Press Release A080322a
March 22, 2008
One terrorist killed, 21 detained in operations against al-Qaeda (Karwi)
BAGHDAD Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained 21 suspected terrorists during operations Friday and today targeting the al-Qaeda network in central and northern Iraq.
Coalition forces conducted an operation Friday near Karwi, targeting an al-Qaeda in Iraq or AQI explosives network. The ground forces detained eight suspected terrorists, including one man who tried to hide his weapon on a child. On the scene, Coalition forces discovered a building with more than 600 pounds of materials used to make explosives, as well as three vehicles and a boat that tested positive for explosives residue. Coalition forces safely destroyed the bomb-making materials, vehicles, boat and building on site to prevent further use by terrorists.
Coalition forces conducted two operations targeting the AQI propaganda network Saturday. West of Samarra, Coalition forces killed an armed terrorist when he threw a grenade at them from a tactical position. On the scene, they found terrorist propaganda materials. In Baghdad, the ground force captured a wanted individual believed to be associated with AQIs media network.
North of Taji, Coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists Saturday, including an alleged AQI operative suspected of organizing bombing attacks.
During two Saturday operations in Mosul, Coalition forces captured an alleged AQI terrorist leader who is believed to have recently moved up in the organization after Coalition operations decimated terrorist leadership in the area. Eight additional suspects were detained.
Coalition forces detained one suspected terrorist Saturday in Biaj while targeting foreign terrorist facilitators.
Iraqi and Coalition force operations have been dismantling al-Qaeda in Iraqs terrorist networks, but they are still a lethal enemy, said Navy Capt. Vic Beck, MNF-I spokesman.

al-Qaida Blamed in Failed US Site Attack

SAN’A, Yemen (AP) - An Al-Qaida terror cell was behind a mortar strike against the U.S. embassy in Yemen that missed its target but killed a security guard and wounded 13 students at a nearby school, an Interior Ministry official said Saturday.
The official, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, said al- Qaida militant Hamza al-Dayan launched three mortars at the embassy Tuesday before fleeing the scene in a vehicle with three accomplices. The mortar shells crashed into the school in the downtown Sawan district of San’a, killing the security guard and wounding 13 schoolgirls, three grievously.
On Thursday, the police arrested five suspects in the attack. It was not clear if they have any connection to al-Dayan and his men, who remain at large.
U.S. officials did not immediately respond to request for comment on Saturday. The embassy has informed its nonessential staff they are permitted to leave Yemen if they want to.
Little is known of al-Dayan, the alleged cell leader. He has been wanted by the Yemeni government, though it was not immediately clear what for.
The heavily guarded U.S. Embassy in Yemen has been targeted in the past.
In March 2002, a Yemeni man lobbed a sound grenade into the embassy grounds a day after Vice President Dick Cheney made a stop for talks with officials at the San’a airport. The attacker, who allegedly sought to retaliate against what he called American bias toward Israel, was sentenced to 10 years in prison but the sentence was later reduced to seven years.
In March 2003, two people were fatally shot and dozens more were injured as police clashed with demonstrators trying to storm the embassy when tens of thousands rallied against the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, a gunman opened fire outside the embassy but was shot and arrested by Yemeni guards. The gunman, armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, claimed he wanted to kill Americans.
Al-Qaida has an active presence in Yemen despite government efforts to destroy it.
The group was blamed for the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole destroyer in the Yemeni port of Aden that killed 17 American sailors and an attack on a French oil tanker that killed one person two years later.
WAY TO GO, TROOPS! Thank you. -Cindy

U.S. military says hits al Qaeda propaganda units
Reuters ^ | March 22, 2008 | Randy Fabi
Posted on 03/22/2008 10:39:51 AM PDT by CreativePerspective
The U.S. military said on Saturday it had hampered al Qaeda’s ability to recruit new members in Iraq by capturing or killing many of the people who make slick videos used to attract disaffected young Muslims.
U.S. military spokesman Rear Admiral Greg Smith said that in the past year, 39 al Qaeda members in Iraq responsible for producing and disseminating videos and other material to thousands of Internet Web sites had been captured or killed.
“The power of this information is obvious. These guys are using material that is used on Web sites to recruit and raise money,” Smith told Reuters in an interview.
“We think the vast majority of this media network has been degraded at this point,” he said, adding that the arrests had led to fewer Internet postings of al Qaeda beheadings, kidnappings and other attacks in Iraq.
Smith said militant groups had become increasingly sophisticated in their distribution of information, publishing professional-looking videos with narration, music and special effects of attacks on U.S. soldiers and Iraqis.
“Most of al Qaeda’s coordinated attacks tend to be so well-planned that they allow for camera crews to be on location filming just before it happens,” he said.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “An international manhunt was launched last night for a Russian-born British media magnate whose mysterious disappearance has possible links to the murder of former KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko.
Jet-setting billionaire Leonid Rozhetskin, an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, vanished from his £1 million home just outside the Latvian capital Riga a week ago.
Last night, Latvian authorities expressed fears that Mr Rozhetskin, one of the co-founders and major shareholders in British business newspaper City AM, may have been murdered.”

“India: Resurgent Babbar Khalsa International”
By Frank Hyland & Animesh Roul
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “This column is another in the ongoing series on the terrorist threat to India and the surrounding region by Frank Hyland and Animesh Roul.
The number of terrorist groups in the world that can claim to have killed more than 300 people in one attack is small, thankfully. Moving from northeast India to the northwest part of the country, though, one enters the self-claimed homeland of Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) - Khalistan. BKI is one of the groups that has earned that dubious distinction of killing more than 300 people in a single attack.”
