White House spokesman Bill Burton said the White House strategy of elevating House Minority Leader John Boehner in recent days appears to be working. Burton told reporters on Air Force One that the assaults from White House officials on Boehner have been successful in getting across Obama’s defense of ending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. “What’s important here is the underlying fight, which is that the president and congressional Democrats are for extending tax cuts for families who make less than $250,000 a year,” he said. “So to the extent that we’ve had a vigorous debate about...

Is the Administration in charge, or are the United Steelworkers? For an object lesson in the importance of pro-trade rhetoric, look no further than the latest quandary in which President Obama finds himself. He has talked up his enforcement-centric trade policy for two years while members of his party in Congress have bashed China at will. Now Mr. Obama faces a union request for more trade enforcement against China at an inconvenient moment in Sino-U.S. relations. Last week the United Steelworkers filed a petition with the U.S. Trade Representative alleging that Beijing unfairly subsidizes and protects its green-tech industries to...

Good question, huh? I've wondered about this for awhile. Cordoba House changed its name to Park 51 which is odd since the address of the location is 45 47 Park Place. Look to the Koran-the book of islamic conquest Qur'an CHAPTER 51, Verses 45-47 explains all: 51:45 And they were unable to arise, nor could they defend themselves. 51:46 And [We destroyed] the people of Noah before; indeed, they were a people defiantly disobedient. 51:47 And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander. The numbered Qur'an verses celebrating the Muslim conquests match up to the...

We have discussed before some concerns about the New American Bible (NAB) and how it vaguely translates the Greek word ποÏνείᾳ (porneia) which specifically refers to sexual immorality, but which the NAB translates only as “immorality.†Of course immorality could mean just about anything. You can read more of this rather serious problem here: NAB and PorneiaIn this post I’d like to explore another problem with the NAB that was also called to my attention by one of you. There are problematic footnotes which do not always reflect Catholic teaching. One I’d like to look at is a flawed footnote...

Evanston police are investigating an early morning explosion that left one man dead Tuesday and led to the evacuation of residents and the closure of a middle school. Police secured the area around the Nichols Middle School and Fitzsimmons Park, where the decapitated body of an unidentified male and an explosive device were found shortly before 6 a.m. At Tuesday afternoon news conference, Evanston Police Commander Tom Guenther said authorities were taking the explosion “extremely seriously’’ but did not yet understand what the bomber’s intentions were. Police refused to identify the man who died and said they had not determined...

British boy gets US ban for calling Obama a ‘prick’ Luke Angel sent ‘abusive and threatening’ email after watching 9/11 show By Rachel Helyer Donaldson LAST UPDATED 4:23 PM, SEPTEMBER 14, 2010 A British boy has been banned from America for life after he sent an email to the White House calling Barack Obama "a prick". Seventeen-year-old Luke Angel, from Silsoe in Bedfordshire, sent the expletive-laden message to the White House after watching a TV programme about the 9/11 attacks. Unfortunately for Angel, the FBI intercepted the email and contacted police in the UK. No criminal action will be taken...

Republicans are poised to take control of the House in November and with a little luck may well pick up the Senate too. The last time this situation occurred was November 1994 when Newt Gingrich and the Republicans picked up 54 seats and took the House for the first time in 40 years. They also picked up 8 seats in the Senate, enough to take back that body as well. As a result of that shift, Bill Clinton was forced to pivot to the center, abandon some of his more liberal designs, and as a consequence he won a second...

Delaware must remember The Battle of Trenton! It seems so incomprehensible that such an important battle in American history could so easily be forgotten—a battle that left an indelible mark on Delaware, New Jersey and the American Revolution. It is time to remember the Battle of Trenton, Delaware, and reclaim that lost liberty. After suffering a defeat in the Battle of Long Island, General George Washington had 4,707 troops fit for duty. The end of the year was approaching. More enlistments would run out, reducing the size of Washington’s army to less than 1,500 men. Washington had been in retreat,...

Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk is Chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations. Recently he gave an address to the Annual Nicean Club Dinner at Lambeth Palace in which he politely but firmly pointed out that the dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Anglicans, "is doomed to closure if the unrestrained liberalization of Christian values continues in many communities of the Anglican world."He referred particularly to the impact on this dialogue of the proposed ordination of women Bishops: We have studied the preparatory documents for the decision on female episcopate and were struck by the conviction...

Third-party gubernatorial candidate Tom Tancredo will keep his spot on this fall's ballot. Denver District Court Judge William Hood issued the ruling Tuesday in a lawsuit brought by two Republicans challenging Tancredo's inclusion in the race. The former Republican congressman is running as the American Constitution Party's gubernatorial candidate. The lawsuit claimed Tancredo violated state law when he got the American Constitution Party's nomination because he was not registered with them for at least 12 months. Tancredo told the judge Monday that his party's bylaws trumped state law when he got his last-minute nomination in July.

..."It is painfully clear that excessive spending by government, coupled with the looming threat of a $3.8 trillion tax hike on January 1 that will raise taxes on 56% of all business income -- including on the vast majority of the small businesses that are the engines of job creation -- will further discourage private-sector job creation. If both parties are serious in the pledges we have made to focus on jobs, it is critical that legislators on both sides of the aisle come together and use what time remains in this Congress to enact legislation that removes these harmful...

Killer shrimp are invading UK waters and raising concern among scientists. Killer shrimp may threaten the balance of life in fresh-water ecosystems. On Sept. 9, Britain's Environment Agency issued an alert that "killer shrimp" were spotted in a fresh-water reservoir in Cambridgeshire, England. Before you have a 28 Days Later moment, take a deep breath. These tiny crustaceans, the Dikerogammarus villosus shrimp, which can grow up to 3 centimeters (about 1 inch) in length, pose no direct danger to humans. But the killer shrimp is bigger than local species – and more aggressive. The "killer shrimp" eats other shrimp and small...

Harry Reid is from Nevada, so he’s familiar with gambling. Still, the Senate majority leader is taking a heck of a risk by asking his fellow Democrats to vote on an immigration bill so close to an election. Specifically, Reid said today he may attach the Dream Act to the defense reauthorization bill. What’s the Dream Act? It is legislation to offer a citizenship to illegal immigrants

From the WSJ: The growing tendency here to question U.S. drug policy has nothing whatsoever to do with ideology or an affinity for drugs. Rather, it is an acknowledgment that while the "war on drugs" has done nothing to curb the U.S. appetite for mind-altering substances, its unintended consequence has been to empower organized crime networks. These gangs, which aggressively target children as customers and low-level employees on both sides of the border, are undermining the economy and the quality of life in the binational El Paso-Juárez metropolitan region. Right. Just like Prohibition did nothing to curb the people's desire...
