So she was skeptical when representatives from two of the nation's largest unions began competing for her attention over the last few weeks with unannounced visits to her home, mailings and phone messages promising to fatten her state stipend.

Avowed Communist and Barack Obama Administration "Green Jobs Czar" Van Jones late yesterday released via the White House press office a statement apologizing for offending anyone with any of a series of inflammatory and indeed ridiculous things he has said in the (very recent) past. The latest bit of Jones inanity news was in fact not something he said, but rather something on to which he signed. That would be an October 26, 2004 "Truth Statement" that asserts amongst other things that President George W. Bush had a hand in the September 11th terrorist attacks. Making Jones a 9-11 "Truther"...

Yesterday afternoon I sat through the town hall meeting of Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. (D-NJ/8) on the campus of Monclair State University. As town hall’s go, this one was pretty good based upon my attendance at a number around the state of New Jersey. Plenty of noise from both sides and a handful of people ejected. Questions were required to be submitted in writing and separated into pro/con groups on the healthcare issue. To his credit, he alternated back and forth between the two positions so the Q&A was not skewed in either direction. More importantly, once a questioner was...

A spiritual journey that began seven years ago ended in the sanctuary of a Catonsville convent Sept. 3 when 10 Episcopal nuns and their priest chaplain were received into full communion with the Catholic Church. In administering the sacrament of confirmation, Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien traced a cross on the foreheads of each candidate as he anointed them with sacred chrism oil and called on them to be sealed with the Holy Spirit. The sisters then renewed their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience as some 120 worshipers looked on.

Van Jones: "We forget sometimes that the people who poured out their blood on the ground in this country, to turn an apartheid regime into a struggling, fledgling democracy, the so-called civil rights workers, when they went to face the dogs, when they went to face the fire hoses, when they sat shivering in cold jail cells soaked in blood, when they faced lynch mobs, when they found their children shot down in the street, they didn't march at laundromats , they didn't march at high school gymnasiums."

Now, I've said that there are only two things (other than the public option) that liberals will accept in a healthcare bill. First, a "back door" leading to the public option. Like this "trigger." And second, the libs will embrace any legislation with the potential to make the existing healthcare system worse, thus leading to more urgent calls for the public option. The left will not allow healthcare to be fixed; they want it nationalized. Liberals are holding the system hostage, and the only acceptable ransom is universal healthcare. You can't fix what we have -- they don't want it...

China 'covers suicide bridge in butter' Government officials in south-east China have ordered workers to cover a 1,000 ft long steel bridge in butter to prevent citizens from using it to attempt suicide. All the climbable surfaces on the structure in Guangzhou have been covered in greasy fat to put an end to the spate of people threatening to jump from it, The Sun reports. Government spokesman Shiu Liang said: "We tried employing guards at both ends but that didn't work - and we put up special fences and notices asking people not to commit suicide here. "None of it...

I've heard 3 or 4 versions being floated around, but was wondering if anyone has received advance copy of exactly what will be said, not that he won't make changes and decide to slide something in (that would have been run past focus groups, etc.) The county I live in is leaving the decision on whether or not to show it up to the teacher. IF the teacher decides to show it, they will send a letter home indicating such and the students will be allowed to opt out with no penalty. Has anyone any specific info on this?

When 33-stone Viking enthusiast Tim Barnacle got too heavy for his longboat he knew it was time to take action. Now Tim, 47, has shed almost 10 stone since February 2008 so he can take to the water on his replica Nordic boat without fear of it capsizing. He bought the 20ft boat – named Ratatosk after a Norse red squirrel – in 2000 but as his weight crept up, Tim's passion became more difficult to enjoy. "I was falling asleep at my desk and was diagnosed with sleep apnoea which is quite common in big fat blokes."

For many people (and yes I’m jumping to conclusions and making sweeping generalizations here) “No one should die because they can’t afford health care” is the weasel way of saying “I want someone else to pay for it” without sounding like a panhandler. So, take what follows with a grain of salt, OK?
