Here is what Jesus says about the ruling class of his day. He said this after he entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, shortly after he overturned the tables of the money-changers: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.” There can be a spirit of ugliness that inhabits a ruling class, let’s call it pharisaical hardness. When that spirit of ugliness rears its head, it deserves confrontation --...

Anyone want to participate in a music play-off bracket-type poll for best songs of the '50s? At the start of this year, as well as 2 and 5 years ago, I ran "tournaments" to pick the best songs of the '60s, '70s and '80s, based on Billboard rankings, so only the best of the best were included! Normally it'd probably be next year before I'd even attempt. But given this stay-home COVID nonsense, I thought maybe everyone would like another something to do. The World Health Organization is currently reeling from President Donald Trump’s decision to halt funding due to the group’s alleged mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic and its repeated deference to China’s Communist leaders who have covered up the extent of the outbreak. On Saturday, the United Nations agency sought to put its troubles out of sight and out of mind as it enlisted Lady Gaga and Beyoncé to lead an all-star virtual concert that helped raise more than $128 million, according to a release from organizers. Of the money raised, $55.1 million will go toward the WHO’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response...

GILPIN COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Gilpin County closed all county roads to non-residents on April 16 in order to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. The public health order was established by the Gilpin County Board of Health in response to the amount of people ignoring the stay-at-home order and traveling to the high country. “With this many people coming to our county, there is a much greater risk of the virus spreading and increasing the rate of transmission of the virus,” Board Chair Gail Watson said. Gilpin County only has one confirmed case as of April 19, but they...

In 1957 Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, backed by a Basie-esque rhythm secion, recorded 10 multi-track vocal versions of famous Count Basie arrangements in an album called "Sing A Song of Basie. They wrote lyrics to all the horn parts, and sing the sh!t out of all these songs, including note-for-note vocals of instrumental solos (also with lyrics). Here are two of my favorites from that album: Down For The Count Little Pony (freakin' awesome note-for-note sax solo lyricized vocal interpretation by John Hendricks) And if you want to hear the whole album, here it is: Sing a Song of Basie

[Catholic Caucus] EWTN’s ‘papal posse’ criticizes Pope’s establishment of yet another female deacon commission Canon lawyer Father Gerald Murray said the new commission shouldn't have been formed since it calls into question the truth that 'women can't be made deacons' April 17, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – On April 8, Pope Francis announced that he established yet another commission for the study of the female diaconate. The responses to this new initiative are coming in, with “progressive” Catholics along with traditionally-minded Catholics both being critical of it. For the progressivists, the members of the commission – some of whom are expressly against...

Storm brewingOklahoma City could see thousands lose their homes in coming months due to record unemployment and economic turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Attorneys and academics told The Oklahoman a moratorium on eviction hearings, once ended, will be followed by a wave of evictions creating a homeless population not seen since the Great Depression. Court records reviewed by The Oklahoman show the number of filings over the past two weeks has slowed — but that trend won't continue after the pandemic, warns Richard Klinge, director of the Pro Bono Eviction Assistance Program at Oklahoma City University. The state’s unemployment...

(CNN) They are best friends and coworkers who normally go to Coachella together every year. But in 2020, the coronavirus pandemic has made their regular sojourn to the desert for the April music festival impossible. So, Charles Lichaa and Lo Noulinthavong decided to throw their own "homecoachella." At Lichaa's West Hollywood, California, apartment last week, the two 30-year-olds sported colorful bandanas as masks, like they would in Coachella where the wind often blows dust around the festival grounds. Then they danced around, rewatching sets of their favorite artists, such as Rüfüs Du Sol and Blackpink. Two weeks ago, Lichaa and...

Piers Morgan said he is horrified by how his “friend” President Trump is handling the coronavirus crisis. The British media personality said Trump has turned his daily briefings on the pandemic into a partisan affair, which Morgan argued shows Trump is more concerned with winning November’s election than saving lives. "I've known him a long time. I consider him to be a friend, but I've been watching these daily briefings with mounting horror, frankly, because this is not what the president should be doing. He won't want me saying this, but I'm gonna say it anyway," Morgan told CNN’s Reliable...

A new NBC News/WSJ poll also shows how the past month has changed Americans’ attitudes about the coronavirus. In March, 53 percent of voters said they’re worried that someone in their immediate family would catch the disease. Now it’s 73 percent. Also in March, a combined 26 percent said the coronavirus has changed their day-to-day life in a “very” or “fairly” major way. Now it’s 77 percent.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Wynn Resorts has not yet announced a date to reopen its properties, but in preparing to do so, the company has unveiled a health and safety plan. In a statement posted on their website, Wynn announced that it has developed a “comprehensive health safety program” detailed in a 20-page summary. “We have worked closely with a team of leading medical and public health professions on a program that is based on the most effective health safety practices available and, just as important, is clear and transparent to our guests.” The health safety program includes daily health...
