Ukraine’s historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery set on fire following major Russian attack By Victoria Butenko

Kyiv — A prominent Ukrainian monastery complex in the heart of Kyiv was set on fire following a massive Russian attack overnight into Monday that killed at least five people and wounded more than two dozen in the capital, according to local authorities.

Images showed flames billowing from the UNESCO-listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, which traces its roots back almost 1,000 years, and firefighters beneath the towers and domes of its Dormition Cathedral battling to control the blaze.

A CNN journalist reported hearing several explosions during the overnight attack, during which Russia launched 611 long-range strike UAVs and 70 missiles, according to Ukraine’s Air Force.

By daybreak, firefighters were still working to douse the flames at the complex. Ukraine’s emergency services said a fire had affected 800 square meters of the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, and released images that showed damage to the building.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Russia is of course claiming it was a patriot missile.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is decimating Russian logistics in the occupied territories. Reports of Russian troups abandoing the Kinburn Pennisula providing an opening for Ukraine to land on the southern bank of the Dniprovs'ka Gulf.

Standing all by itself with no other nearby target. There's no excuse for hitting it.

Apparently, Russia believes that attacking monasteries, schools, and shopping malls is the key to Military Victory

(maybe that's why Russia will never get a Military Victory ...)

This is really tragic - a huge blow for Christian’s history and worship. I have been to this complex in Kiev, probably the most beautiful and historic churches I have seen.

The bombing and burning of the Cathedral is on par with the Muslims torching Notre Dame.

I hope the Ukrainians can be convinced to end this war now as-is, along the terms established by Trump.

Otherwise there will be nothing left of Kiev. Or Ukraine.

This senseless Joe Biden corruption war for Zelinsky baksheesh has gone on long enough.

Russians destroy, it's the one thing Russians are good at.

Churches in Ukraine destroyed by Russian attacks (from left): Cathedral of the Archangel Michael in Mariupol; Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Bobryk village, Kyiv region; St. George's Church in Zavorychy village, Boryspil Diocese, Kyiv region.

500 churches and religious sites destroyed in Ukraine during the war

The Institute for Religious Freedom (IRF Ukraine), a non-governmental human rights organisation founded in 2001 in Kyiv, Ukraine, presented the data on the impact of the war on Ukrainian religious communities during the Summit on International Religious Freedom in Washington, DC on 1 February.

Destruction across all regions of Ukraine

Most churches, mosques, and synagogues were destroyed in the occupied Donetsk (at least 120) and Luhansk (more than 70) regions of Ukraine. The scale of destruction is also high in the Kyiv region (70), where desperate battles were fought in defense of the capital, and in both the Kherson and Kharkiv regions, with more than 50 destroyed religious buildings in each.

Even if the most affected are the eastern regions of the country, damaged religious sites are spread across all of Ukraine, from Kherson in the south to Chernihiv in the north. Russian air strikes on civilian targets, including drone attacks, have affected almost all regions of Ukraine and continue to this day.

The Institute for Religious Freedom also documented many cases of seizure of religious buildings in Ukraine for use as Russian military bases or to conceal the firing positions of Russian troops. “This tactic of the Russian military provokes an increase in the scale of destruction of religious sites in Ukraine,” reports IRF Ukraine.

Targeted attacks on religious figures and believers by the Russian military and intelligence services, primarily in the occupied territories of Ukraine, are also documented by IRF Ukraine. Believers and clergy often became targets for Russian occupation authorities because of the Ukrainian language, belonging to a different denomination, or for any other manifestation of Ukrainian identity.

Putin is the problem, he is unwilling to accept ANY ceasefire or negotiate with Zelensky.

It is Putin, not Zelensky, who is refusing to stop the war along the present lines.

It’s what Russia does - always going after civilian targets since they can’t fight back.

Getting tired of all the lies coming out from both sides. Ukraine is(was) a kleptocracy....old churches, yes, but leaders playing piano with his pecker, and closing Russian associated Christian churches. Russia is an oligarchy, controlled by vestiges of centralized power.
They have land dispute going on centuries. Problems with these two groups not going away for a long time. Expect lots of the physical accomplishments of past history to be wiped out.

The Moscow run branch was shut down in Ukraine because its leader declared a "holy war" against Ukraine calling for its destruction.

Not true. Putin signed a treaty with Ukraine in 2004, recognizing each others border's.

Its not about a land dispute, Putin now is "disputing" Ukraine's right to exist independent from Russia, which he stated in his 5,000 word essay posted on the official Kremlin website in 2021.

Article by Vladimir Putin ”On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians“

President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma exchanged documents for ratifying the Treaty on the Russian-Ukrainian State Border and Treaty on Cooperation in the Use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait April 23, 2004

Or Ukraine could launch a drone attack on that old thing in Red Square with the onion domes

It's made of wood, so it should burn down real good!
