Petraeus: Al Qaida Trying to 'Come Back In'

U.S. military officials said there will be no significant reduction in coalition troops in the Baghdad area as part of an effort to stop the Al Qaida offensive in northern Iraq.

They said Al Qaida was trying to reenter Baghdad and reverse its losses in 2007.

"Al Qaida is trying to come back in," U.S. military commander Gen. David Petraeus said. "We can feel it and see it, and what we're trying to do is rip out any roots before they can get deeply into the ground." Read More

Possible Terror Attacks on Indonesian Christians this Easter?

By Jeremy Reynalds
Correspondent for ASSIST News Service

COVENTRY, ENGLAND (ANS) — A charity providing assistance for the persecuted church has received what it calls “credible reports” that the Al-Qaeda linked terrorist organization Jemaah Islamiyah has threatened to target Christians in Indonesia this Easter.

In a news release, the Barnabas Fund reported that Jemaah Islamiyah (www.cfr.org/publication/8948) has been responsible for many attacks in the past. The group is believed to have organized the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005, and bomb attacks at churches on Christmas Eve in 2000.

Jemaah Islamiyah is dedicated to creating a single Islamic state throughout South-East Asia under Islamic (Shariah) law. It considers non-Muslims as legitimate targets and is active throughout the region.

The Barnabas Fund reported that threats to Christians on major celebrations such as Easter and Christmas are frequent in Indonesia, and security guards are often posted outside churches.
Some churches in Jakarta keep metal detectors near their entrances to try to thwart bomb attacks.

The Barnabas Fund said that Easter will therefore be a time of great anxiety for Indonesia`s Christians. With that in mind, the Barnabas Fund asked for prayer that Indonesian Christians will be able to worship in safety this Easter.

In addition, the group asked for prayer that Indonesian authorities will be proactive in protecting Christians from terrorist attacks, and that they will catch those who threaten to attack Christians.

“UK: Rapist Protected By Mosque Members”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “At first Khalisadar said to police that there had been no rape and that the woman had consented to sex. Then he changed his story and said that he had been at East London Mosque. He said that he had been preaching there during Ramadan, giving a talk on the subject of repentance.

He managed to get seven men from the mosque to give him a fake alibi, backing up his story that he had been at the mosque when he had been raping the woman.

Last month, Belal Ahmed, 24, Tanbir Ahmed, 24, Mohammed Tahar Hussain, 25, Iqbal Hussain-Ali, 25, Tony Autier, 30, Thouhid Ahmed, 24, and Shaherul Islam Khan, 24 admitted lying to the police in their statements. They were sentenced on Monday to 12 months’ jail for perverting the course of justice.

It appears that the reason which had brought Khalisadar to the attention of the police was his apparent involvement with former Al Muhajiroun member Kazi Nurur Rahman. Rahman was linked to the terrorists of Operation Crevice, and had been studied by police since July 2005. Rahman was sent to trial on December 19, 2005. In May 2006, Rahman pleaded guilty to charges under section 17 of the Terrorism Act 2000, of attempting to procure weaponry for a terrorist attack. He was jailed for nine years.

While Khalisadar was under police investigation, he was arrested for downloading images of child abuse from the internet. As a result of this arrest, he was given a DNA test, which matched the sample from the woman’s rape.”

Al-Jazeera to air new Bin Laden tape

Arabic news channel Al-Jazeera said Thursday it will shortly air a new audiotape of Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in which he talks about the “seige of Gaza”.

Bin Laden resurfaced on Wednesday in an audiotape warning Europe of a “reckoning” over the publication by several newspapers of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

Italy calls Al-Qaida accusation of ‘new crusade’ a serious threat

By The Associated Press (snipped)

Italian security officials are treating Osama bin Laden’s new accusations against Pope Benedict’s involvement in a campaign against Islam as a serious threat, Ansa news agency said on Thursday, quoting a source at the interior ministry’s anti-terrorism unit.

An interior ministry spokesman said security officials will meet on Friday to examine the Al-Qaida leader’s taped message, in which he said offending cartoons of Islam’s Prophet Mohammad were part of a “new crusade” against Islam involving Pope Benedict.

Bin Laden addressed the “wise men” of the European Union in a new audio message posted on extremist Web sites late Wednesday slamming the publication of drawings insulting to the Prophet Mohammed and vowed a strong reaction.

The message, which appeared on a militant Web site that has carried Al-Qaida statements in the past and bore the logo of the extremist group’s media wing al-Sahab, showed a still image of bin Laden aiming with a AK-47. . .

Bin Laden urges support for Iraq insurgency

Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden urged Muslims on Thursday to support the insurgency in Iraq as the best way to support the Palestinians, and accused Arab leaders of backing Israeli attacks on the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

“The nearest Jihad (holy war) battlefield to support our people in Palestine is the battlefield of Iraq ... It should be taken care of and supported,” said an audiotape attributed to him aired on Al-Jazeera television.

Bin Laden releases new audio recording

One day after he lashed out at Europeans over controversial cartoons, Osama bin Laden says in a new recording that Muslims need to focus on the “struggle” in Iraq and wage war to liberate the Palestinians, according to a report on Al-Jazeera that is being cited by multiple news agencies.

