Obama tries to build momentum for health overhaulObama will push for new and crucial protections for people who already have insurance JENNIFER LOVEN AP White House Correspondent WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will tell the nation in a prime-time address precisely how he wants to expand health care, pitching a fresh argument — but, to liberal disappointment, no demand — for a government-run insurance option. "The president's going to speak clearly and directly to the American people about what's in this bill for them," press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday, hours before Obama appeared before a rare joint session of...

Elizabeth Liebert is modest about her low-key fame since becoming the first Roman Catholic sister to serve as a dean of a Presbyterian seminary. "It's a very pedestrian appointment, sorry to say," said Liebert, one day after greeting new students during a reception at the San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo. Liebert, who replaced Jana Childers in the role on June 30, will serve a three-year term as the only dean at the graduate school in San Anselmo as well as vice president for academic affairs. She will be officially installed as dean Oct. 4 in a private dinner...

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - A decision by the University of Wyoming to name a new center for international students for former Vice President Dick Cheney is drawing criticism from people who say Cheney's support for the Iraq war and harsh interrogation techniques should disqualify him from the distinction. The former vice president and wife Lynne are expected to attend Thursday's dedication of the new Cheney International Center on the Laramie campus. Protesters plan to be there, too. The center is funded in part with $3.2 million the Cheneys donated to the university in several installments while he was vice president. The...

I’ve always suspected this. There can be only one logical conclusion to the anthropogenic global warming campaign: eliminate human beings. Or, at least, reduce to a minimum their number on the planet. Have you had the sneaking suspicion that climate change activists were seeking to suppress every possible life-enhancing human activity from a long hot bath to a long-haul flight to an exotic destination? Have you ever had the sense that they would actually prefer it if you just ceased to occupy space on the earth, using up - as you do - its precious resources to facilitate your own...

Dan Ferris: The No. 1 reason gold is above $1,000 Advertisement Tuesday, September 08, 2009 By Dan Ferris in Extreme Value: Something I haven't seen in the press much is that, the more fixing the government does, the worse the ultimate result will be. The size of the bailout so far is absolutely unprecedented in all of history. Last November, ace researcher James Bianco did some math and found bailout spending at that time was equal to the inflation-adjusted cost of the Marshall Plan, Louisiana Purchase, Race to the Moon, S&L Crisis, Korean War, New Deal, Iraq invasion, Vietnam, and...

Featured Term (selected at random):BODMER CODEX A manuscript in Greek of St. John's Gospel, written in Egypt before A.D. 200, consisting of 154 pages. It is almost perfectly preserved for the first fourteen chapters of John, with the other chapters in fragmentary state. Together with the Beatty papyri, the Bodmer Codex confirms the existing text of the New Testament beyond anything comparable in any other subject or field of similar antiquity. It is the oldest, extensive manuscript of a portion of the New Testament. Published in 1956, it is named after its original owner, M. Bodmer, of Geneva, Switzerland. All...

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) on Wednesday called for President Obama's "czars," or appointed high-level advisers, to testify before Congress about their "authority and responsibilities" in the executive branch. The president's "czars" have become a point of controversy among his opponents because they do not have to be confirmed by the Senate as cabinet-level officials do.

British diplomats in Khartoum have demanded that the vehicles, computers, office equipment, medical stores and cash be returned so that it can be redistributed. But Sudanese officials have scoffed at this, saying that neither the British government nor the aid agencies have "the right to control these assets". In total, Oxfam and Medecins Sans Frontieres' French and Dutch operations have reported that they lost roughly £3.25 million of equipment. They had also been forced to pay another £5.6 million to Sudanese staff as lay-off payments because of the shutdown. Sudan has demanded the right to redistribute the materials to its...

(English-language translation) Speculation about the sale of Russian weapons to Venezuela has surfaced as Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez is scheduled to arrive at Moscow. Chávez will stay in Russia until today, as part of his tour of Libya, Syria, Algeria, Iran, and Belarus which was interrupted by his surprise presence at the Venice Film Festival to attend the screening of a documentary filmmaker Oliver Stone dedicated to him. Venezuelan media and international news agencies today based themselves on information from the Russian Interfax agency to feed speculation about the arms sale. “Venezuela is currently negotiating new arms contracts which will...

An Associated Press-GfK poll says that public disapproval of President Barack Obama's handling of health care has jumped to 52 percent. The same survey shows that 49 percent now disapprove of his overall performance as president. In July, just 42 percent disapproved of how he was handling his job. The grade people give Obama on health care has also worsened since July, when just 43 percent disapproved of his work on the issue. The poll was released hours before a nationally televised speech before Congress in which the president plans to make a renewed case for overhauling the nation's health...

Like many young British Muslims, I was 'radicalised' at college. Just as the three British-born men who were found guilty this week of plotting to blow flights out of the sky were recruited at school, I encountered extreme Muslims at the age of 16 and was slowly converted to their ranks. At my East London college, the Islamic society was run by the extremist group Hizb ut Tahrir, which believes in setting up an Islamic state, destroying Israel, and denounces Western values. At first, I, too, was convinced by their rhetoric. However one awful violent moment changed me for ever....

Here is video of Sen. Charles Grassley responding to President Obama's challenge to Republicans to come up with alternatives to Health Care Reform. Grassley said those comments sound "very partisan," coming from someone who has claimed to be a "post-partisan" President. Grassley also slammed CNN and other mainstream media for not covering the four Republican plans that have been been put forward, saying, I guess you haven't covered them because "we are in the minority and you want to help the President so much." Grassley hammers CNN at the 4:20 mark of the video. CNN's John Roberts responded that "I...

O.C. lawmaker allegedly caught discussing his trysts with lobbyists September 9, 2009 Capitol Blackberries are buzzing after KCAL-TV Los Angeles late Tuesday night aired a videotape of what its reporter said was an Orange County GOP lawmaker talking to a colleague at a committee hearing in explicit detail about recent trysts. In the KCAL report, Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee Vice Chairman Michael Duvall (R-Yorba Linda) appears not to realize that his microphone is on during a lull in a July committee hearing and talks about his conquest of two women. Reporter Dave Lopez then reports that Duvall says on...

for He [God] himself has said I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!] So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently and boldly say, The Lord is my Helper; I will not be seized with alarm [I will not fear or dread or be terrified]. What can man do to me? (Hebrews 13:5,6)

Once in a while, Gentle Wind, one of our super-secret Wishes who works closely with some folks in the White House, well, he sends us an update on some of the deeper "inside" initiatives, maneuverings, etc. that are going on there. All of this is highly "off the record". Here's what he managed to fire off at about 1am this morning regarding Euthanasia and where he sees it in the next 4-20 years... "I am against euthanasia, but not because I think it is wrong, because in truth there is no such thing as ‘wrong’ without a metaphysical origin for...

Since Aug. 28th in Sacramento, CA, I have been traveling across America performing on the Tea Party Express tour. Patriots are attending by the thousands, families, grandparents and kids. Everyone extremely enthusiastic, grateful and concerned for their country. The liberal media is calling them extremists, racists, ignorant and an angry mob. I am the only black performer on the team and the affection from the attendees has been overwhelming. Black conservative authors Selena and William Owens are traveling with us as speakers. Kenneth Gladney, the black conservative beaten by SEIU thugs is touring with us also telling his story. The...

Barack Obama's school speech has come and gone. The content of the speech is irrelevant at this juncture, as he has had ample time to revise the content after the barrage of criticism received by parents concerning this speech--there is no legitimate way to know the original content, or if it differs from the final version.
