prices Americans are paying at the pump. Granholm’s comments came during a Nov. 23 White House press briefing, hours after President Joe Biden ordered 50 million barrels of oil released from the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR)—the largest ever release. “We want to encourage [oil companies] to increase supply,” said Granholm. “We want supply to be increased both inside the United States and around the world so we can reduce the pressures at the pump.” Domestic oil production continues...

Feel free to cross-post this to other boards of which you may be a member. In keeping with the Thanksgiving spirit, I thought I'd put this up for those who are going to deep fry their turkey and especially for those who will be attempting to deep fry their first turkey. Make sure you use fresh peanut oil for the frying. You can reuse the oil up to 3 times (2 is preferable) if you're deep frying multiple turkeys. NOTE: If you have a deep fryer that says it can hold an 18 lb. turkey, DO NOT use a turkey...

If COVID-19 mass distribution becomes the new rage here in France among the double-jabbed, French Prime Minister Jean Castex just might be in the running for poster boy. Last weekend, some of us watched the big rugby match between France and the New Zealand All-Blacks, which aired live on TV from the Stade de France in Paris. It was impossible not to notice that the venue, which can only be accessed by those with a "health pass" QR code attesting to either a full course of jabs (which is currently two jabs, but will soon be three for certain demographics)...

A group of House Republicans has issued a truly terrifying warning that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) could be laying the groundwork for a backdoor federal gun registry.Republican Rep. Michael Cloud of Texas sent a letter to acting ATF Director Marvin Richardson that was signed by 51 of his colleagues. Fox News reported that in the letter, the Republicans expressed the fears that they have about a proposed rule by the agency that they think could eventually lead to a backdoor gun registry around Congress’ prohibition. The rule in question, which was proposed recently, removes a 20-year...

Our Heritage Stories. In our family, after a savory thanksgiving feast when everyone is full, we sit in front of the fire and I tell a story about our heritage. I have Scottish ancestry and I told a story about how a distant relative, a the Maine woodsman, married an Indian princess. This year I have a new story to add to our heritage collection. This fall we installed a wood stove in our recently built “cabin room” addition. My husband had just made the hearth/fire proof floor out on the back deck and covered it up in black plastic...

Truck drivers say they understand commuters’ frustrations this morning but say their voices must be heard as they made their way to the center of Dublin. The protestors began arriving at Leinster House to voice their concerns about rising fuels prices and the cost this is having on their businesses. Lorries are currently parked at Merrion Square and on Dawson Street, while Kildare Street has been closed off by Gardaí. There were disruptions on routes into and around the city earlier this morning, and now in the Kildare Street area, as trucks start to park up near the Dáil. Gardaí...

All last week the scuttlebutt in the media and in Washington was that President Biden was leaning toward appointing progressive favorite Lael Brainard to replace the “dangerous” (in Lizzie Warren’s words) Jerome Powell as chair of the Federal Reserve, because Brainard pledged to make the Fed a full partner in pushing the climate and “anti-racist” agenda by pressuring financial institutions not to make loans to any fossil fuel companies. Never mind that the legal authority for this kind of thumb-on-the-scale of capital allocation cannot be found in any statute governing the Fed, but who needs statutory authority when you have...
