On July 17, 1996, TWA Flight 800, a Paris-bound 747 out of JFK, blew up off the coast of Long Island. It seemed somehow fitting that James Kallstrom, the public face of the FBI investigation into the plane's destruction, would die two weeks before the 25th anniversary. As a patriot, a Vietnam vet, and an outspoken critic of all things Clinton, Kallstrom once held promise as the insider most likely to come clean. He never did. As to my own involvement with this story, until the evening of February 23, 2000, I was as naïve as a CNN anchor. Before...

Distract, divide and conquer... that’s been the plan cartels have carried out during the past seven months, according to the DEA. A surge of migrants has allowed them to smuggle more drugs than ever before while federal agents are stretched thin. We traveled to a location where cameras don’t often go, right across from an area called Playa Bagdad that has become more lucrative for the cartels. We are talking about Boca Chica, home of the SpaceX control center. “So why are we here where the Rio Grande meets the Gulf of Mexico? As you can see, you don’t see...

More Republicans than Democrats appear to be "vaccine hesitant" -- that is, reluctant for one reason or another -- to take the COVID-19 vaccine. They've gotten the treatment you might expect in some quarters of the press. "Right-wing anti-vaccine hysteria is increasing. We'll all pay the price," read one headline in The Washington Post. In The New York Times, there was, "Far-Right Extremists Move From 'Stop the Steal' to Stop the Vaccine." The Daily Beast chimed in with "The GOP's Paranoid Streak From John Birchers to Anti-Vaxxers." You get the idea. But it's not hard to imagine a different picture....

With the delta variant of the coronvirus becoming the dominant strain in the US, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer said it's working on a booster shot for its COVID-19 vaccine. The new third shot would target the highly contagious delta mutation, which has spread to 100 countries and is responsible for a growing number of new infections in the US. In a recent press release, Pfizer said a third shot of its vaccine would enhance the immunity of those who've already received the first two vaccine shots. In addition to creating a booster for its existing vaccine, the drugmaker said it would...

Ballots counted in the Arizona Senate's audit of the 2020 election differs from the tally by Maricopa County officials. That's what Senate President Karen Fann said in an interview on Tuesday, in which she also noted the discrepancy prompted the state Legislature to acquire new machines — "not Dominion’s, separate ones" — to recount the ballots. A canvass report released by the county, which includes Phoenix, said 2,089,563 ballots were cast in November's election. Fann said she did not know the size of the discrepancy. "They haven’t released a number yet," Fann told conservative radio host Mike Broomhead on KTAR....

The Images became public after...

The proposals by the European Commission, which is the EU’s executive branch, will cover everything from tougher caps on car pollution to new national limits on gases from buildings. It will see a revamp of the bloc’s emissions trading scheme under which companies pay for the gases they send into the air. The new legislation will involve around a dozen major proposals — most of them building on laws already in place to meet the EU’s old goal of a 40% cut in gas emissions by 2030, compared to 1990 levels — and must be endorsed by the 27 member...

The demonstrations were mainly triggered by people's discontent over Cuba's economic hardships and shortages of basic supplies. These are mainly a result of the US' decades-long sanctions against Cuba. Despite dialogue during the Obama era, the Trump administration tightened sanctions on Cuba, further crippling their economy. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Sunday that the protests were a form of "systemic provocation" by dissidents doing the bidding of the US. He said Washington in recent months had sought to destabilize and weaken the island's economy as part of a policy designed to "provoke a massive social implosion," according to New...

“I’m jealous that you are CCP members. The CCP is really great,” he told the communist leaders who were present, adding, “The CCP’s promises don’t take 100 years, they are fulfilled in decades. I want to become a CCP member.” These remarks follow on the heels of Chan’s performance in “The Epic Journey,” a play that celebrated the founding of the CCP. One scene featured the Hong Kong-born action star singing “Defend the Yellow River,” a Chinese patriotic song about the country’s 1939 war with Japan. ... Chan’s views today are a far cry from those he held when he...

The Chinese Foreign Ministry claimed on Tuesday that the United States was single-handedly responsible for all woes that Cuban people suffer under communism and asserted Beijing “stands ready to work with Cuba,” presumably to suppress the nationwide protests that began this weekend. Cuba is a member of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), an infrastructure debt trap program run by the Communist Party of China, and is one of Beijing’s oldest allies. Both countries are members of the United Nations Human Rights Council and energetically defend themselves in that venue against the overwhelming evidence of human rights atrocities committed by...

Senate Democrats announced Tuesday that they have reached a budget agreement among themselves that envisions spending an enormous $3.5trillion over the coming decade. The plan is far less than the $6trillion that Democrats initially wanted, but it did not have the support of moderate centrists in the caucus. The $3.5trillion plan includes spending for climate change, health care and family-service programs sought by President Joe Biden. Democrats will seek to bypass a Republican filibuster by winning passage through budget reconciliation.

Barefaced lawmakers break Biden COVID-19 regs, risk $1.75 million fineA publicity stunt could cost Texas Democrats up to $1.75 million after lawmakers went maskless on their privately chartered planes to Washington, D.C., violating Biden administration regulations on air travel. More than 50 state legislators chartered private flights on Monday in an attempt to prevent the Republican-led legislature from passing a number of election- and gun-related bills. The group posted a photo aboard an airplane showing that at least 18 participants on one flight shunned masks, a violation that carries fines up to $35,000 per offense and potential criminal penalties, should...

In the wake of a holiday travel week and the growing spread of the Delta variant, local reports are coming in with a bit more frequency of fully vaccinated people testing positive for COVID-19 and even getting sick. Public health officials aren't yet sounding alarm bells or talking about new lockdown orders, but don't be surprised if there's some sort of change with mask guidance in SF's future.
