With hundreds of sex-abuse lawsuits piling up like logs on a campfire, it will soon cost nearly twice as much to become a Boy Scout of America. The once-storied organization sent out a notice to leaders that the registration fee will nearly double from $33 to $60 on Jan. 1, blaming the increase on the rising “cost of insurance.” “Everybody knows what this is really all about,” fumed Charles Greinsky, vice president of the Staten Island Council Boy Scouts of America, who has been involved in scouting since 1963. “This is about the pedophiles and the insurance we have to...

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump handed out commemorative Halloween candy to trick-or-treaters at the White House Monday night. The president and first lady opted not to dress in costume - with POTUS in a navy suit and FLOTUS in a belted coat with an autumn-colored patchwork design - but they seemed delighted by some of their guests' outfit choices. Early on, a child in an inflatable dinosaur suit got a point of approval from the president. Trump patted a little boy, dressed as a mini U.S. Marine, on the cheek. A different Marine came through and saluted Melania...

Posts Posted on October 27, 2019October 27, 2019 On the Longing of Creation To Be Set Free In the first reading for Tuesday of this week, St. Paul speaks of the longing of creation to be set free. He almost personifies creation:For indeed, creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of...

The process could work on the gas at any concentrations, from power plant emissions to open air. A new way of removing carbon dioxide from a stream of air could provide a significant tool in the battle against climate change. The new system can work on the gas at virtually any concentration level, even down to the roughly 400 parts per million currently found in the atmosphere. Most methods of removing carbon dioxide from a stream of gas require higher concentrations, such as those found in the flue emissions from fossil fuel-based power plants. A few variations have been developed...

People who take all of their blood-pressure medication in one go at bedtime are better able to control their condition and have “a significantly lower risk of death or illness” caused by heart or blood vessel problems compared to those who take their anti-hypertensive medication in the morning, according to research published this month in the peer-reviewed European Heart Journal. The trial instructed 19,084 patients to take their pills on waking or at bedtime, and followed them for more than six years — during which time the patients’ ambulatory blood pressure was checked over 48 hours at least once a...

Former Vice President Joe Biden called President Donald Trump an "idiot" for saying Russian interference in US elections is a hoax, the latest barb between the potential 2020 rivals. The comments from the Democratic presidential candidate came during an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" in which journalist Norah O'Donnell mentioned Trump's claim that Russian election interference is a "hoax." "He's an idiot -- in terms of saying that. Everybody knows this. Everybody knows it. Nobody doubts it," Biden said. The US intelligence community determined that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to hurt Hillary Clinton and help Trump. Despite that,...

Acting U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor, who provided key testimony to the Democrats’ controversial impeachment inquiry last week, led an election observation delegation in Ukraine earlier this year for a George Soros-funded organization that at the time boasted Hunter Biden on its small chairman’s council. Two months before he came out of retirement to serve as the highest ranking U.S. official in Ukraine, Taylor led an election observer delegation to Ukraine’s April 21, 2019 second round presidential election for the National Democratic Institute (NDI) organization. The delegation’s mission, according to NDI literature, was to “accurately and impartially assess various...

Just over a month after the Supreme Court effectively punted the partisan fight over gerrymandering to state courts, a North Carolina trial court has rejected state legislative district maps, saying lawmakers took extreme advantage to help elect a maximum number of Republicans. The three-judge panel of state judges unanimously ruled Tuesday that courts can step in to decide when partisan advantage goes so far that it diminishes democracy. The judges gave lawmakers two weeks to try again.

[Catholic Caucus] Pray for a Miracle — An Initial Reaction to the Close of the Synod I, like many of you, feel overwhelmed by the events of the past month in Rome. Many an evening, late into the night, I have come before the Lord in the rectory chapel in lament for the confusion and chaos in the Church, the Lord’s beautiful bride and our mother. Oftentimes too in the fourth watch of the night, between 3 and 4 a.m., I return to the chapel, for with my cares I cannot long rest. Reported from Rome are terrible and seemingly impious...

Pro-life teen Nick Sandmann’s defamation suit against the Washington Post got a new lease on life Monday thanks to US District Judge William Bertelsman partially reversing his prior ruling, which will allow the suit to move forward. Immediately following the January March for Life in Washington, D.C., the press erupted with claims that a video showed boys from the Kentucky religious school harassing Nathan Phillips, a Native American activist, outside the Lincoln Memorial. And, please, sit down. Let’s go have a good time. (Applause.)...
