London (CNN)There is no such thing as a "safe" level of drinking, with increased consumption of alcohol associated with poorer brain health, according to a new study. In an observational study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, researchers from the University of Oxford studied the relationship between the self-reported alcohol intake of some 25,000 people in the UK, and their brain scans. The researchers noted that drinking had an effect on the brain's gray matter -- regions in the brain that make up "important bits where information is processed," according to lead author Anya Topiwala, a senior clinical researcher at Oxford.

Alexandre Dumas recognized the name of Karl Ludwig Sand, who lost his head on this date in 1820 in Mannheim, Germany, for the murder of the dramatist and humorist August von Kotzebue. The assassination of von Kotzebue* worried the Prussian monarchy — then headed by Friederich Wilhelm III — and precipitated a series of proclamations, reforms, and internal struggles that finally led to a full-scale rebellion 30 years later. Sand was a member of a Burschenschaft,** a liberal student fraternity organization which appealed to nationalist Germans seeking a unified German nation-state, and he and others in his group regarded von...

Screening for colorectal cancer—the second most common cause of cancer-related death in the United States—can save lives by detecting both pre-cancerous lesions that can be removed during the screening procedure, and colorectal cancer in its early stages, when it is highly curable. Cancer — Histopathologic image of colonic carcinoid. Credit: Wikipedia/CC BY-SA 3.0 _________________________________________________________________________________________ Screening is most commonly performed with endoscopy: visualization of the entire colon and rectum using a long flexible optical tube (colonoscopy), or of the lower part of the colon and rectum with a shorter flexible tube (sigmoidoscopy). This week, the United States Preventive Services Task Force...

For the past two weeks, rockets have been fired into civilian areas of Israel by the terrorist group Hamas. Hamas' charter openly calls for the destruction of the state of Israel, which would entail an anti-Semitic genocide; its 1988 charter explicitly and openly calls for such a genocide. Hamas spends tens of millions of dollars in foreign aid not on helping the citizens of the Gaza Strip but on building terror tunnels and rocket capacity to strike at the Jews. Hamas fires its rockets from civilian areas, seeking to force Israel to kill Palestinian civilians so Hamas can propagandize about...

VIDEOMorning Joe's Mika Brzezinski remained silent as the reputation of fellow Democrat, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, was ripped to shreds. Although not a word passed her lips, the hilariously pained reactions written all over her face blasted out her displeasure at what she was hearing much louder than any vocal objections she could make.

If you're a politician peddling big new government programs for which there is little need but hefty price tags, you need a clever marketing strategy. At the least, your sales pitch could use a decent soundbite. Such marketing is what the Biden administration with its friends in Congress and the media are doing when insisting that the drop in women's labor force participation during the pandemic requires implementing a policy of federal paid family leave. Don't buy it. First, temporary problems should never be addressed with permanent government expansions. Women have dramatically fallen out of the labor force, and unemployment...

A shirtless attacker bit off the tip of an Asian man’s finger in Hell’s Kitchen Tuesday morning — the latest in a surge of anti-Asian hate crimes in New York City this year. “Go back to your country!” the attacker yelled as he rained punches on the 48-year-old victim on W. 43rd St. and 11th Ave. at about 10 a.m., cops said. The attacker also bit two fingers on the man’s left hand, police sources said. The suspect’s teeth severed part of the victim’s middle finger, cops said. The attacker then ran north on 11th Ave. Cops said he wore...

If you don’t believe that God still speaks today, or, more particularly, if you don’t believe in the continuation of prophetic ministry, this article is probably not for you. But if you do believe that God still speaks and that the gift of prophecy continues until today, this article might be just what you need. Allow me to explain. Spiritual disappointment is a very real thing, often leading to deeper disillusionment and, in some cases, total loss of faith. “This whole thing can’t be real,” some conclude, as all the supports of their faith seem to collapse like a row...

Hired heavies will be knocking on 10,000 doors per day according to British Home Secretary.. The British government has claimed that it intends to send private security contractors to knock on the doors of anyone returning from holidays to make sure they are quarantining upon their return, as required by law. Home Secretary Priti Patel announced Wednesday that those returning from destinations that have not been added to the government’s ‘green list’ should expect to be checked on at their homes. The warning comes after the government lifted international travel restrictions on Monday, allowing people to go on holiday, but...

Iowa GOP Rep. Ashley Hinson is introducing a bill that would prohibit taxpayer money from being used for the travel expenses of Kamala Harris until she visits the southern border. During an interview on Fox News, Hinson said her bill, which is called The See The Crisis Act, would prohibit federal funds from paying for Harris' travel, including using Air Force Two and security details for any travel outside the U.S., until she has visited the border to review the crisis and submitted a report to Congress. "We have an absolute crisis at the border, and Vice President Harris was...

As more than 1,500 Hamas rockets were flying toward Israeli cities with the express purpose of murdering civilians, CNN could spare only around four minutes — in total — to cover the topic during an entire week of prime time. Typically, it’s only when the Jewish state begins defending itself that the story gets any real traction. And, needless to say, the focus got intense after Israel destroyed a twelve-story high-rise building in Gaza that housed foreign press outlets, including the Associated Press. Israel claims that al-Jalaa Tower was home to Hamas military-intelligence assets. It called ahead to warn those...

Supposedly educated liberals laugh at conservatives when we mention the possibility of the United States going full-on commie, you know, like how they laughed at the idea of that handful of wacky Nazis actually seizing power in Germany. It’s more than possible. It’s happening. Even scarier, we are allowing it to happen. Conservatives, known as the “silent majority,” may want to re-think the “silent” part of that equation—and soon. 2020 Was a Dress Rehearsal For Communism Here are five telltale signs communism is a very real possibility for the United States of Amerika, should we allow it to happen: 1....

Sharks in New England The Northwest Atlantic Ocean is home to a variety of marine species, and sharks are no exception. From the large filter-feeding basking shark to the small bottom-dwelling spiny dogfish, sharks of all shapes and sizes can be found inhabiting the waters of New England. Perhaps the most notorious and charismatic of these fishes, however, is the white shark. White sharks are classified as a highly migratory species, traveling large distances in search of optimal foraging and mating opportunities. Their presence in New England is historically documented, and they are most often observed during late spring, summer,...

CASPER, Wyo. — Montana Governor Greg Gianforte signed a bill into law on Tuesday which will allow the sale of recreational marijuana to begin on Jan. 1, 2022 in the state. Montana voters passed an initiative during the 2020 General Election which made it legal for adults to possess up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use starting Jan. 1, 2020, according to Montana Free Press. While that initiative allowed residents to cultivate up to four marijuana plants per household, with Gianforte signing House Bill 701, residents will only be able to cultivate two plants per household.
