Vatican Upholds Bishop Over Reception of Communion on Tongue

The secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship wrote to a petitioner last month rejecting their appeal against the Bishop of Knoxville’s decision to ban temporarily reception of Communion on the tongue because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The congregation “received and attentively studied [the] petition making recourse against the decision of Bishop Richard F. Stika to suspend reception of Holy Communion on the tongue at public Masses throughout the Diocese of Knoxville for the duration of the public health emergency caused by the coronavirus pandemic,”

[The CDW in its 11/13 letter to the petitioner] cited a letter sent in August by the congregation’s prefect, Robert Cardinal Sarah, in which the cardinal wrote: “in times of difficulty (e.g. wars, pandemics), Bishops and Episcopal Conferences can give provisional norms which must be obeyed … These measures given by the Bishops and Episcopal Conferences expire when the situation returns to normal.”

Archbishop Roche interpreted this letter as saying the provisional norms can be “even clearly, as in this case, to suspend for whatever time might be required, reception of Holy Communion on the tongue at the public celebration of the Holy Mass.”

“This Dicastery does hereby therefore act to confirm the decision of Bishop Stika and thereby rejects your petition seeking its modification,” Archbishop Roche wrote.

A visiting Mosignor from a local Catholic University is saying the 8am mass again tomorrow morning at my parish. Last time he gently rebuked me regarding my chosen method of reception, based on our Cardinal Archbishop's supposedly temporary "hands only" reception rule. He distributed the Host to me on the tongue nonetheless. I hope he remains amenable to my preference. With this new decision from the Congregation for Divine Worship, I feel I no longer have adequate support in my local archdiocesan parish for my long-respected personal choice in this regard.

Cardinal Sarah: Many Pandemic Communion Proposals are ‘Madness’

Cardinal Sarah, in advocating more reverence of God at Mass, has suggested kneeling to receive Holy Communion on the tongue and for the Mass to be celebrated ad orientem. He said current proposals of distributing Communion “wouldn’t even come to mind” if people were “really aware of what we are celebrating in the Mass and what the Eucharist is.”

Thankfully our priest has no problem with it. I have never received in the hand and hope I never have to.

Nor I.

No one will ever force me to receive in the paws.

Those appear to be self-contradictory statements.

That’s the point. Cardinal Sarah did not sign off on the more recent document even though it came his CDF.

Correction: CDW, not CDF.
