:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Critical Threats: Blank When None
Pentagon Makes Fighting Extremism Top Priority

Seven years after the Sept. 11 attacks, the Pentagon on Thursday officially named "the long war" against global extremism as its top priority and pledged to avert any conventional military threat from China or Russia through dialogue.

The Defense Department, in a new national defense strategy, also emphasized the need to subordinate military operations to "soft power" initiatives to undermine Islamist militancy by promoting economic, political and social development in vulnerable corners of the world.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he hoped the change would help establish permanent institutional support for counterinsurgency skills acquired in Iraq and Afghanistan within a defense community heavily skewed in favor of expensive conventional and strategic modernization programs. Read More

Thanks, Cindy. I’m trying to follow events. I wonder how this will affect Russia’s plans to host the Winter Olympics in Sochi which is on the Black Sea.

I’d like to hope it could affect Russia economically by the USA and other like-minded countries not going to the Olympics in Russia; but then I saw that we went to the Olympics in China in spite of the Christian persecution and human rights violations.

OPINION:

I think this is a good exercise, and I hope other states are
drilling and preparing, too.

I’ve heard of no specific threat against NY, lately except for the
target areas found on the papers Sidiqqui had when she was arrested.
Apparently, NY was a targeted area.

President Bush Discusses Situation in Georgia

Presidential Remarks

In Focus: National Security
In Focus: Global Diplomacy
8:13 A.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. I’ve just received an update from my national security team on the situation in Georgia. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in Tbilisi. She’s conferring with President Saakashvili and expressing America’s wholehearted support for Georgia’s democracy.

She will be traveling to Crawford, where I will meet her and she will bring me up to date on what she has seen and what she heard in Georgia, as well as in Paris — I mean, in France. She did not go to Paris. Secretary of Defense Gates will keep me briefed on the humanitarian assistance to the people of Georgia. We’re working closely with our partners in Europe and other members of the G7 to bring a resolution to this crisis.

The United States and our allies stand with the people of Georgia and their democratically elected government. Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected. Moscow must honor its commitment to withdraw its invading forces from all Georgian territory.

Some Americans listening today may wonder why events taking place in a small country halfway around the world matter to the United States. In the years since it’s gained independence after the Soviet Union’s collapse, Georgia has become a courageous democracy. Its people are making the tough choices that are required of free societies. Since the Rose Revolution in 2003, the Georgian people have held free elections, opened up their economy, and built the foundations of a successful democracy.

Georgia has sent troops to Afghanistan and Iraq to help others achieve the liberty that they struggled so hard to attain. To further strengthen their democracy, Georgia has sought to join the free institutions of the West. The people of Georgia have cast their lot with the free world, and we will not cast them aside.

Georgia’s emergence as a young democracy has been part of an inspiring and hopeful new chapter in Europe’s history. Europe has moved beyond the world wars that killed millions of people, and the Cold War that divided its citizens between two superpowers. Every administration since the end of the Cold War has worked with European partners to extend the reach of liberty and prosperity. And now, for the first time in memory, Europe is becoming a continent that is whole, free, and at peace.

Unfortunately, Russia has tended to view the expansion of freedom and democracy as a threat to its interests. The opposite is true: Free and prosperous societies on Russia’s borders will advance Russia’s interests by serving as sources of stability and economic opportunity.

We hope Russia’s leaders will recognize that a future of cooperation and peace will benefit all parties. The Cold War is over. The days of satellite states and spheres of influence are behind us. A contentious relationship with Russia is not in America’s interest. And a contentious relationship with America is not in Russia’s interest.

With its actions in recent days Russia has damaged its credibility and its relations with the nations of the free world. Bullying and intimidation are not acceptable ways to conduct foreign policy in the 21st century. Only Russia can decide whether it will now put itself back on the path of responsible nations, or continue to pursue a policy that promises only confrontation and isolation. To begin to repair its relations with the United States and Europe and other nations, and to begin restoring its place in the world, Russia must respect the freedom of its neighbors.

Thank you.

END 8:17 A.M. EDT

“Michael Savage Drops Suit Against Islamic Group”

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In a notice filed Thursday, attorney Daniel Horowitz said Savage decided not to file an amended racketeering claim.

