It’s almost beyond belief. How does someone make it through the worst of two wars only to be gunned down on the streets of home for the few bucks in his pocket? It’s been 40 years since the murder of Heren Cabacar, a soldier who survived the Bataan Death March of World War II and the prison camps of the Korean War. Forty years since Portsmouth police knocked on the family’s door at 4 a.m. Forty years since the headlines shouted “Ex-POW killed on walk home.” Forty years of wondering who did it. And trying to make sure the crime...

Groups alleging human-rights abuses against minorities in China are calling for a full-blown boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, a move likely to ratchet up pressure on the International Olympic Committee, athletes, sponsors and sports federations. A coalition representing Uyghurs, Tibetans, residents of Hong Kong and others issued a statement Monday calling for the boycott, eschewing lesser measures that had been floated like "diplomatic boycotts" and further negotiations with the IOC or China. "The time for talking with the IOC is over," Lhadon Tethong of the Tibet Action Institute said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press....

Prince Harry has sparked outrage in the US after describing the First Amendment as 'bonkers'. Harry appeared on Dax Shepard's podcast on Thursday last week, where he appeared to criticize one of America's founding principles; the freedom of speech. The backlash was swift, with many quick to point out that Harry is a guest in his newly adopted country - and is free to return to the UK if he doesn't like it in the US.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Garner, elected the city’s top prosecutor with the help of liberal billionaire George Soros, could lose her law license over charges of professional misconduct in her pursuit of Republican then-Governor Eric Greitens. The Missouri Supreme Court’s Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel found Gardner concealed evidence and lied to courts while handling Greitens case, and concluded: “probable cause exists to believe that Respondent (Gardner) is guilty of professional misconduct.” She now faces a disciplinary hearing that could end with her losing her license to practice law. In 2018 Greitens was accused of taking a nude photograph...

Liz Cheney said on Sunday that the 74 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump for president were 'misled' and 'betrayed.' She also accused House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Elise Stefanik, the woman who replaced her as GOP Conference Chair, of being complicit in Trump's lie that he won the 2020 election. The Wyoming Republican, who voted for Trump in last year's contest, said she regrets that decision and argued the former president is a 'real danger' to democracy with his false claims of election fraud.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates had an 'inappropriate' sexual relationship with a female staff member in 2000, and resigned while an investigation into the relationship was being investigated by the company board. The affair came to light after the Microsoft employee wrote to the board in 2019 detailing the affair - and allegedly asked that Gates' estranged wife Melinda Gates, 56, read the letter. Gates, 65, quit the board suddenly in March 2020 while the investigation was still underway.

We slammed Gov. Andrew Cuomo the other day for his refusal to simply accept the CDC guidelines and greatly loosen New York’s mask mandates, but the sad fact is that he’s hardly alone. California Gov. Gavin Newsom is only talking about lifting his mandate by June 15, when he means the state to reopen. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is keeping his mandate “as we continue to work toward our vaccination goals,” which makes no sense at all: Masks are pointless for those who’ve been jabbed, and the potential freedom to go unmasked is actually a great incentive to get...

The temperatures were cool, the skies overcast with some drizzle. But that didn't stop the Palisades fire from continuing to threaten communities in Topanga Canyon on Sunday. This is fire country. And residents know the dangers. But for many, they consider the summer and fall the dangerous times — when Santa Ana winds combine with hot temperatures. But this weekend was classic May gray. “If you look out any window or if you step outside, all you see is just billowing smoke everywhere,” said Jessica Rogers, president of the Pacific Palisades Residents Assn. As she spoke with a reporter, she...
