Marin faces influx of unaccompanied immigrant children

A large number of unaccompanied immigrant children is arriving in Marin, and local agencies say they are confronting challenges to meet their needs.

“Marin’s numbers are very big, especially given that we are the only nonprofit in Marin offering legal services for these unaccompanied children,” said Joana Castro Simonini, managing attorney for San Rafael-based Canal Alliance, which provides legal assistance to the children. “We’re not going to have the capacity to help all of these kids with the current staff we have.”

Between Oct. 1, 2020, and the end of August, 223 unaccompanied immigrant children were released to sponsors in Marin County. That compares with 231 unaccompanied children who arrived in Marin during fiscal year 2019-20, 106 in fiscal year 2018-19, and 174 in fiscal years 2016-17 and 2015-16.

Perrino said San Rafael City Schools has taken a number of steps to smooth the transition of immigrant minors.

It has added two counselors to support high school newcomer students. A new program designed to create a path to graduation for 16- and 17-year-old newcomer students is underway. A community liaison will be hired to provide additional bilingual support for students in this program.

San Rafael City Schools also has an “elementary newcomer academy,” which is designed to provide specialized and intensive support in the early stages of English language acquisition.

Benjamin said the Novato school district provides a summer school program for newcomers at all grade levels.

Marin county is one the wealthiest counties in the US.

Wonder what the NIMBY crowd will do about this?

Good, the rich Leftists in Marin can now put their liberalism to work.

They are being “sponsored “ by their illegal alien relatives which means nothing as they will become wards of the state

“Wonder what the NIMBY crowd will do about this?”

I wondered the same. Did they all get woke?

Well, San Quentin is located in Marin so it is a short path to future housing for any criminal aliens. Of course in today’s climate anyone who makes a complaint about the illegals being pumped in will probably end up in Q, not the aliens unfortunately (or those who came up with this program to begin with).

This is exactly where illegals and refugees of all stripes should be dumped.

This is what they voted for.

I am sick and tired of destitute refugees from 3rd world toilets being dumped into my conservative community straining the schools, the welfare system and low-income housing. This is being done to turn the area blue, no doubt.

Good. I am all for packing the all into the SF bay area. You bay area liberals want them, you got ‘em. Pack them all into toney Marin. Give them a free condo in the hills with a view of the bay.

I’m sure they all can afford to live in Marin Co.
Why not move them to Tiberon as they deserve the best.

Marin voters are elite left wing fascists!

They love illegals and hate American citizens who work.

Now they can proudly chant: “Let’s Go Brandon!”