In an unusual three-page filing, Horowitz told the judge that he had prepared a 116-page amended lawsuit, but that Savage decided not to file it because of “factors arising out of this litigation but taking place (or potentially have an effect) outside of this litigation.”

The court filing gave no details, but in a telephone interview Horowitz said the factors included an alleged phone threat to Savage. Horowitz said he wasn’t accusing the Islamic group of making threats, but said Savage didn’t want to take the risk that the case could inspire a “lone nut” to try to harm his family.

CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said the Islamic organization had “nothing whatsoever” to do with any threats and that any allegations to that effect would be “scurrilous.””

“Coast Guardsmen to Join Navy SEAL Teams”

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

PRESS RELEASE SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON, Aug. 15, 2008 – Coast Guardsmen soon will be training to join Navy SEAL teams, a senior Coast Guard officer said today.

Rear Adm. Thomas F. Atkin, commander of the Coast Guard’s deployable operations group, said four Coast Guardsmen — two officers and two enlisted sailors — will be selected to begin basic underwater demolition school later this year.

If they graduate, the admiral said, they will become full-fledged members of Navy SEAL teams and deploy with those teams worldwide.

Atkins called the development the beginning of an exciting new era in the Coast Guard. “

Coalition, Iraqi Forces Detain 10 Suspects, Find Weapons Caches

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 15, 2008 – Coalition and Iraqi forces detained 10 suspected terrorists and found numerous weapons caches in recent operations in Baghdad and other areas of Iraq, military officials reported.
Coalition forces detained eight suspected terrorists in central and northern Iraq today while targeting operatives involved in al-Qaida in Iraq bombing networks.

— Forces in Baghdad captured a wanted man with suspected ties to several al-Qaida networks, including foreign-terrorist-facilitation and bombing cells. He also is believed to associate with longtime al-Qaida in Iraq leaders, some of whom were detained in 2006.

— Using information from an Aug. 9 operation, coalition forces detained six suspected terrorists in Mosul, including a wanted man who allegedly is associated with financial support for terrorists in the city.

— In Beiji, about 160 kilometers south of Mosul, coalition forces detained a suspected terrorist while targeting members of a bombing cell known for attacking first responders.

— Soldiers from Company D, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, found a cache in the Saha neighborhood consisting of two 155 mm artillery rounds and a 60 mm mortar round. An explosives ordnance disposal team collected the rounds.

In operations yesterday:

— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, detained a suspected Iranian-backed “special groups” member during a search in the Bayaa community. The patrol delivered the suspect, an alleged cell leader responsible for emplacing roadside bombs and attacking coalition forces, to a coalition base for processing.

— Acting on a tip from a local resident, soldiers with the 25th Infantry Division’s Company C, 1st Infantry Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, seized eight rockets, a bag of small-arms ammunition, 21 cans of 12.7 mm ammunition, 19 82 mm mortars and eight 120 mm mortars in the Mushada area northwest of Baghdad. Throughout the day, soldiers recovered many more munitions, including rockets, grenades, a signal-illumination grenade, Iranian-made mortars and C-4 explosives, electrical blasting caps, small-arms ammunition, and a Dragonov rifle and scope.

— Iraqi soldiers discovered a significant cache in Baghdad’s Sadr City district. A concerned resident’s tip led the soldiers to an abandoned building, where the cache was found hidden behind a false wall. The cache consisted of 22 foam-encased roadside bombs designed to penetrate armor-hulled vehicles, 65 boxes of steel ball bearings, five plastic cylinders, six car alarms, 92 12-volt rechargeable batteries, 26 C-4 demolition charges, 95 copper disks, 61 12-inch lengths of angle iron, 13 electrical blasting caps, two spools of electrical wire, and various electrical and bomb-making components.

— A woman suicide bomber detonated herself south of Baghdad, killing an Iraqi policeman and 17 citizens, and wounding 75 other citizens outside a residential area between the towns of Iskandariyah and Musayyib. The civilian victims were on a pilgrimage to Karbala to commemorate Shabaniyah in celebration of the birth of Mohammed al-Mahdi, the 12th Shiite imam, who disappeared in the 9th century. About 5,000 pilgrims have traversed through the same area without incident as a result of Iraqi security force operations, officials said.

