You’re most probably correct. But the wild card is Biden (or to be more accurate, Biden’s handlers). Failing dictators often gin up conflict in order to distract the masses.
Anyway, this is yet another instance where we need an adult in charge (Trump).

The only thing Russia wants is to pull out completely and it would mean the complete collapse of the Ukrainian economy, where the government would have to explain why the “divorce” with Russia and Western ties didn’t work as advertised.
The idiotic Ukrainian government failed to secure a coal contract with any supplier and imposed an embargo on Belarus in concert with the EU, forgetting that they are getting electricity from NEPs in Belarus.
That’s why the chit show to close the Baltic gas pipeline.
Their land transit is a single remaining source of energy.
30-40 generators stopped last week in Ukraine over the shortage of coal. Can anyone imagine what it would be like in January?
That is the reason for talks of war, the regime won’t survive the winter and Russia has nothing to do with this.

USA, alleged defenders of both, is about to have a leadership crisis - managed bypoliticians who don’t care about Ukraine, Taiwan, etc.
Expect Biden will soon be deposed, during which Russia & China & others will take the opportunity to present a multi-front conflict to those who want no conflict and can ignore it.
The trouble between Ukraine and Russia is caused by a cabal of “American” state department manipulators who want (for reasons impossible to understand) war with Russia.
When my kids challenged me in October 2016 about my vote for Trump, I gave them an entente between the US and Russia if Trump were elected as my reason #1 (this was long before RussiaRussiaRussia was a big thing).
I still believe this is a reasonable policy goal.

It’s a VERY reasonable policy goal. The two greatest threats to the West today are radical Islam and Communist China. The U.S. and Russia would make natural allies in that regard.
But such an alliance could easily fall apart due to U.S. stupidity (like sending warships into the Black Sea) or Russian stupidity (like invading the Ukraine).
Just my two cents.

I get what you’re saying but to Russia, who has experienced costly invasions, a buffer zone around their country is of paramount importance. So from their viewpoint its not stupidity. It’s a matter of national survival.
Unlike us, they WILL defend their borders.

I kinda agree with you. And the eastward creep of NATO has to be concern to Moscow. I called Russia’s meddling in the Ukraine “stupid” only in that it would weaken any hypothetical U.S.-Russian alliance.
