President Obama’s “green jobs czar” Van Jones has been targeted again and again by conservatives for his controversial views and now they’ll have another item to use as fodder. Mr. Jones signed a statement for 911Truth.org in 2004 demanding an investigation to what the Bush Administration may have done that “deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen perhaps as a pretext for war.” His name is listed with 99 other prominent signatories supporting such an investigation on the 911Truth.org website, including Code Pink co-founders Medea Benjamin and Jodi Evans, comedienne Janeane Garofalo, Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney of Georgia and others. He's identified...

A Missouri woman was tricked into wiring about $4,000 to someone in England after receiving faked messages from a friend on Facebook asking for help, police said Wednesday. Jayne Scherrman of Cape Girardeau wired the money through Western Union after receiving what she believed were several requests for help from her friend, Sgt. Jason Selzer said. Police were notified about the scam on Aug. 26, Selzer said. They believe someone took over the Facebook account of a Cape Girardeau County resident, Grace Parry, changed the password so she couldn't access it and sent out messages saying she and her husband...

The officials said the State Department would make the announcement on Thursday as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton meets with Zelaya in Washington. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

A Foley physician said what appears to be the first case of HIV/AIDS cure in the world is getting little mention in the media. Dr. Awadhesh K. Gupta, medical director at Foley Walk-In Med Care, said he first heard of the medical breakthrough in April when he attended the Annual Conference of the American College of Physicians in Internal Medicine in Philadelphia. It’s a conference Gupta tries to attend every year. “This is the most prestigious organization of physicians in Internal Medicine and is responsible for certifying post graduate training in Internal Medicine. It is also one of the oldest,”...

The wonderful thing here is that it's not just a story of glazed-eyed government incompetence breaking at the same time that the Obama administration is trying to nationalize 15% of the US economy. It's that the incompetence has its source in interest groups who issue diktats according to whatever the prevailing liberal pseudo-sophistication happens to be. 30 years ago it was preservation, then we decided that nature should always be allowed to take its course, then we decided we had to plant trees everywhere to enrich the atmosphere - opps! - and now we've got some kind of non-interventionist hodgepodge....

School districts across Wisconsin are deciding whether students will watch a nationwide address directed at them from President Barack Obama. The speech on the importance of education has raised concerns among some parents who view it as nothing more than political advertising within public schools. Officials with both the Green Bay and Madison school districts say they've heard from a handful of parents with questions about whether the video will be shown next week. A spokesman for Republican state Rep. Steve Nass from Whitewater says their office has also fielded calls from concerned parents. Madison schools is working on guidelines...

September 03, 2009, 4:00 a.m. An Exaggerated DeathIn proclaiming the death of conservatism, Sam Tanenhaus misses several marks. By Peter Berkowitz In contrast to progressives, who converge in believing that the top priority of politics should be more equitable government distribution of opportunities and goods, conservatives differ, sometimes sharply, about the aims of politics. While almost all conservatives in America affirm the centrality of individual freedom, social conservatives concentrate on protecting religion and morality, economic conservatives on limiting government’s scope and size in accordance with free-market tenets, and neoconservatives on preserving the principles of sound government embodied in the...

This is a video of Nabeel Qureshi and David Wood asking questions at Arabfest, Dearborn. While we responded to them, festival security started assaulting us, as you will see in this video. The conclusion of this video is a mob of festival security attacking our cameras, pushing us back, kicking our legs, and lying to the police. We ask you, is it a coincidence that the city with the highest percentage of Muslims in the United States is the city where Christianity is not allowed to be represented (let alone preached) on a public sidewalk? Is it coincidence that in...

Hi! Please pardon the personal thread, but I cannot think of whom else to turn to for this. Sometime in the mid to late 1990s, there was a critique of the post-Conciliar government of the Church published. I recall this things: first, it was originally in Italian and was translated into English; secondly, it had several authors who wrote under a collective pseudonymn which identified them as clergy at the Vatican (or possibly of the archdiocese of Rome rather than the Vatican per se); thirdly, it was reviewed extensively in the Wanderer; fourthly, it had a dust jacket illustration depicting...

SCOTTISH men buy larger condoms than their counterparts south of the border. Supermarket giant Tesco today reported that more of its extra-large condoms had been bought in Glasgow than anywhere else in the UK. The new condoms – 10mm longer and 1mm wider than the standard version – went on sale at Tesco earlier this month. And the retailer's sales map of its new condom – the first to be sold in the UK – showed most were sold in Glasgow. Edinburgh saw the seventh-highest sale figures in the UK, beating Sandhurst, Hatfield and Chester in a top 10 league....

The controversy about carrying guns in public is not new. In 1967, however, the political alignments on this issue were completely different. Many conservatives (and others) objected when the Black Panthers insisted on exercising this right. In response, Governor Ronald Reagan signed the Mulford Act banning the carrying of guns in public. Many defenders of liberty have felt the need to reflexively defend gun-toting citizens at these rallies. This is a mistake, or at least an incomplete response. A far more productive contribution to an otherwise debate is to emphasize privatization as a solution. We can only find a...

Another View: Lock the Law School Doors September 2, 2009, 10:00 am Dan Slater, a former litigator, argues that there are too many places at too many law schools, especially with the current hiring slump at law firms. This summer, in the staid world of legal education, where curriculum is uniform and scholars are trained in the art of like-mindedness, one dean hatched a contrary plan. In a memo to incoming students, Patricia D. White, the dean of University of Miami School of Law, surmised: “Perhaps many of you are looking to law school as a safe harbor in which...

If the networks don’t carry it, they ought to be ashamed of themselves,” said Democratic strategist Paul Begala. “It’s not like they’re going to be bumping ‘Masterpiece Theater.’ What are they going to run, bikini models eating worms in some kind of contest?” Actually, such a reality show premise could score better ratings than Obama when he’s talking about health care. This will be the third time since June that Obama has pushed the administration’s health care reform plan to the American people during prime-time, and the ratings indicate that audience interest is dropping.

Perpetual bear Peter Schiff contemplates a move into politics. Peter Schiff is offended. “Nobody has ever contacted me from any of the congressmen to say, ‘Hey, you saw this financial collapse coming, you nailed it exactly,’” he says, adding impatiently, “I pretty much got it exact.” If nobody from Washington wants to call him, Schiff figures, he will call Washington. “I don’t seem to be able to make a difference as a private citizen. No one there seems to care what I say,” he complains. He plans to make them care by challenging Sen. Chris Dodd in 2010. “People say...

If a presidential election were held last night on the campus of Loyola University New Orleans, the winner would not have been the 48 year old occupant of the White House, but a spry 74 year old physician from Texas. U..S. Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) enthralled a huge crowd of supporters and students with a one hour address on topics ranging from the war in Afghanistan to the Federal Reserve. The crowd was so large that the university set up five overflow rooms to accommodate the intense interest in Dr. Paul’s message. It was amazing to see such an enthusiastic...
