Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Tuesday that President Trump is looking at how to reopen parts of the U.S. economy as the coronavirus pandemic forces an unprecedented shutdown of business throughout the country. "There are parts of the country, like New York, where obviously this is very, very concerning. There are other parts of the country where it’s not." Restaurants, bars, hotels, gyms, beauty salons, entertainment venues and other businesses deemed nonessential have been ordered to close, while 41...

Citizens must be wary of the attempt to redirect legitimate concern about coronavirus into a mandate for sweeping new government powers. Civil liberties are a delicate thing. Yesterday in history, April 6, 1453, the Ottoman Turks began their fateful siege of Constantinople. What prompted it? After all, the Turks and Byzantines had preexisting peace treaties. Did the Turks have a “grievance” against New Rome? No, it was just a good old fashioned jihad, prompted by the same exact logic that had prompted countless jihads before it: convert to Islam, submit as a second-class dhimmi, or die. And the jihadi to lead it was the supreme head of the Ottoman state, Sultan Mehmet, or Muhammad II (r. 1451-1481)—“the mortal enemy of the Christians,” to quote a contemporary...

Just think of that: We can save nearly 2 million lives every year with these personal and collective sacrifices. In addition, we can prevent an estimated 100 million sicknesses and injuries! Those of us who have raised concerns about the tradeoffs of shutting down the nation indefinitely based on speculative models lacking essential data have been told we’re heartless, pro-death, un-Christian sickos who should be ejected from society and banned from all platforms. How dare we worry about things like money, the next generation’s education, the carnage of a destroyed economy, the deliberate wreckage of all non-pandemic medical services, the desolation...

(CNN)The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending that all Americans wear homemade face coverings in public to help stem the spread of coronavirus. But Trevor Logan, an economics professor at Ohio State University, will not be following this guidance. "We have a lot of examples of the presumed criminality of black men in general," Logan, who is black, told CNN. "And then we have the advice to go out in public in something that ... can certainly be read as being criminal or nefarious, particularly when applied to black men."

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro had a heated exchange with CNN anchor John Berman on Monday after Navarro argued that his training in statistical studies as an economist made him qualified to disagree with health experts on the use of the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine to treat the novel coronavirus. "Doctors disagree about things all the time. My qualifications in terms of looking at the science is that I'm a social scientist," Navarro told "New Day" anchor Berman. "I have a Ph.D. And I understand how to read statistical studies, whether it's in medicine, the law, economics or whatever." Toward...

VIDEO If you are drowning and someone tosses you a lifeline, are you really going to worry about whether that lifeline has been fully tested? Of course not. However, that is what many liberals want you to do in regard to using hydroxychloroquine aka Trump Pills. They can't stand the idea that the pills that President Trump has been touting could be the game changer in drastically reducing the number of deaths during the current crises. Therefore they are desperately urging that we must wait for months of testing before using them so as to keep the public from...

Long voting lines are being reported in Wisconsin a day after the state Supreme Court blocked Gov. Tony Evers (D) from canceling in-person voting for the state's primary Tuesday amid the coronavirus pandemic. Every state or territory that was scheduled to hold a primary in April has either moved completely to by-mail ballots or postponed until a later date, except for Wisconsin. Polls are open but are operating at an extremely reduced capacity. In Milwaukee, the state's largest metropolitan area, only five polling places are open – the city usually has 180. The state has so few poll workers that...

As New York City becomes the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States, the city is going into lockdown. Frontline healthcare workers are preparing for shortages of beds and equipment, and the USNS Comfort, a massive hospital ship, has arrived to help deal with the influx of patients. Samaritan's Purse, a Christian humanitarian organization that, among other things, brings medical professionals and supplies to war zones and disaster hotspots around the world, has set up a 68-bed field hospital in Central Park with 60 to 70 medical staff to treat coronavirus patients. The arrival of Samaritan's Purse was...

Diseases such as covid-19 and influenza can be fatal due to an overreaction of the body’s immune system called a cytokine storm....The name ‘cytokine’ is derived from the Greek words for cell (cyto) and movement (kinos). Sometimes the body’s response to infection can go into overdrive. For example, when SARS -CoV-2 – the virus behind the covid-19 pandemic – enters the lungs, it triggers an immune response, attracting immune cells to the region to attack the virus, resulting in localised inflammation. But in some patients, excessive or uncontrolled levels of cytokines are released which then activate more immune cells, resulting...

France on Monday saw its deadliest 24 hours since the coronavirus outbreak began, reporting 833 more deaths as the country’s health minister warned the pandemic has not yet reached its peak. The jump in numbers comes after data from the past several days showed possible signs of improvement. France’s health minister cautioned against predictions that rates of fatalities and infections might start to slow.

The last time a serious economic downturn hit in 2008, Evan Schade was in high school and the crisis seemed like a news event that happened to other people. This time, as the coronavirus has brought the economy to its knees, it has become a personal affair. When nonessential businesses were closed last month in Kansas City, Missouri, where he lives, Schade, 26, lost his job at a carpet store and almost all of the shifts in his second job at a coffee shop. His girlfriend, Kaitlyn Gardner, 23, was laid off from a different coffee shop. The money they...

President Trump found something to briefly celebrate Monday, some bad news for what are emerging as his biggest detractors during the virus crisis: the media. “Advertising in the Failing New York Times is WAY down. Washington Post is not much better,” he tweeted. “I can’t say whether this is because they are Fake News sources of information, to a level that few can understand, or the Virus is just plain beating them up. Fake News is bad for America!” Whatever the merits of Trump’s dissatisfaction with the two papers, it’s clear that advertising has plunged because some companies are shut...

President Donald Trump on April 6 announced the White House has “reached an agreement” with manufacturing giant 3M to bring more than 55.5 million N95 respirators to the United States a month to support healthcare workers. “We have reached an agreement, a very amicable agreement, with 3M for the delivery of an additional 55.5 million high-quality face masks each month, so that we’re going to be getting over the next couple of months 166.5 million masks for our frontline healthcare workers,” Trump said at a CCP virus briefing on Monday. The president said that the “3M saga ends very happily,”...

Former national security adviser John Bolton is joining mounting calls for the director of the World Health Organization to resign, calling him an “accomplice to China’s massive coverup” as the world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic. World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has faced calls for his resignation from American politicians and others who link the group to China’s lack of transparency regarding the severity of COVID-19. “The @WHO is an accomplice to China’s massive coverup of Covid19,” Bolton tweeted late Monday. “That’s why I support efforts by @marcorubio & @tedcruz pushing for resignation of WHO director general.”
