A congressman from the Philadelphia suburbs will challenge U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter in the Democratic Senate primary. In an interview with The Wayne Independent Wednesday morning, U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, D-Pa.,confirmed his intention to run against Specter, a long-time Republican who switched to the Democratic party earlier this year. “I am going to get into the race against Arlen Specter ... for senator,” said Sestak in his first media interview as part of a three-week tour through all of the Commonwealth’s 67 counties. Wayne County was his first stop where he met with local Democrats prior to his interview with...

Are you ready for a FReepathon? This is going to be a great quarter for us! First a nationwide Independence Day Tea Party, then we'll be caravanning across country on the Tea Party Express culminating at the 9-12 March on Washington and National Tea Party in DC, then the First Annual Free Republic National Convention! It's time we stand up and loudly say NO to the Marxist B. Hussein Obama before he completely destroys our country and replaces freedom with socialism! The guy thinks he's a dictator and he's running amok without even seeking the approval of the congress or...

A powerful new film, The Stoning of Soraya M., is calling public attention to the Islamic practice of stoning adulterers in a way that only Hollywood can; while at least eight women await death by stoning in Iran today, none of their cases have drawn any significant protests from human rights organizations, and Western governments have remained largely indifferent. With a genocidally inclined nuclear Iran looming on the international stage, the victimization of women by Islamic laws prescribing stoning for adultery and other sexual crimes may seem to be the least of our worries. The Stoning of Soraya M., however,...

The long-range rocket North Korea launched in April could be converted into a ballistic missile that can theoretically hit half the United States with a substantial payload, two U.S. physicists have concluded from their joint study. North Korea launched on April 5 what it claims was a rocket designed to carry a satellite into orbit. The U.S. and its allies say nothing entered orbit, calling the "Unha-2" rocket a disguised form of a ballistic missile capable of flying over 6,700 kilometers.

A great cartoon from fifty years ago showing what we give up in exchange for our freedom. Putting this in the "history repeating itself" bin, the final line rings true moreso now than perhaps ever before. Enjoy!

The still-mysterious circumstances of Michael Jackson’s death, with its attendant implications of celebrity-besotted, sycophantic enablers turning a collective blind eye to prescription drug abuse and other self-destructive behavior, put me in mind of an incident in my police career from some years ago. I briefly worked on Los Angeles’ prosperous Westside, and I was called to a home just a stone’s throw from the one now so familiar to anyone who’s been near a television set in the past week. A home every bit as large and lavishly appointed as the one Jackson was renting at the time of his...

"Winds of Paradise 4: Observation 1" SNIPPET: "Al-Qaida really outdid itself with Winds of Paradise 4. Two things up front. On the one hand, this video confirms that we’ve killed a lot of their young guns. That’s undeniably awesome. On the other hand, they have a much deeper bench than I had suspected. And I’m talking about guys out there doing it jihadi-style, not sitting in their mom’s basements. This is undeniably not awesome. This video, in fact this whole series, is dissertation worthy (hint hint all grad students out there looking for a good topic). There’s so much material here,...

Last week’s Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Louisville, Ky., offered a glimpse into the future — the not-so-distant future. The aging leadership of the SBC, including the Executive Committee and the various entity heads, are acknowledging that their days until retirement are numbered. Some statistics suggest they perhaps should be concerned about leaving the convention in worse shape than they found it. For the most part, these are the same leaders that came onto the scene after self-described conservatives swept aside an old guard of denominational leaders in the years following 1979. They signed inerrancy statements testifying to their...

The inconvenient truth is that the new cap-and-trade bill is based on lies. A tsunami of economic discontent is coming. ___ The U.S. economy is disintegrating, hundreds of thousands of people are losing their jobs every month, and record-high home foreclosures are sweeping the nation. But apparently that is not enough for out-of-touch politicians in Washington. Now they want to hit Americans with what the Wall Street Journal is calling possibly the “biggest tax in American history.” If they were deliberately trying to destroy America’s economy, politicians and the green lobby could have hardly found a better way. On Friday,...

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama, under fire from the gay-rights community over slow action on its priorities, promised to deliver by the time he leaves office. [Barack Obama] Barack Obama The president gave no new details about how he would advance these issues, but he made passionate remarks saluting the pioneers of the gay-rights movement and expressed solidarity with those working for equal rights. "Welcome to your White House," the president said at a reception Monday to mark the 40th anniversary of the birth of the modern gay-rights movement. His remarks were greeted warmly by a cheering crowd of some...

In this clip from the Glenn Beck Comedy Hour, former CIA agent (and complete wacko) Michael Scheuer says the only thing that can save America from illegal immigration is for “Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States.” Good grief. Beck, of course, nods and agrees with this warped analysis, and says, “Which is why I was thinking this weekend, if I were him that would be the last thing I would do right now.”

A Niwot woman accused of stabbing two men in the back early Tuesday morning was engaged in a "sexual encounter" with both of them before they started fighting. According to a Boulder County sheriff's news release, Ruffin Griffin and Clint Cadigan, both 28, left a Niwot bar together and went to the house where Griffin lives with Serena M. Brooks and their 6-month-old son. "Upon arriving at the residence, the three adults engaged in a sexual encounter and a physical altercation ensued," . The men "fell to the floor" during the fight and that's when, sheriff's officials allege, Brooks used...

CBS' Chip Reid and Helen Thomas double teamed Robert Gibbs today at the daily press briefing on the "tightly controlled" town hall meeting President Obama will hold on health care. Gibbs kept saying lets have this discussion AFTER the meeting. Helen Thomas accused the White House of "controlling the press." She said almost all White House/Obama events are "prepackaged." She accused the White House of not "having any answers."

People we live in a different America you need to read the stitches on a fastball at all times. There are several reasons why the Senate has come out saying they have no where near the amount of votes to pass the cap and trade bill. They never would have passed it through the House if they didn't intend to jam it through the Senate. One of the reasons why they and media are saying there are not enough votes is to temper the outrage of the millions that made calls last week to their congressman and women. But more importantly...

President Obama has one distinguishing feature. He is a man of rigid self-discipline. Politicians are a lot like actors: they tend to be vain; and, more often than the rest of us, they are presented with the temptations to which the vain are prone. Many--one thinks of Bill Clinton, John Edwards, John Ensign, and Mark Sanford--succumb. If, however, in his personal life as an adult, Barack Obama has strayed from the straight and narrow, we have heard nary a word. It is, in fact, a sign of his astonishing self-discipline that we know next to nothing about his life apart...
