One doctor at the Albert Schweitzer municipal hospital in Rio de Janeiro told the Associated Press that for days health workers diluted sedatives to make their stock last longer. Once it ran out, nurses and doctors had to begin using neuromuscular blockers and tying patients to their beds, the doctor said. “You relax the muscles and do the procedure easily, but we don’t have sedation,” said the doctor, who agreed to discuss the sensitive situation only if not quoted by name. “Some try to talk, resist. They’re conscious.”

Supply chain issues and the popularity of garden centres during lockdown are causing a shortage of garden gnomes. The ornaments are in short supply with raw materials hard to come by and the recent blockage of the Suez Canal contributing to the national shortage. Ian Byrne, assistant manager of Highfield Garden World in Whitminster, said there had been a "massive upswing" in the sales of garden gnomes. "There aren't any [gnomes]. There's definitely a shortage. It's a combined thing with garden centres being so busy, I looked at some figures based on March which said garden centres were 97% busier...

Today I officially became a potential felon. Now I may or may not own an ATI Omni Hybrid with Quad-Rail AR15 pistol and other munitions but that is beside the point. The point is they are coming after us quick, fast and in a hurry. Presently, the power craven political class currently in office seems to desire to suggest that having the right to self-defense as enshrined in the constitution and Bill of Rights is a criminal offense. The way I see it, anyone who tries to restrict my right to legally own firearms under the guise of trying to...

Apostolic nuncio to Mexican bishops: ‘Look reality in the eye’MEXICO CITY (CNS) — The apostolic nuncio to Mexico urged the country’s bishops to “look reality in the eye” as the country’s non-Catholic population increases and Mexicans increasingly identify as nonreligious.Speaking April 12 at the opening of the Mexican bishops’ conference biannual gathering, Archbishop Franco Coppola also told the virtual audience to rethink their pastoral approaches as fewer people participate in parish life and don’t get married in the Church.“The decline in the Catholic population in this land of Guadalupe is extremely worrying,” Archbishop Coppola said. “We’re seeing now with ever...

From, “These People Should Be Required to Get Vaccinated:”We need to sharply reduce coronavirus infections to turn the tide and quell the pandemic. The best hope is to maximize the number of people vaccinated, especially among those who interact with many others and are likely to transmit the virus. How can we increase vaccinations? [snip] The big surprise of the day, however, was the state’s sudden claim that they had discovered “new evidence” that justified re-calling state expert witness Dr. Martin Tobin, pulmonologist, to the witness stand to rebut some of yesterday’s testimony by defense expert Dr. David Fowler, a forensic pathologist. The “new evidence” was purportedly just-discovered data on Floyd’s blood oxygen levels when at the Hennepin County Medical Center. The state wished to have Dr. Tobin testify about that data to rebut suggestions by Dr. Fowler that given the proximity of Floyd’s face to the exhaust of squad car 320, it was...

A total of 2.5 billion Tyrannosaurus rex probably existed during the lifespan of the species, researchers have calculated – suggesting that very few survived as fossils. Charles Marshall at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues used body mass and population density to estimate how many T. rex once lived. Larger animals tend to have a larger individual range, because they need more food to support their body mass than smaller animals, meaning body mass is inversely correlated with population density – a rule known as Damuth’s law. Previous analysis of T. rex fossils shows that the average body...

Even if it requires nuking the filibuster, President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats stand ready to pack the Supreme Court with liberal justices. In a clear partisan effort to pack the U.S. Supreme Court with more liberal justices, congressional Democrats introduced a bill on Thursday seeking to expand the number of justices from nine to 13.The bill was introduced just days after Biden commissioned 36 left-leaning scholars, former judges, and lawyers led by a former Obama adviser to evaluate expanding the number of justices. The White House marketed the so-called “bipartisan” commission as a 180-day effort to examine and outline...

Fox News host Tucker Carlson asked on his program on Wednesday night why Dr. Anthony Fauci believes those who have received the COVID-19 vaccine or have recovered from having the virus must continue to adhere to restrictions. On Tuesday, Tucker Carlson ran a segment questioning why Dr. Fauci and others oppose loosening COVID restrictions, in light of the millions of vaccinations currently occurring. The segment came after the White House coronavirus task force leader called Carlson’s questioning vaccine efficacy “typical, crazy conspiracy theory.”

Israel celebrated its 73rd Independence Day on Thursday, in a nearly coronavirus-free environment as municipalities allowed thousands of vaccinated Israelis to gather for celebrations. The solemnity of the previous day, the annual Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of terror, slipped away in a matter of minutes to fireworks, jubilation and parties throughout the country... Experts have said that Israel, which ran an aggressive vaccination drive, has achieved “a sort of herd immunity” to the coronavirus. More than 5.3 million Israelis — out of a total population of 9.2 million — have received the first dose of the Pfizer...