In operations Aug. 13, Iraqi army and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers removed unexploded ordnance and detained a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq member in southern Baghdad’s Rashid district. Iraqi soldiers found a 155 mm artillery round and a 105 mm artillery round during clearing operations in the Saydiyah community. The Iraqi soldiers confiscated the ordnance and brought it to a nearby joint security station, where an explosives ordnance disposal unit disposed of the munitions.

Also on Aug. 13, soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, detained a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq operator in the Jihad area of Rashid who is believed to be responsible for attacks against Iraqi and coalition security forces in the district.

Afghan, Coalition Forces Kill, Detain Militants

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 15, 2008 – Afghan and coalition forces killed dozens of militants and detained eight others in separate operations the past three days in Afghanistan, military officials reported.

Eight militants were detained during a joint Afghan National Army and coalition forces operation to disrupt roadside-bomb networks in Paktika province yesterday. The joint force searched compounds in Orgun district targeting a Taliban sub-commander wanted for kidnapping, murdering several Afghan soldiers, and facilitating roadside-bomb operations.

During the operation, military working dogs chased two men who were trying to flee. Both men received dog-bite injuries, one of which required treatment by coalition medical personnel.

Elsewhere, Afghan national security forces and coalition forces killed two militants after they were attacked during a combat security patrol in Nahr Surkh district, in Helmand province, yesterday. Two militants on motorcycles engaged the patrol with small-arms fire. Afghan and coalition forces returned fire and killed both militants.

In operations Aug. 13- 15, coalition forces and Afghan national security forces killed more than three dozen militants over two days of fierce fighting in southern Afghanistan.

Several groups of militants engaged an Afghan and coalition forces reconnaissance patrol over a two-day period with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and small arms. Afghan and coalition forces returned fire with small arms and close-air support. Afghan and coalition forces destroyed multiple vehicles and enemy fighting positions. They also seized several RPGs, weapons, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and a large opium cache.

Also on Aug. 13, Afghan national security forces and coalition forces killed a militant who attacked a combat security patrol in Shah Wali Kot district, in Kandahar province.

Several militants engaged Afghan and coalition forces with small-arms and indirect fire. Afghan and coalition forces returned fire with small arms and called for supporting fire, killing one militant. An unknown number of militants fled the scene, officials said.

“Borders, cyanide, and terrorism”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Question: You practiced these techniques on the dogs so that later on in one of your operations you would be able to perform such techniques on human beings, is that correct?

Ressam: Yes. We wanted to know what is the effect of the gas, yes.

Question: Some of your potential targets while you were in the camp were American citizens, is that correct?

Ressam: In regard to targets in general, yes. Yes, we were speaking about America as an enemy of Islam.

Question: [O]ne of the examples was to put the cyanide right near the air intake of a building such as a government building, correct?

Ressam: Yes, that’s right.

Question: And the reason that you would put the cyanide, you were trained, near the air intake would be to kill the most amount of people without endangering yourself and without being detected, correct?

Ressam: Yes, that’s how gas is used in killing.

Ressam also described how terrorist coaches instructed al Qaeda campers on how to mix cyanide and other toxic chemicals into an oily paste to smear on door handles so that those who touched them would be killed by toxins coursing through their blood. This method, Ressam confirmed, was to be used “against intelligence officers and other VIPs.””

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Eight to nine tons of cyanide are missing.”

By Carl Cameron

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON — Federal officials have arrested two Al Qaeda terror suspects in the U.S. with documents in their possession about how to poison the country’s water supplies, Fox News has learned.

The first case involves James Ujaama, 36, who surrendered to the FBI last week in Denver. Sources say they found documents about water poisoning among several other terrorism-related documents in his Denver residence.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Investigators say they have evidence indicating that Al-Masri supplied the information about poisoning water supplies to both James Ujaama and Semi Osman.

Furthermore, sources say Al-Masri’s Web site was designed by the Ujaama brothers.”

Re: Dirie. Just your average (Islamic) nutcase traveling around with cyanide. This reminds me of ol' Joel "Joe" Henry Hinrichs III, the University of Oklahoma bomber, he was a social misfit.

The FBI said he wasn't a terrorist either.

The misfits may be easily convinced to carry out a terror attack.

Like Nicky Reilly, the low IQ chap who converted to Islam and set off a bomb in a restaurant in Exeter.

Re Dirie...it’s still under investigation if I understand the public articles I’ve read online.
