The Ebola outbreak is “out of control” in parts of West Africa, says the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Could climate change hasten the spread of the deadly virus? Perhaps, but the linkages are complicated, according to limited scientific literature on the topic. Ebola is a disease caused by the Ebola virus. Scientists don’t currently know how the disease originates, nor how to cure it. They know the virus is transmitted via contact with an infected animal. It appears that in most cases, Ebola outbreaks begin when humans eat infected bush meat — wild animals like...

Could Sarah Palin revive her political career through an ultra-conservative third party? If one former California State assemblyman has his way, yes. In an op-ed published on conservative Christian site Barbwire, activist Steve Baldwin says the GOP establishment just isn't cutting it. And he thinks Sarah Palin is his woman to change that. "We don’t want the GOP to pursue a 'socialism-lite' agenda. We want them to go on the warpath and do whatever it takes to stop the destruction of our constitutional Republic," Baldwin wrote. "It has become increasingly clear that the GOP leadership will do everything in its...

HOUSTON — Natural gas production in the Marcellus Region exceeded 15 billion cubic feet per day in July, the most productive period ever recorded there, according to a government analysis. The Marcellus Region, located largely in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, now accounts for almost 40 percent of U.S. shale gas production. The field’s rapid growth has had a major effect on the surrounding markets for gas and isn’t expected to ebb soon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The Marcellus Region’s natural gas productivity has surged since 2010, when production totaled 2 billion cubic feet per day. New wells...

An Italian politician has suggested migrants who reach the Mediterranean country from northern Africa should be put under quarantine over the risk of Ebola contagion. Fabio Rolfi, a councillor with the xenophobic, anti-immigration Northern League party, urged health authorities in Milan's Lombardy region to apply the preventive measure to the thousands of migrants who travel to the industrialised north of Italy after arriving in the south via boat. The suggestion sparked widespread criticism and was labelled as "racist" and "useless" by other councillors. Alessandro Alfieri, the regional secretary for the centre-left Democratic Party said the proposal was "a scaremongering proclaim...

Mark Udall, criticizing his Republican opponent's pro-life stance, features a mother holding her young daughter and saying the child is the reason abortion should remain legal. As a female narrator criticizes Republican Congressman Cory Gardner’s "history [of] supporting harsh anti-abortion laws,” the camera cuts to a dark-haired woman holding a girl, who appears to be less than 10 years old, on her lap. “I want my daughter to have the same choices I do,” she says. The narrator also references “Gardner's eight year crusade that would ban birth control.” “Seriously?” a woman says....

The baby at the center of 2012’s shocking forced abortion case in Nevada has been legally adopted by her grandparents, who fought to save her life after a county judge considered ordering their mentally handicapped daughter to have an abortion. Cierramaria Cecilia Bauer, now 15 months old, was conceived when her mother, Elisa Bauer, wandered away from an assisted living facility for mentally handicapped adults and was impregnated by an unknown sexual predator. Elisa has the mental capacity of a third grader, and when workers at the facility discovered she was pregnant, they called social services, which led to a...

Bacon lovers are getting socked in the piggy bank. City butchers and restaurateurs are beginning to squeal for mercy after the price of bacon rose to the highest it’s been in nearly 30 years — thanks to high demand and a shortage of healthy pigs. “We’ve had to raise the prices in small increments in the last month,” said Vincent Santiago, an employee at Staubitz meat market in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. The pork surge began last year when a virus swept through US farms in about 30 states and killed millions of pigs. Bacon prices have shot up around 10...

The U.S. Civil Rights Commissioner claims campus speech codes need to be tightened as college students are still “developing” and cannot yet handle certain information. Speaking during a U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR) briefing on sexual harassment law in education, Democrat Michael Yaki likened restricting free speech on college campuses to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2005 decision to ban the death penalty for minors. During the briefing, Yaki said hostile environments on college campuses can occur from fraternities holding “slave auction[s]” or celebrating Latino culture by “making everyone dress as janitors and mop floors.” “Certain factors in how the...
