NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) - Shortages in the semiconductor industry, which have already slammed automakers and consumer electronics companies, are getting even worse, complicating the global economy's recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. Chip lead times, the gap between ordering a chip and taking delivery, increased to 17 weeks in April, indicating users are getting more desperate to secure supply, according to research by Susquehanna Financial Group. That is the longest wait since the firm began tracking the data in 2017. "All major product categories up considerably," Susquehanna analyst Chris Rolland wrote in a note on Tuesday (May 18), citing power management...

You’re not supposed to notice that every Covid cluster in Singapore is in an indoor space, with people packed together in close confines for prolonged periods of time, while wearing masks. This includes ships, migrant worker dormitories, indoor eateries, and airport terminals. You’re not supposed to notice that less than 1 percent of Covid transmissions occur in outdoor spaces. These include open-air hawker centres reliant on in-person dining, outdoor sports and recreation, and any outdoor gathering that is not crowded. You’re not supposed to notice that 94% of Covid fatalities in America had comorbidities and only 6% died solely because...

But not all of them. FAU researchers traced the monkeys’ genetics and concluded they were brought to Florida from Africa. The monkeys were sold mainly for medical and military research. A group of 36 healthy participants were trained on the device (professional musicians were excluded) and used it to perform a variety of tasks, such as building a tower of blocks, manipulating multiple balls simultaneously, or stirring a coffee cup with a spoon. They even managed to perform some of these tasks while blindfolded or distracted with math problems. “The Third Thumb is a flexible 3D-printed thumb extension for your hand, controlled by your feet,” said Clode, a designer at UCL. “It is worn on the hand, next to your little finger, and dynamically moves like a thumb by using...

This is how confused New Yorkers are about masks. At Barnes & Noble Wednesday, no mask was required to browse the bookshelves, but on the other side of Union Square, the Strand bookstore had mandated masks for all shoppers. Practically everyone inside both stores was wearing a mask, anyway, despite CDC advice that you don’t need one, indoors or outdoors, if you’re vaccinated against COVID-19. Considering that more than half of Manhattan has been fully vaccinated, something is very wrong with the way we are processing risk. The trust between public health experts and the public is broken and now...
