Marion County kids can come back to school starting Jan. 4, two weeks earlier than originally anticipated. Dr. Virginia Caine, Marion County’s public health director, amended Thursday an earlier public health order that closed schools for in-person instruction after the Thanksgiving holiday. The original order called on schools to remain closed and to deliver instruction remotely until Jan. 18. Caine said that new data and changes in guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prompted the change.

Police in Olympia arrested one person Saturday afternoon following a shooting at a violent protest between two heavily armed groups near the Capital building.
