A law crafted with NRA input creates a '2nd amendment weekend holiday' giving shoppers a tax break on firearms and ammunition the first weekend in September. One gun-control advocate calls it absurd. An observance of that name is underway this weekend in Louisiana, thanks to a law signed by Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal in July. It decrees that each year, on the first Friday through Sunday in September, shoppers in the Bayou State shall be exempt from paying state or local taxes on firearms, ammunition or hunting supplies. The law was sponsored by state Sen. Robert Marionneaux Jr., who said...

Over at today's Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington calls for school choice! She comes at it from a far different starting place than I would, but her conclusion is not half bad. In a single-payer health care plan, the federal government provides coverage for all U.S. citizens and legal residents. Patients don't go to a government doctor -- they just have the government pay the bill. And that's how it would work with education. In a single-payer education plan, the federal government, in conjunction with the states, would provide an education allotment for every parent of a K-12 child. Parents would...

The fate of health care reform may top the political worries of Democrats at the moment, but the economy could prove the issue that really hurts the party in the 2010 midterm elections. And there's not necessarily a whole lot they can do about it. The monthly figures showed the unemployment rate jumping to 9.7 percent in August, up from 9.4 percent in July, and economists widely believe that unemployment will continue to climb to the psychologically significant 10 percent threshold and possibly beyond. That means month after month of government jobs reports that will give Republicans a ready-made news...

CONCORD, N.H. — Sixty-five-years ago, 1st Lt. Bernerd Harding huddled in a cellar with a few other airmen captured by German farmers and buried his pilot’s wings, fearful he’d be beaten or shot as an American bomber pilot. Now, at age 90, Harding wants his wings back. He’s headed to Germany on Sunday and hopes — with the help of a German doctor — to find the farm house cellar and dig up the 3-inch long metal wings that he had proudly pinned to his shirt. The house was in rural Klein Quenstedt (pronounced klyn KWEN’-shted), Germany, southwest of Berlin,...

It is imperative and crucial that the ‘Czar Act of 2009’ be passed. It is imperative that Congress does not do a half-assed job of vetting Obama’s radical appointees. It is crucial that we follow the Constitution. It is obvious that Americans have to direct Congress to do the right thing for this country. Remember, we elect them and our hard earned tax dollars pay their salaries. Regardless of what some of the members of Congress believe, they DO, in fact work for us, not the other way around. Americans have an obligation to themselves, their children and their grandchildren...

White House officials offered tepid support Friday for Van Jones, the administration's embattled energy efficiency guru, who has issued two public apologies this week, one for signing a petition that questioned whether Bush administration officials "may indeed have deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, perhaps as a pretext for war." Earlier, Jones said he was "clearly inappropriate" in using a crude term to describe Republicans in a speech he gave before joining the administration. ****SNIP **** Senator Christopher S. Bond (R-Mo.) urged Congress to investigate Jones's "fitness" for the position, writing in an open letter, "Can the American people trust a...

Dear Leaders, We appreciate your coordination of communicating the District's press release about the President's address on September 8. We ask that you communicate with your staff on the following instructional matters as well. If teachers choose to show the video in class as part of their curriculm at a later date, they must: 1. be able to tie the video to TEKS for their subject area; 2. notify parents in advance that the speech will be shown and provide information about follow-up assignments or activities; and 3. provide an opportunity for parents/students to "opt-out" if they do not wish...

Bill Cosby spoke about his feelings regarding black people and education in his recent rant called We Cannot Blame the White People Any Longer. Cosby is probably the only person who could get away with talking the way he does because he is well respected among people of all races. “People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education, and now we've got these knuckleheads walking around,” he says. “They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk….You can't be a doctor with that kind...

Surprised he didn’t call the kids cracka’s. Race baiter as well as liar suits this man. Earth to White House, your boy “it guy” is a problem! Van on suburban white kids: “You’ve never seen a Columbine done by a black child. Never. They always say, ‘We can’t believe it happened here. We can’t believe it’s these suburban white kids.’ It’s only them. Now, a black kid might shoot another black kid. He’s not going to shoot up the whole school.” Exit question: It’s okay to shoot one black kid Van? HA: Try to imagine, say, Mike Huckabee expounding on...

Phillip Garrido a "good singer," played bass Phillip Garrido, Jaycee Lee Dugard's alleged kidnapper, is also a musician, a longtime acquaintance says. But nothing about his song stylings will change the disturbing image of the man who is charged with kidnapping the South Lake Tahoe girl 18 years ago, raping her, and fathering two children with her. (Garrido had pled not guilty to 29 felony counts.) Marc Lister, a former glass-shop owner in Concord, Calif., says Garrido gave him two CDs of music filled with disturbing lyrics some years ago, Henry Lee reports in the San Francisco Chronicle. And Garrido's...

As a young black growing up during the Great Depression in La Grange, Texas, Vernon Hopson spent many days working in the fields and watching as airplanes buzzed the crops. He told himself that one day he was going to fly. He read an newspaper article about the Tuskegee Airmen, then got a word of encouragement from his high school principal, who had been kicked out of flight training school just two months before his graduation because he was black. He told Hopson to pursue his dream. That was all Hopson needed to spur him to enlist in the Army...

My Opinion, The green czar has been working with the prisons, telling the Muslim population they have Union jobs when they get out in the Solar Panel industry. The Administration knows they would have a difficult time getting our Armed Forces to go against us. But the recently released prison population would have no problem going door to door confiscating our weapons. (Beware) This will very soon, so take what ever action you need to take to protect your homes. Remember what happened in Rowanda, there they stole, looted, raped and killed and took whatever they wanted. I sure hope I'm...

His plan for a televised address to be shown in classrooms when children return to school next week provoked sparked complaints from parents and fuelled the growing conservative backlash against his leadership. Critics alleged that the address planned for Tuesday was another example of state interference and so-called "big government" by the Democrat president following his record financial stimulus spending and plans for health care reforms. Officials across the country fielded irate calls from parents after it was revealed that the federal education department had encouraged schools to make children watch the 15-minute address. Districts in states including Texas, Minnesota,...

Anti-cop mission drawn up by Black Panther group Van Jones, President Obama's controversial environmental adviser, signed a petition calling for nationwide "resistance" against police, accusing them of using the 9/11 attacks to carry out policies of torture. The petition was organized by the October 22nd Coalition, an anti-police organization whose mission statement was drawn up by leaders of the radical Black Panther Collective for Social Progress. The movement organizes yearly national anti-police demonstrations, accusing police of "brutality, detentions, domestic spying, profiling and other attacks on human and civil liberties." The protests are held under the banner of the National Day...

With each new revelation in the Van Jones saga -- more footage was found today in which he referred to then-President George W. Bush as being like a crackhead over his comfort with oil as an energy source -- it appears that his belief system isn't really anything out of the ordinary for a White House and a President who, at heart, come across as a "do as I say, or else" bunch of closet totalitarians. Really, we can see it in almost every piece of legislation -- passed or sitting and awaiting passage -- put forth by the Obama...
