In Anzù, Northern Italy, the hotbed of the coronavirus in Europe, is a basilica where the relics of Saint Victor and Saint Corona are being preserved since the 9th century. Saint Corona was only fifteen when she professed her Christian Faith during the persecution of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius around 165. Corona was arrested and tied by her feet to the tops of two palm trees which were bent to the ground. When the palms were let loose she was torn apart. According to the Roman Martyrology, this happened in Syria. Two investigations in 1943 and 1981, proved that...

If there’s a silver lining to the COVID-19 pandemic — and let’s be real: we could all really use a win right now — it’s that there’s probably never been a better time to ride a bike in the Big Apple. On Sunday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled a new set of guidelines for citizens hoping to help contain the burgeoning outbreak. They included working from home, if possible, avoiding subways during rush hour (a breeding ground for respiratory viruses), and walking or biking to work if possible to avoid crowding on public transportation. At first, it was uncertain...

“How Being Justified Changes Your Life” (Romans 5:1-8) How has this coronavirus thing changed your life? Has it? Maybe it hasn’t. But for lots of people, it has. Let me count the ways. No baseball, that’s the main thing. No hockey either. No March Madness. Universities have shut down. K-12 schools have shut down. No toilet paper to be found on the shelves. Travel plans are being disrupted. The economy is being hurt. The stock market is down big-time. I know for myself I’ve lost about $5,000 on my investments so far this year, almost all of that in the...

The lizard species said to have inspired the iconic movie monster Godzilla frequently finds itself in a brutal battle for dominance. Four giant Komodo dragons standing up to 8 feet tall were recently caught in an epic brawl that ended with a dog pile of exhausted dragons at Komodo National Park on the island of Komodo, Indonesia. Remarkably, none were maimed or killed during the jungle rumble.

Clashing cultures and expert advice lead to discomfort and outright racism >A masked woman waits for the subway in New York in early March. There have been scattered reports of racist attacks targeting Krystal Ji, a China-born lawyer working in San Francisco's busy Financial District, believes that wearing face masks reduces her risk of contracting the new coronavirus. But a seemingly minor incident last week convinced the 26-year-old to ditch them. Ji was waiting for the elevator in her company's lobby, wearing a mask. When the elevator came, a man behind her saw the mask and decided to wait for...

March 15 2020 Third Sunday of Lent Reading 1 Ex 17:3-7 In those days, in their thirst for water, the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “Why did you ever make us leave Egypt? Was it just to have us die here of thirst with our children and our livestock?” So Moses cried out to the LORD, “What shall I do with this people? a little more and they will stone me!” The LORD answered Moses, “Go over there in front of the people, along with some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the...

It may not herald a comeback, but he’ll take it. Bernie Sanders scored a decisive victory in Saturday’s Democratic Party caucuses in the Northern Mariana Islands, a remote US territory in the Pacific Ocean. The Vermont senator snagged four delegates to front-runner Joe Biden’s two. But turnout was tiny — only 134 of the archipelago’s 53,000 residents came out to vote.

A journalist was denied entry into the White House Coronavirus Task Force news briefing Saturday after developing a fever. Reporters had their body temperatures taken by staff at the White House as a precaution against the coronavirus. One person was tested three times by the White House Medical Unit over a 15-minute period, and each time, the result registered above the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guideline of what constitutes a fever, 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Katie Miller, who is a press secretary to Vice President Mike Pence. Fever is one of the symptoms of the coronavirus. NBC...

Telling people to remain calm and simultaneously forcing people to remain in their homes would seem to be a contradiction in messaging; potentially only worsening the panic. However, this is one of those, “well, yes it’s unconstitutional except when….” moments, that may have rather profound consequences. The Democrat mayor of Hoboken New Jersey has announced a mandatory curfew between 10pm and 5am where all residents are not permitted to exit their residence; and all bars must close due to the coronavirus. I don’t know if this is the first ‘mandatory’ coronavirus curfew, or even how such an effort could feasibly...

IF... If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat...

Have you heard this miraculous story about the Castel Sant’Angelo? The Castel Sant’Angelo is a large fortress near Vatican City with a gigantic St. Michael the Archangel statue on top. This statue signifies a magnificent story of God’s love and care for his people through the angels. Around 590 A.D., Rome suffered a terrible plague causing many deaths. Pope St. Gregory the Great plead for the angels’ help to fight this epidemic. The pontiff celebrated Masses and tirelessly processed through Rome with prayers and incense. St. Michael later appeared on top of the castle with his sword. “The plague...

As America confronts the coronavirus (COVID-19), we might ask: Who’s more valuable: first responders or private-equity managers? Which do we need more of right now: doctors and nurses or stock traders and their algorithms? Which is more essential: hospitals or hedge funds? Indeed, in a time of public-health crisis, we might reflect upon some of the pillars of our society and of our social order—that is, the mostly middle-class folks who hold up the health professions. They’re not rich, and they’re not getting rich—and yet they are putting their lives at risk. For us. For America. Quite likely, we’re...

Apparently, a URL was mandatory, so I linked to FR. Has anyone else read this book? I inherited it from my grandfather, who was a cop with an extensive library consisting of all manners of philosophy, religion, myth, and history. I ask because I'm hardly thirty pages in, and I feel like this book was just written. Quotes shared here are cited as well as the can be via a smartphone and clumsy keypads. --- "Dedicated to: Mary Gracious Mother-Heart Of the World's Savior In Prayerful Hope Of The Conversion of Russia" Lastly, a paragraph; the one which made me...
