The federal eviction moratorium in place since September is set to expire Saturday, after the Biden administration refused to extend it and Democrats in Congress couldn't muster the votes to intervene.Housing advocates point to renters in Ohio, Texas and parts of the Southeast — where tenant protections are generally low, housing costs are high and economic problems from the pandemic linger — as particularly at risk. Even though it has its own ban in place through August, New York is also a concern, because it has been especially slow at distributing rental assistance funds to the hundreds of thousands of...

After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Fidel Castro introduced communism to the island, which resulted in a wave of Cuban immigrants who were against this regime immigrating to the United States. “That generation suffered a lot because they took away what they had earned through years of work” said Gonzalo Hernández, photographer and family man, who came to the U.S. in his early twenties. His maternal grandfather, the man who introduced solar heaters to Cuba, lost his business to the Cuban revolutionary forces. “One day he came to his factory and it was full of military officers and they asked...

A toxic blaze at the site of Australia's largest Tesla battery project is set to burn throughout the night. A 13-tonne lithium battery was engulfed in flames, which then spread to an adjacent battery bank. More than 150 people from Fire Rescue Victoria and the Country Fire Authority responded to the blaze, which has been contained and will be closely monitored until it burns itself out. "If we try and cool them down it just prolongs the process," the CFA's Assistant Chief Fire Officer Ian Beswicke said. "But we could be here anywhere from 8 to 24 hours while we...

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, issued a clarification statement Friday night after claiming on Fox News’ "Special Report" that the U.S. was "looking into" a possible nationwide vaccine mandate. It was the latest reversal for the health agency, which has drawn criticism for murky communications regarding the coronavirus and policies and recommendations related to the outbreak. "To clarify," Walensky wrote on Twitter, "There will be no nationwide mandate. I was referring to mandates by private institutions and portions of the federal government. There will be no federal mandate."

From the moment I stepped foot on campus at NYU three years ago, I’ve been taught that there is right-think and wrong-think. Everywhere I look, professors, administrators and peers all fervently parrot the same beliefs. I have sat through orientation events that were highly politicized, assuming “community values” of radical progressivism — values I don’t share. On the first day of the semester, a professor blatantly disparaged conservative politicians and their supporters as uneducated and ignorant. Even Mayor de Blasio intervened in October of 2018 to prevent right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos from speaking to a class of about 25 freshmen...

Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos on Friday appointed a retired Supreme Court justice as special counsel to oversee an expanding investigation into the November 2020 elections in that battleground state. Vos said former Justice Michael Gableman would have the resources and authority to conduct a "top-to-bottom investigation" after retired law enforcement officials who were hired part-time said they did not have enough resources to do the job. "Many questions have been raised about the November election that expose weaknesses and faults in our current election system," Voss said. "... To restore full integrity and trust in elections, we have decided...

Pray For the Peace of JerusalemPsalm 120 A song of ascents. 1 I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me. 2 Save me, Lord, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues. 3 What will he do to you, and what more besides, you deceitful tongue? 4 He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom bush. 5 Woe to me that I dwell in Meshek, that I live among the tents of Kedar! 6 Too long have I lived among those who hate peace. 7 I am for peace; but...

Is there anyone who has not voiced an opinion on Simone Biles stepping aside from Olympic competition by now? I'll add to the deluge by saying: Thanks be to God she is where she is. She was once a child in foster care. Her grandparents decided to adopt her, and that made all the difference. May her presence in the news shine a light on all the children in foster care who aren't yet success stories because they do not have the gift of a family to help make all the difference in their lives. Biles writes about that defining...

A Harvard professor of evolutionary biology has been slammed by her department's diversity head for rejecting the term 'pregnant people' and insisting on referring to people as male or female instead. Carole Hooven, who has been at the university for 20 years and received multiple teaching awards, spoke of feeling 'frustrated' at the atmosphere in academia. She told Fox News on Wednesday that she was dismayed at the insistence on politically correct terminology, which she felt was misguided. University professors were discouraged from using the words male and female, and referring to pregnant women, she said. The terms were deemed...

HB 957, the new silencer/gun muffler/suppressor law, will become effective in Texas on 1 September 2021. On that date, the Attorney General, Ken Paxton, will be able to accept written notification by a United States citizen who intends to make a firearms suppressor as per Section 2.052 of the new law. The Attorney General shall then seek a declaratory judgment from a federal district court. There is strong Supreme Court precedent the federal government may not command a state to enforce federal law, known as the anti-commandeering doctrine.HB 957 goes far beyond anti-commandeering. It sets up a test case to...

Does the movie "Taken: come to mind when you think of human trafficking with a well-organized global syndicate of criminals snatching teens from high-class apartments in broad daylight? The reality is that a trafficker is online at this very moment grooming a teen to enter a life of servitude unwittingly. Traffickers do not fit a specific mold; they can be organized groups to sole individuals, from family members to massage parlor owners, not one trafficker is exactly like the other. I have been interviewing those in the trafficking field for several months. There is a shared thread among their view...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States imposed sanctions on the Cuban police force and two of its leaders on Friday in response to the Havana government's crackdown on protesters, and President Joe Biden promised Cuban-American leaders more actions were coming. The U.S. Treasury Department said the sanctions, which appeared to be largely symbolic, were a reaction to "actions to suppress peaceful, pro-democratic protests in Cuba that began on July 11." Targets of the sanctions are two Cuban police force leaders, as well as the Cuban interior ministry's national police force, the department said. "There will be more, unless there's some...

“We, the undersigned, are making this urgent, public appeal to you (President Biden) to reject the cruel policies put into place by the Trump White House that have created so much suffering among the Cuban people.”The entire fascinating document signed by-- among many other historic lovers of freedom and enemies of cruelty, Jane Fonda, Oliver Stone, Danny Glover, BLM, Daniel Ellsberg alongside many apparatchiks of the Castro regime—can be seen here. But many of us who follow this issue note a stark divergence between what the Cuban people have been calling for the past couple of weeks and what their...

**SNIP** Bears is one of thousands of Americans who have been shortchanged by a yawning disconnect between two well-meaning policies lawmakers passed in response to the pandemic. One, a federal ban on some evictions, is set to expire Saturday. Another, a $46.5 billion emergency fund aimed at getting rent to tenants at risk of eviction, has been painfully slow to get off the ground, with some states and counties unable to spend even a dollar of the money they were provided months earlier. The expiration of the federal moratorium, following a last-ditch effort by congressional Democrats to revive it that...

A rare, but not unique, severe cold spell hit the state. It had been so long since a similar cold spell struck in many parts of the state that people who had only been born or moved to the state since the 1980s had never experienced anything like it. The second shock came when vast swaths of the power grid failed. This had never happened before on the scale it did in February. It is not that blackouts never occur in Texas, they do. But not on this scale, and almost never at this time of year. Peak power season...
