Were Jews living in Islamic societies victims of antisemitism? If so, to what extent? How did conditions for Jews in the Moslem East compare with those in Christian Europe? Is Islam intrinsically antisemitic? Are today's Moslems more antisemitic than those of the past and if so, why? These questions have been the subject of vigorous discussion over the past few decades. Andrew Bostom's new book, The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts to Solemn History, brings massive evidence to show that Jews suffered greatly in Moslem societies due to an antisemitism intrinsic to the Moslem religion. In this he...

In an earlier post, we wrote a bit about the differences between modern politics and the approach taken by our pre-agricultural ancestors. When thinking about these issues (modern vs. pre-ag), it's important to understand that while our experience of the modern is (obviously) more immediate, the experience of those who lived in that long dawn before agriculture was far more lasting, and thus is more likely to find reflection in our deepest patterns of thought and feeling. If we agree that our species, modern Homo sapiens came into being around 200,000 years ago, and the earliest evidence of agriculture is...

So there’s this guy named the Dude, and some dudes break into his apartment and pee on his rug, so the Dude, an LA burnout whose real name is Jeffrey Lebowski, goes to find the other Jeffrey Lebowski, a rich guy the intruder dudes were actually looking for, so he can get him to replace the soiled rug, which totally tied the room together. That’s the basic premise of “The Big Lebowski,’’ the Coen Brothers’ 1998 stoner caper, which also involves bowling, nihilism, a kidnapping, and many, many White Russians - a cocktail whose parts combine more cogently than the...

Columnist Ken Blackwell wrote an Op-Ed in the Washington Examiner demonstrating even someone as enlightened as Charles Krauthammer can make mistakes. Governor Palin’s “Death Panels” are very real, they sadly exists for our Veterans and are a necessity in every government run health care system around the globe. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was ordered out of the room by leading conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer, who is a medical doctor -- a rarity in the world of pundits. Krauthammer said Palin's comments about "death panels" in Obamacare were not helpful in a serious debate on the government takeover of health care....

Artist Michael Murphy has chosen an unlikely medium for his portrait of Fox's Glenn Beck: manure. The painting, according to Murphy's site, is composed of "bull shit and pigment" on canvas. (Indeed, there are photos of the artist blending his materials). Perhaps Beck, who has recently engaged in a bit of art criticism, will weigh in on Murphy's unusual creation.

Hi Bill, I just got through weatching my last 35 seconds of your show... ever. I have been a huge fan for years, and I am going to keep my promise to myself, and never watch you again. I also predict that you will soon begin seeing your ratings slip, inexorably, and for good. I came in just in time to hear you refer to the 1 million plus Tea Party attendees as "...the 75 thousand or so..." (disgusting insult #1). You then went on to race-bait your guest, suggesting that the predominantly white make-up of the DC crowd was...

Like clockwork, it’s September and the ACLU is at it again attacking the Pledge of Allegiance in schools! Extending the idea that the students don’t have to say the Pledge in some states, they want those children to be informed by their teachers and administrators that they don’t have to say the Pledge – what some are calling a “Miranda warning” to remain silent during the Pledge, inferring that the Pledge is something wrong or potentially criminal. Here’s my take: I think students without conscientious objection must say the Pledge or at least stand and be quiet. The Pledge is...

The Drive (vanity) The tide has turned, just like the 1986 American conference championship game when Johm Elway faced a 20-13 deficit against the Cleveland Browns with 98 yards and 5:32 minutes to play, it is time to execute the drive for freedom and liberty.

Flames and smoke spew from beneath a passenger jet as it hurtles along a runway after making a dramatic belly landing. The aircraft was forced to crashland after part of its undercarriage failed to drop into position. The 78 passengers and crew emerged largely unhurt, although one flight attendant was taken to hospital for observation and five passengers were treated for shock. Enlarge Flames and smoke are seen coming from the rear of a Fokker 100 airplane as it makes an emergency landing on the tarmac of Stuttgart's airport. The Fokker 100 had left Tegel airport in Berlin yesterday morning....

Senate Negotiators Narrow Health Care Differences THE ASSOCIATED PRESS September 14, 2009 WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate health care negotiators said Monday they've narrowed their differences on a host of difficult issues with just a day or so left to seal an elusive bipartisan deal that could change the course of the contentious debate. After months of closed-door negotiations, Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus said, ''We're getting very close.'' But it remained unclear if the Montana Democrat could strike a bargain that would mark a turning point for President Barack Obama's top domestic priority. The negotiators pared the cost of their...

House Democratic leaders will move ahead with a "resolution of disapproval" against Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) on Tuesday afternoon, following through on their threat to sanction the conservative lawmaker for heckling President Obama during his speech to Congress last week. Democratic leaders will formally introduce the resolution Tuesday afternoon, according to House insiders, and the vast majority of Democrats - as well as some Republicans - are expected to vote for it. No decision had been made at press time as to which Democrat would be offering the resolution. A number of Democrats, led by Majority Whip James Clyburn (S.C.)...

North Carolina's vintage art pottery shops usually had a glaze referred to as "Brown Sugar." These rustic-looking glazes were popular with tourists and were in demand by the candle-making operations which purchased large numbers of small wares. The most distinctive "Brown Sugar" glaze - - one that is widely associated with North Carolina pottery - - is the lead-rutile matte glaze in shades of tan and brown . . . . {Many pictures)

Commando troops in Somalia on Sunday killed a Kenyan believed to be involved in a 2002 hotel bombing in Mombasa that claimed the lives of 15 people, including three Israelis, according to multiple accounts from Somalia. Nabhan, who was also wanted over a botched missile attack on an Israeli airliner taking off from Kenya's Mombasa airport, was killed after a missile struck his car in Somalia's Barawe District, 250 kilometers south of the capital Mogadishu. Witnesses said the missile was launched from a helicopter. ABC News reported the...

Capt. Connie Rhodes, who claimed her superiors had prevented her from attending her previous, emergency court hearing, finally stood before a judge today to question the constitutional eligibility of her commander in chief. ... But when Judge Clay Land – the same judge who earlier dismissed a similar case filed by Maj. Stefan Frederick Cook – ordered Rhodes to appear and testify before him in an emergency hearing last week, Rhodes didn't show. She claims she had requested leave, but her superiors denied it, meaning she would be considered AWOL – and therefore subject to court martial and imprisonment...
