The seeds of dissent were visible almost immediately. Soccer officials had notified the Timbers Army, a fan organization for the team in Portland, Oregon, on the eve of this season that the anti-fascist symbol its members had been waving on a giant banner in the north end of the stadium would no longer be permitted at games. The fan group was not happy, releasing a lengthy critique of Major League Soccer's new rules, and working with team officials for months in meetings to change the rule. But what began as an internal dispute between the league, the Timbers front office,...

A map posted by HowMuch.net breaks down the economic toll of illegal immigrants state by state, and their findings are extremely troubling. Using information gathered from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, How Much’s map shows how much money illegal immigrants cost American taxpayers on a state-by-state basis. States closer to the Mexican border are most affected, but several states throughout the country still pay billions to support illegal immigrants through education, welfare, law enforcement, and medical care. Here’s the breakdown, provided by...

Former White House strategist Stephen Bannon said in a new interview that he doubts any of the announced 2020 Democratic primary candidates could stand up to President Trump. In an interview with AM 970's The Answer in New York, Bannon told host John Catsimatidis that Democrats' failure to address foreign policy on the debate stage, particularly concerning China, would be their downfall. “The key to the Democrats right now … is that they really don’t talk about foreign affairs or national security. It’s like they’re running for student council president. Eventually they’re going to have to wake up to the...

Johnson had vowed to leave the EU by Oct. 31 — with or without a deal. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Johnson will abide by the Brexit referendum passed in 2016 by forging ahead. “I do also think that on...

Readers of Watts Up With That will know from Mark I that for six years I have been trying to publish a manuscript with the post title. Well, it has passed peer review and is now published at Frontiers in Earth Science: Atmospheric Science. The paper demonstrates that climate models have no predictive value. ------------ From the perspective of physical science, it is very reasonable to conclude that any effect of COâ‚‚ emissions is beyond present resolution, and even reasonable to suppose that any possible effect may be so small as to be undetectable within natural variation. Nothing among the...

So much production in industries like steel is based on demand for more production, but should that demand falter, the whole system could come crashing down... Consider crude steel production, a test-tube example of how command economies get it wrong. In the mainland this stood in June (2017) at an all time monthly record of 73 million tonnes, five times the total production in all of Europe. Why is so much steel needed? ...to build more steel mills ...to build more shipyards, ...so that more ships can be built to carry more iron ore, ...to build more shipyards... What we...

The United States hopes to get back to denuclearisation talks with North Korea in the coming days or weeks, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday. "We know Chairman Kim has continued to make the commitment to denuclearise. We are hopeful that in the coming days or perhaps weeks we'll be back at the negotiating table with them. That's the best outcome," Pompeo said in an interview with ABC's "This Week." Negotiations aimed at dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and missile programmes have stalled since the collapse of a second summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader...

A prominent liberal author has compared the red “Make America Great Again” hats to Nazi swastikas, and told “normal people” — that is, people who don’t support Trump — to stop wearing any kind of red hat, lest they start “making people scared.” Rebecca Makkai, who has been a finalist for both a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, made the controversial comments on Twitter, according to Fox News. To be clear, Makkai really was talking about all red hats. In fact, she even specifically asked fans of sports teams that wear red hats — such as the Cincinnati Reds...