“Palestine cannot be retaken by negotiations and dialogue, but with fire and iron,” the fugitive leader of al-Qaeda reportedly says in the recording.

‘Stale’ bin Laden Tape Have Some Experts Questioning Strategy Behind the Message

Thursday, March 20, 2008

A newly released Usama bin Laden audiotape labeled ‘stale’ by some terror experts has raised questions about whether his seemingly outdated message is really a strategy.

On the tape, released late Wednesday, bin Laden accuses Pope Benedict XVI of helping wage a “new Crusade” against Islam and warns of a “severe” reaction from Muslims to the publication of cartoons in Europe depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

Some analysts on Thursday were focusing less on what was said in the message than what wasn’t. They said the apparent lack of references to events after 2006, such as the reprinting of controversial cartoons, which caused widespread rioting when they were first published by a Danish newspaper in 2005, and the absence of talk about the Iraq war indicate that bin Laden’s message could have been recorded months, even years, ago. Bin Laden also made no mention of a soon-to-be released anti-Islam film, “Fitna,” by Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders.

New Usama bin Laden Tape Slams Palestinian Negotiations, Urges Holy War for Liberation

Thursday, March 20, 2008

Usama bin Laden

CAIRO, Egypt — Pan-Arab Al-Jazeera TV on Thursday broadcast what it described as excerpts from a new audio tape by Usama bin Laden in which the Al Qaeda leader slammed Palestinian negotiations with Israel and urged holy war for the liberation of Palestine.

In the audio excerpts broadcast by the Doha, Qatar-based television, bin Laden said that “Palestine cannot be retaken by negotiations and dialogue, but with fire and iron.”

Bin Laden also called on Palestinians who are unable to fight in the “land of Al-Quds” — a Muslim reference to Jerusalem — to join the Al Qaeda fight and the holy war, or jihad, in Iraq.

“The nearest field of jihad today to support our people in Palestine is the Iraqi field,” bin Laden said.

“We tell our brothers in Palestine who could not join the jihad in the land of Al-Quds, to get rid of illusions of political parties and groups which are mired in trickery of the blasphemous democracy and to take their positions among the ranks of the mujahideen in Iraq,” he said.

Such a Palestinian fight in Iraq should be “concentrated on and supported by all Muslims, specially from neighboring countries,” bin Laden added and also called on people of Syria, Lebanon Jordan and Saudi Arabia to “help in support of their mujahedeen brothers in Iraq, which is the greatest opportunity and the biggest task.”

Minneapolis Secret Service Probes Alleged Bush Assassination Plot

Thursday, March 20, 2008

Secret Service agents in Minnesota are investigating an imprisoned felon from Fargo, N.D., who they say brought a gun to a 2005 rally featuring President Bush and later made threats against the president.

David Cvijanovich began serving 19 months in jail in 2006 after a conviction for damaging government property and threatening a federal officer in 2001, reports KMSP FOX 9 in Minneapolis.

The possible assassination plot was uncovered by fellow inmates, who informed authorities. During a search of Cvijanovich’s property, agents found a gun and several disguises, KMSP reports.

Cvijanovich denies the assassination attempt, saying lying convicts are just looking to get time off their sentences. He has not been charged for any activities at the rally, but is facing charges for the threats.

“Bin Laden condemns Gaza siege”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Osama bin Laden has said that the best way for Muslims to help Palestinians is to support Iraqis fighting against the government and US forces.

In the audiotape, which was the second to be released by the al-Qaeda leader in 24 hours, he also accused Arab leaders of backing the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip.

“The nearest jihad battlefield to support our people in Palestine is the battlefield of Iraq … It should be taken care of and supported,” he said the audiotape released on Thursday.

“Palestine cannot be retaken by negotiations and dialogue, but with fire and iron”.

“The suffocating siege imposed upon the Gaza Strip came into existence after the support offered by the Arab governments to the US and Zionist entity in Annapolis at the expense of the resistance in Palestine,” the voice said.”

“Iraqi and coalition operations are degrading the terrorist networks, but al Qaeda in Iraq is still a deadly enemy and a tough fight remains ahead,” said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a spokesman for Multinational Force Iraq. “The Iraqi people are rejecting al Qaeda’s extremist ideology and indiscriminate violence, and we are committed to helping them achieve a secure future.”

In operations yesterday:

Coalition forces returned fire, killing four terrorists. The vehicle, which contained rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, land mines, homemade explosives and other bomb-making materials, was destroyed by a fixed-wing aircraft to prevent further use for terrorist activity. Coalition forces stopped another vehicle nearby with two men inside. One man exited the vehicle and drew his weapon. Coalition forces killed him. The other man surrendered and was detained.

In March 18 operations:

— The Iraqi National Police seized a substantial weapons cache in eastern Baghdad. The police had received a tip from a local concerned citizen about a large amount of weapons being stockpiled. In other news, U.S. soldiers from 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team captured a wanted criminal suspect during a March 16 operation in Narhwan. The detained individual was wanted by Iraqi security forces and coalition forces for his alleged role in several improvised explosive device attacks.
