We present an updated time frame for the 30 m thick late Miocene sedimentary Trachilos section from the island of Crete that contains the potentially oldest hominin footprints. The section is characterized by normal magnetic polarity. New and published foraminifera biostratigraphy results suggest an age of the section within the Mediterranean biozone MMi13d, younger than ~ 6.4 Ma. Calcareous nannoplankton data from sediments exposed near Trachilos and belonging to the same sub-basin indicate deposition during calcareous nannofossil biozone CN9bB, between 6.023 and 6.727 Ma. By integrating the magneto- and biostratigraphic data we correlate the Trachilos section with normal polarity Chron...

President Joe Biden's vaccine mandate has been stalled as the Labor Department tries to figure out a way to make it workable. In the meantime, Biden is doing his part by pressuring private companies to force their employees to get COVID-19 vaccines -- no matter what their reason is for hesitancy. "I’ve spoken with Scott Kirby, the CEO of United Airlines, who’s here today. United went from 59 percent of their employees to 99 percent of their employees in less than two months after implementing the requirement. Ninety-nine percent," Biden said at a speech in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, on...

In total, about 40% of voters live in these...

Two Georgia election workers were terminated for allegedly shredding a number of paper voting registration applications over the course of the past two weeks. But instead of fully processing the forms, the employees allegedly shredded some of them. The employees were terminated Friday after being reported by coworkers that same morning. Their actions were reported to the Office of Investigations within the Secretary of State’s Office, and the county's District Attorney. A total of 300...

Far from emerging from the COVID shock awash with fuel, as might be expected after an economic slowdown, the world is entering a new energy crisis the like of which hasn't been seen since the 1970s. European and Asian gas prices are at an all-time high, the oil price is at a three-year high, and the price of coal is soaring on the back of energy shortages across China, India and Germany. The surge in demand is being driven mostly by recovering economies and anticipated extreme weather across Europe and north-east Asia. China is stockpiling domestic coal and gas reserves,...

A large number of unaccompanied immigrant children is arriving in Marin, and local agencies say they are confronting challenges to meet their needs. “Marin’s numbers are very big, especially given that we are the only nonprofit in Marin offering legal services for these unaccompanied children,” said Joana Castro Simonini, managing attorney for San Rafael-based Canal Alliance, which provides legal assistance to the children. “We’re not going to have the capacity to help all of these kids with the current staff we have.” Between Oct. 1, 2020, and the end of August, 223 unaccompanied immigrant children were released to sponsors in...

What is the greatest threat to educating children today? Is it COVID-19, or ignorance? I'm going for number two. There is growing evidence to back me up. In August, Oregon Governor Kate Brown privately signed a bill ending a requirement that high school students prove they are proficient in writing, reading, and math before graduating. The law lasts for three years. The pandemic was blamed for students falling behind, but the real motive was revealed by the governor's spokesman, Charles Boyle, who said existing standards failed students who don't test well and that new standards would aid the state's "Black,...
