On Nov. 18, 1963, in the midst of a whirlwind campaign trip, President John F. Kennedy told Secret Service supervisor Floyd Boring that agents riding on special boards installed near the trunk of his car should drop back and tail him from a follow-up vehicle instead. “It’s excessive, Floyd. And it’s giving the wrong impression to people,” said Kennedy. “We’ve got an election coming up. The whole point is for me to be accessible to the people.” Kennedy’s bristling at the proximity of the agents was not uncommon for those being protected by the Secret Service, especially US presidents. But...

The service member is Marine Corps Maj. Christopher Warnagiris, 40, according to the Justice Department. According to the DOJ, his charges stem from Warnagiris allegedly “violently” entering the Capitol, “pushing through a line of police officers guarding the East Rotunda doors,” and once inside, preventing an officer from shutting the doors and helping others get inside. He is charged with: 1) Assaulting, Resisting, or...

Researchers at Columbia Engineering report that they have built what they say is the world's smallest single-chip system, consuming a total volume of less than 0.1 mm3. The system is as small as a dust mite and visible only under a microscope. In order to achieve this, the team used ultrasound to both power and communicate with the device wirelessly. The study was published online May 7 in Science Advances. “We wanted to see how far we could push the limits on how small a functioning chip we could make,” said the study’s leader Ken Shepard, Lau Family professor of...

By Andrew Bannister*What if there was a cheap drug, so old its patent had expired, so safe that it’s on the WHO’s lists of Essential and Children’s Medicines, and used in mass drug administration rollouts? What if it can be taken at home with the first signs COVID symptoms, given to those in close contact, and significantly reduce COVID disease progression and cases, and far fewer few people would need hospitalisation? The international vaccine rollout under Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) would legally have to be halted. For an EUA to be legal, “there must be no adequate, approved and available alternative...

“So let me say here that, in front of the Chinese side, the United States does not have the qualification to say that it wants to speak to China from a position of strength,” said China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, at the now-famous showdown in Anchorage in the middle of March.Yang’s words, part of a long tirade, were immediately amplified by Chinese state and Communist Party media. His comment was carried for weeks, first by reporting and then by analyses. Foreign commentators picked up the storyline that the...

A disabled Army veteran was attacked in a grocery store parking lot in Louisville on Mother’s Day after a group of four black women called her a “white bitch.” A Kentucky court will now have to decide if the attack was a hate crime — which it very clearly appears to be. The victim, Pamela Ahlstedt-Brown, told WAVE 3 News that she was leaving a Kroger and was parked in a handicapped space near the entrance. When she started to back out of the space, she said she noticed another vehicle behind her, blocking her in. “I get out and...

Schools Are ‘Transforming’ Emotions to Fit a Narrative The education system is taking advantage of students who are unequipped to handle emotions. Why are districts starting to move to social emotional learning? The answer lies in the Texas Education Code, which requires schools to teach positive character traits. While the traits that are required do not fall under the critical race theory or social emotional learning, school districts are using this requirement to justify programs that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion. Concerned parents may look at their child’s assignments and ask teachers and librarians how they are teaching SEL in...

ICBMs and their 400 ever-ready warheads are the most important part of the U.S. nuclear deterrent.. The fate of Western Civilization may hinge on the great debate now raging within Washington’s beltway, virtually unnoted on nightly news and unknown to most Americans, over whether to replace the nation’s 400 obsolete Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) with a new ICBM — or unilaterally eliminate all U.S. ICBMs. ... U.S. bombers are not maintained nuclear-armed or on strip-alert and so would be destroyed in a surprise attack. Surprise attack on just two ports would destroy two-thirds of 14 U.S. SSBNs normally...

TAIPEI—On May 15, representatives of Taiwan warned that Hong Kong’s decision to freeze assets belonging to jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai was a sign to the international community that doing business in the Chinese-controlled city was becoming increasingly risky. The asset freeze, announced one day earlier on May 14, includes all shares in Lai’s company, Next Digital—the first time a listed firm has been target by Beijing’s national security law in the financial hub.Shortly before the announcement, the Taiwan arm of Lai’s popular Apple Daily said it would stop publishing its print version, blaming declining advertising revenue and more difficult business...

[cut] our "pod" -- a small number of family and friends who explicitly agree to a similar level of mitigating behaviors, such as always wearing masks and maintaining physical distance, around those outside the pod. [cut] Like most of us, I yearn for normality. I, too, am tired of limiting my interactions, maintaining distance and wearing a mask. But for my 4-year-old daughter and her generation, I continue to do so when I am around others outside my pod, even among those who are vaccinated. I hope you will too.

A Northwestern University-led team of researchers has signed a cooperative agreement with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop a wireless, fully implantable device that will control the body's circadian clock, halving the time it takes to recover from disrupted sleep/wake cycles. The first phase of the highly interdisciplinary program will focus on developing the implant. The second phase, contingent on the first, will validate the device. If that milestone is met, then researchers will test the device in human trials, as part of the third phase. The full funding corresponds to $33 million over 4 1/2 years.

Cornyn was having “quiet conversations” with Murphy for the purposes of “[finding] common ground,” Politico indicated. On May 16, 2021, the Post observed that Cornyn’s talks with Murphy are ongoing, saying, “Some Republicans, including Cornyn, have said they generally favor background checks and have been actively talking with Murphy about compromise language that would not go as far as...

If you’ve been paying attention to the Biden administration’s and the CDC’s handling of COVID the last week, you’ve probably gotten a bad case of whiplash. The same people who just weeks ago were insisting masks were still needed after vaccination are now patting themselves on the back for reversing course, making clearly false claims that the science has somehow changed in that short period. It hasn’t, but what has changed is the politics surrounding all this.Today, CDC Dir. Rochelle Walensky, in an attempt to bolster her agencies failing credibly, made the Sunday show rounds. While speaking to CNN, she...
