In the 1980s, the board for a game was found scratched onto the second-century stones of a Jerusalem city square, inspiring speculation as to the nature of the game played on it. Many of the ideas proposed have been brutal, reflecting the fact the players were probably soldiers in the occupying Roman Army. However, a new explanation proposes what we are seeing is actually the ancestor of checkers (draughts). The scratchings are located near Hadrian's Gate, built by the Romans to celebrate their crushing of yet another Jewish bid for freedom. In this context, it's understandable some of those looking...

Researchers with Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) found and extracted a mammoth tusk deep under the ocean. According to MBARI, their team spotted the tusk 185 miles offshore and 10,000 feet deep on top of a seamount in 2019. They returned on July 2021 to bring the tusk to the surface. "The researchers have confirmed that the tusk—about one meter (just over three feet) in length—is from a Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi)," reported the institute. They believe it could be the oldest well-preserved mammoth tusk recovered from this area of North America. The Columbian mammoth went extinct around 11,500...

The bill — called Cryptocurrency & Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill 2021 — will also create a “facilitative framework” for the creation of the official digital currency for the country, the legislative agenda adds. Lawmakers in India have for several quarters been discussing risks of cryptocurrency trading and trialing a central government-backed digital currency. An increasingly growing number of Indians, many of whom have never invested in the stock market or any other asset class, have started to trade cryptocurrencies in recent quarters, prompting concerns among some that they might end up losing their money. Local cryptocurrency exchanges have...

The company — one of America's last remaining true dollar stores — said Tuesday it will raise prices from $1 to $1.25 on the majority of its products by the first quarter of 2022. The change is a sign of the pressures low-cost retailers face holding down prices during a period of rising inflation. Selling stuff strictly for $1 hampered Dollar Tree, the company said, and forced it stop selling some "customer favorites." Raising prices will give Dollar Tree more flexibility to reintroduce those items, expand its selection and bring new products and sizes to its stores. Dollar Tree also...

Liberal socialist utopias such as California are a blessing for deadbeat klepto hobos from around the world thanks to the state’s lack of prosecution of shoplifting, but the same policies are becoming a major headache for nationwide retailers such as Best Buy which this morning reported that despite beating on the top and bottom line (revenues of $11.9 billion vs expectations of $11.7BN, EPS of $2.08, beating est of $1.96), its margins missed, echoing the same margin crunch theme that emerged recently with big box retailers such as Walmart. After watching this debacle on TV, I knew full well what was coming later that day. The media would latch on to this and create even more public panic. This is an excerpt from the author’s new book, “A Plague Upon Our House,” which releases December 7 and is available now for preorder.[CDC Director Robert] Redfield’s congressional testimony on September 23 immediately caught my attention. I watched in disbelief as Redfield told Congress that “more than 90 percent of the population”—more than three hundred million people in the US—remains susceptible to the illness. The statement was based on incomplete and outdated data,...

Zeva's one-person eVTOL aircraft: a tail-sitting flying saucer design with some interesting advantagesZeva Aero VIEW 8 IMAGES Zeva is deadly serious about bringing this tail-sitting eVTOL flying saucer to market as a one-person air taxi, and if you can get over the idea of soaring above the city head-first, face-down and Superman-style, it's got some interesting advantages. We've seen a lot of different eVTOL designs over the last five or six years, but the sector keeps managing to find curveballs to throw at us, and we remain fascinated by the creativity this emerging market has inspired. I'll admit to making...

Meet the man who appears to be the first in the post-Soviet Union West to be brought up on criminal charges for publishing long-held Christian beliefs.Juhana Pohjola wouldn’t be cast to play his own part if Hollywood made a movie about a bishop put on trial for his faith. The Finnish pastor has inherited a place in the church of Martin Luther, but it appears none of Luther’s pugnacity or vitriol. In person, Pohjola, 49, is forthright but unassuming, and gentle. Stereotypically, the Finn is thin and tall. He often pauses while speaking to carefully consider his next words. He listens...

Late-night host Stephen Colbert said that since Kyle Rittenhouse was found not guilty of murder charges because he was defending himself from aggressors during the Kenosha riots, self-defense laws must change. "Of course, the big news on Friday was that, after being accused of crossing state lines, killing two people, and wounding another, last year, during a Black Lives Matter protest, Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted on all counts. Okay, cards on the table, I’m not a legal expert, so I can’t tell you whether or not Kyle Rittenhouse broke the law, but I can tell you this: if he didn’t...

Instead of running from terror, the people of Waukesha have stared it in the face with their arms linked — and it's making them stronger.WAUKESHA, Wis. — Guitar For Life Cafe was one of the only unlocked doors on West Main St. in downtown Waukesha on Monday morning, so I stepped inside to buy a cup of coffee. It quickly became clear the shop wasn’t actually open for business. The cafe was dark behind the front counter, with a handful of people scattered among the wooden hightops and stools, nursing paper cups of steaming coffee. It wasn’t immediately apparent when they...

Just weeks after Glenn Youngkin was elected Governor of Virginia, conservatives are already accusing him of stabbing them in the back. His communications staff includes a skirt-wearing LGBT man who lists pronouns in his Twitter biography, and Youngkin’s transition team is led by a former Bush Administration official who is pro-Black Lives Matter. Though Youngkin was elected during a statewide culture war as voters pushed back on the radical left’s LGBT agenda and Critical Race Theory, Joshua Marin-Mora, a member of Glenn Youngkin’s communications staff, appears to be fighting for the opposite side. Marin-Mora lists his preferred pronouns in his...

Milwaukee County, WI – The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office refused to prosecute more than 60 percent of the felony charges police forwarded for prosecution last year. Prosecutors refused to pursue charges in more than 80 percent of misdemeanor filings in December of 2020 alone, Wisconsin Right Now reported. These statistics stemmed from cases that were rejected after being filed, which means the total number of cases Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm’s office refused to file is even higher, according to Wisconsin Right Now. The number of dropped cases, referred to as “no process” cases, was up approximately 10...
