It has been a tough year for fans of American democracy. The sacking of the Capitol on Jan. 6 set the tone. Former President Donald Trump’s chokehold on the Republican Party continues to fuel its most unhinged impulses and elements. More than two-thirds of Republicans buy the lie that the 2020 election was stolen, according to a recent poll by Public Religion Research Institute, while 30 percent say violence may be needed to save the country.
Too many party leaders who know better are playing along. The United States even made this year’s list of “backsliding” democracies, issued by the International IDEA think tank, which cited a “visible deterioration” that began in 2019.
More prosaically, there have been the usual obstructionism and attempts to make the government as dysfunctional as possible that we have come to expect from congressional Republicans.
Not exactly a glowing advertisement for the American way.
But there have been exceptions, select Republicans who have put the public good ahead of partisan and personal interests — some more dramatically than others. Not that these folks are saints, or even consistent in their commitment. But these days, even glimmers of responsible, pro-democratic behavior amid the miasma of Trumpism merit a shout-out. So in the spirit of the season, let us give thanks for these rare Republican pockets of character and duty.

And there will be fewer still come January 2023.
But at the same time I bet this author just HATES Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin.
The projection is so obvious anymore, even the dems must see it. It’s not Trump ignoring civil liberties.
If we can’t vote this scum out, I predict some sniping will commence.
Protect the Constitution from 300m.
To NYT: Get stuffed.
As usual, they get it 100% backwards.
If you sell-out to the left, you’re likely to get a positive mention in the NYT.
The NYT and lamestream media aren’t fooling any of the rank-and-file republican voters. There is a tidal wave coming for the RINO traitors in the 2022 primaries, especially in the state legislatures that gave the Steal to the Vegetable by their refusal to enforce voter ID and allow the cheat-by-mail-in ballots to be counted nearly a week after Election Day. RINOs are the reason for the woke clown world we now live in, and RINOs must pay for it in 2022.
I read the comments over at the NYTimes and the people congratulating the author for this overboard piece of truffle was astounding. Over and over again comments were made on how anyone could be a Republican with Trump at the helm, claiming all sorts of ideas about Trump.
But for the author to start out with the “sacking” of DC, is so historically blind and uneducated that it boggles my mind. Rome was sacked, Constantinople was sacked, Kabul was sacked. DC didn’t even scorch the paint.

Quite right. Everyone, go to your search engine and enter "Jan 6 capitol damage" and look at the photos. There are hundreds of them, though many, many repeats. Just look at how little damage was done. No statues toppled; no paintings were pulled off the walls and burned, no fires were set.
There was a broken mirror and a few minor broken windows.
There's also a very good close-up picture of an obviously Antifa guy dressed in Trump gear.
Character and Duty to betray their constituents to the evils of Mobocracy? These heathens would be the first to close the rail car doors on the Deplorables.
And if they form a 3rd party? I’d tell my lefty friends to go with it.
Let’s try the opposite...
