Parkin protein (green signal) is in a different part of the cell than the mitochondria (red signal) at time 0 (left image) but then co-localizes with the mitochondria after 60 minutes (right image). Credit: Salk Institute ============================================================= When cells are stressed, chemical alarms go off, setting in motion a flurry of activity that protects the cell's most important players. During the rush, a protein called Parkin hurries to protect the mitochondria, the power stations that generate energy for the cell. Now Salk researchers have discovered a direct link between a master sensor of cell stress and Parkin itself. The same...

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey ----------------------------------------------------------------- MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBMA) — Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced Wednesday she would rescind the statewide mask order -- which has been in place since July 2020 -- and transition her COVID-19 health orders to recommendations citing improving COVID-19 data across Alabama. The announcement means there will be no statewide enforcement of COVID-19 protocols for the first time since the state's response to the pandemic began in the spring of 2020. Ivey's 'Safer Apart' order makes a list of recommendations for businesses, schools and organizations on how to operate safely during the pandemic but now stops...

The trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis officer charged in George Floyd’s death, is continuing Wednesday after the prosecution this week has called a parade of Minneapolis police officials to the stand who have condemned Chauvin’s use of force as excessive. Instead of closing ranks to protect a fellow officer behind the so-called “blue wall of silence,” some of the most experienced members of the Minneapolis force, including Chief Medaria Arradondo himself, have testified against Chauvin. On Tuesday, Sgt. Ker Yang, the Minneapolis police official in charge of crisis-intervention training, and use-of-force instructor Lt. Johnny Mercil became the latest...

An oversight board created to scrutinize research that would enhance highly dangerous pathogens did not review a (National Institutes of Health) grant that funded a lab in Wuhan, China, to genetically modify bat-based coronaviruses.Experts say the NIH grant describes scientists conducting gain-of-function research, a risky area of study that, in this case, made SARS-like viruses even more contagious. Federal funding for gain-of-function research was temporarily suspended in 2014 due to widespread scientific concerns it risked leaking supercharged viruses into the human population.[snip]But the NIH subagency that awarded the grant to the nonprofit group EcoHealth Alliance to study Chinese bat coronaviruses...

Tuesday’s press conference caused many to view the ongoing controversy involving Deshaun Watson differently. Among the many now viewing the situation differently, apparently, is Nike. Via CNBC.com, the sports apparel giant has suspended its endorsement deal with Watson. “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and have suspended Deshaun Watson. We will continue to closely monitor the situation,” Nike said in a statement. The move comes a day after two of Watson’s 22 accusers in civil court have revealed their names. One of them, Ashley Solis, appeared and spoke at Tuesday’s press conference.

The logic from some on the Right seems to be: “let’s not do what the Left does and use government power to protect friends and punish enemies. We’re principled, after all, and on top of that, if we give the government more power to help ourselves now, then when the other side takes over it will be used against us.” But let us be practical and prudent. The only real power in America that the Right has now is political, especially in the states. America’s largest corporations, Big Tech, most of the media, most of the mainline churches, Hollywood, schools,...

The long-awaited first results from the Muon g-2 experiment at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory show fundamental particles called muons behaving in a way that is not predicted by scientists’ best theory, the Standard Model of particle physics. This landmark result, made with unprecedented precision, confirms a discrepancy that has been gnawing at researchers for decades. The strong evidence that muons deviate from the Standard Model calculation might hint at exciting new physics. Muons act as a window into the subatomic world and could be interacting with yet undiscovered particles or forces. “Today is an extraordinary...

Voters in Greenland have given an opposition party its first-ever chance to form a government after a campaign that sought to define the limits of development on the Arctic island. The Inuit Ataqatigiit party won 37% of the vote, compared with 29% for the ruling social-democratic Siumut party, according to official results reported by Reuters. The vote totals should allow Inuit Ataqatigiit to grab 12 seats in the 31-member unicameral legislature, known as the Inatsisartut, meaning it will likely need to form a coalition with support from one of the smaller parties. At the center of Tuesday's election was the...

Sixteen Ohio House Republicans, six of whom have publicly announced their declination to take a COVID-19 vaccine, proposed legislation Tuesday to build legal protections for people who decline vaccinations. Under the bill, governments, schools and private businesses could still impose a vaccine requirement. However, the bill would force them to exempt anyone who submits in writing a claim of medical contraindication, “natural immunity,” or “reasons of conscience, including religious conviction.” After submitting their refusal in writing, people “shall not be required to do anything” more, under the bill. People, businesses, and governments would not be able to “discriminate against, deny...

Di Dongsheng, associate dean of the School of International Studies at Renmin University in Beijing, said recently that China is trying to use pandemic-caused economic shifts to challenge and replace the “dominance” of the US dollar in “global markets and trade,” in a February 4 video posted on Chinese social media. “The currency that fixes the price will eventually be the renminbi (yuan),” stated Di. Last April, Di declared the Covid-19 pandemic an opportunity “unseen in 100 years,” an opportunity to make “all seven billion people in the world pay for [China].” Di, who has “contributed to China’s foreign economic...

Woods’ SUV was traveling between 84 and 87 mph — nearly twice the posted speed limit — when it struck a raised median, Villanueva said. The vehicle was still traveling at about 75 mph as it then careened into a nearby tree in the area of Hawthorne Boulevard and Blackhorse Road. Sheriff’s Capt. James Powers said there was no evidence that the golfer braked throughout the wreck and that it’s believed Woods inadvertently hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.

The final spending package includes $2.1 billion in aid for undocumented immigrants hit hard by the pandemic... Left-leaning lawmakers and activists had been pushing for $3.5 billion to establish a relief fund for undocumented immigrants, who were ineligible for other forms of state or federal aid. Pushback from Republicans and moderate suburban Democrats meant that the final budget allocation was reduced to $2.1 billion. Applicants will have to verify their identity, residency and work history to be eligible for one of the two tiers in the program, which will be administered by the Department of Labor. The higher tier of...
