“French extremists dream of jihad in Iraq”
By ANGELA CHARLTON, Associated Press Writer
Sun Mar 30, 7:39 PM ET
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “PARIS - Boubakeur el Hakim traded his Paris neighborhood of boulangeries and halal butcher shops for the insurgent camps of Iraq. When he came home, he told his war stories to other young men on the forgotten edges of French society, allegedly persuading some to follow in his footsteps.
His younger brother did, and died fighting U.S. forces.
After years of investigation by French authorities, el Hakim, 24, went on trial this month in a case exposing how the Iraq war has sucked radical youths from Europe to a battlefield where they have learned skills that officials fear may one day be used in domestic terror attacks.
Along with four other young Frenchmen, a Moroccan and an Algerian, el Hakim is accused of funneling French Muslim fighters to Iraq. All the Frenchmen except suspected ringleader Farid Benyettou, 26, have acknowledged going to Iraq or planning to go. All deny inciting others to go.
All seven men are accused of criminal association with a terrorist enterprise, a vague charge that carries a maximum 10-year sentence, though the prosecutor only asked for between three and eight years.”

“Seoul remains calm despite threats from N. Korea”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “SEOUL, March 31 (Yonhap) — South Korea remained silent Monday to North Korea’s provocative threats to turn everything in the country into ashes while officials at the Defense Ministry said they simply see no need to respond to what they called “unfortunate” rhetoric.
The Defense Ministry was earlier expected to issue a statement, but ministry officials said they were still weighing their options.”

Interesting insight to Mookie’s actions in Basara:
http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/sadr-rages-against-iran/
Feeling the heat of the recent offensive against his forces around Iraq, Muqtada Al Sadr, who has long been suspected of receiving support from the Iranian government, decided to publicly condemn the Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei.....snip.....
Primarily, Al Sadr is furious at the fact that members of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI), have joined the Iraqi armys offensive against his forces in important areas such as Baghdad and Basra.
ISCI, which is led by Ayatollah Abdul Aziz al-Hakim has the support of middle and upper class Shiites in Iraq, while Al Sadrs Mahdi army has the backing of poor Shiites. Al Sadr is not only upset because ISCI has decided to turn its guns against fellow Shiites, but also at the fact that ISCI has been the recipient of a larger amount of aid from Tehran than his organization. This may lead Al Sadr to believe that ISCI has embarked on this adventure, with Tehrans blessing. This belief would explain why, during his controversial interview with Al Jazeera on Saturday night, Al Sadr condemned what he called Iranian intervention in Iraqs security and politics.

Puppet Show From Hamas TV Shows Child Stabbing Bush
Monday, March 31, 2008
A children’s puppet show featured on Hamas TV shows a child stabbing President Bush to death.
“Who are you to come here and threaten me?” Bush says in the puppet show video. “You are on my own turf, you little child, you. Get out.”
The child tells Bush that he killed his father in the Iraq war, which made him an orphan.
“I have come to take revenge with this sword revenge for my mother and my sisters,” the child puppet says. “You are a criminal, Bush.”
“I will kill you, Bush, because that is your fate,” the child says before stabbing Bush repeatedly.
The show aired on Al-Aqsa TV on March 30.
Yep, that is interesting.
OPINION:
Al Sadr seems to be a short-timer.
Thank you drymans wife for the heads up.

Defense Department Official Pleads Guilty to Espionage Charge Involving China
WASHINGTON, D.C. Gregg William Bergersen, age 51, of Alexandria, Virginia, pled guilty today to a one-count criminal information charging him with conspiracy to disclose national defense information to persons not entitled to receive it, in violation of 18 U.S.C., Sections 793(d) and (g). Bergersen was arrested on February 11, 2008 on a criminal complaint charging this same offense.
Patrick Rowan, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security; U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg of the Eastern District of Virginia; and Arthur M. Cummings, II, Executive Assistant Director of the FBIs National Security Branch, made the announcement after the plea was accepted by U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema. Bergersen faces up to ten years in prison when he is sentenced on June 20, 2008.
Mr. Bergersen betrayed his oath to serve and protect our nation when he used his government position to access and pass national defense information to a person he knew was not entitled to receive it. This case serves as a reminder that espionage networks are relentless in their efforts to steal our secrets and continue to pose a serious threat to our national security, said Patrick Rowan, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security.
Every day, dedicated men and women throughout government serve our nation with honor and dignity. Mr. Bergersen chose a different path a path of dishonor that is deeply disappointing, said U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg.
According to a Statement of Facts filed in Court with Bergersens Plea Agreement, the criminal conduct spanned the time period of March 2007 to February 2008. During this time, Bergersen — a Weapons Systems Policy Analyst at the Arlington, Va.-based Defense Security Cooperation Agency, an agency within the Department of Defense — provided national defense information on numerous occasions to Tai Shen Kuo, a New Orleans businessman.
Much of the information pertained to U.S. military sales to Taiwan and was classified at the Secret level. During the course of the conspiracy, Kuo cultivated a friendship with Bergersen, bestowing on him gifts, cash payments, dinners, and money for gambling during trips to Las Vegas.
Unbeknown to Bergersen, Kuo passed along to an official of the government of the PRC the information Bergersen had provided him. In some of his meetings with Kuo, Bergersen cautioned that the information he was providing was classified.
On one such occasion, in July 2007, Bergersen handed Kuo a classified document with jagged cut marks at the top and bottom of each page. Bergersen pointed out to Kuo that he had cut off the documents title and had also removed the classification markings from the top and bottom of every page, ensuring Kuo that he was being given classified information.
Espionage charges are still pending against Kuo and an alleged conspirator, Yu Xin Kang, both of whom remain held without bond.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) provided substantial assistance and cooperation throughout the course of the investigation.
The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Neil Hammerstrom and Aaron Zebley from the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Trial Attorney Ryan Fayhee from the Counterespionage Section of the Justice Departments National Security Division.

“Islamic countries want Dutch to ban Wilders movie”
Radio Netherlands ^ | March 30 2008 | Sebastiaan Gottlieb
Posted on 03/31/2008 2:32:40 PM PDT by knighthawk
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The ambassadors of 26 Islamic countries want the Netherlands to investigate whether the film Fitna made by Dutch right-wing populist MP Geert Wilders can be banned. They asked Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen whether it is possible to start legal proceedings against the anti-Islam film. The meeting at the ministry in The Hague was attended by ambassadors of countries including Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
Mr Verhagen told the 26 ambassadors he was pleased that responses from the Muslim world up to now had been moderate. He said the public prosecutor was investigating whether any offence had been committed, and the Dutch government clearly distanced itself from the film.
At the same time he called on the ambassadors to ensure Dutch citizens and organisations abroad were protected. “Let’s keep heads cool and relations warm,” he added. “We know about the concerns and feelings about this film among the international Muslim community, but hurt feelings must never be an excuse for aggression and threats.”
“Christian terrorist”
In Indonesia, a few dozen demonstrators protested against Geert Wilders’ film outside the Dutch embassy. They waved banners reading “Holland go to Hell” and “Kill Geert Wilders”, threw eggs and bottles of water at the building and chanted anti-Dutch slogans. One protestor called on Muslims around the world to kill Mr Wilders, calling him a “Christian terrorist”.”

U.S. Charges Suspect in African Embassy Bombing
By Sgt. Sara Moore, USA
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, March 31, 2008 Charges have been sworn against a Guantanamo Bay detainee, alleging he was involved in the preparation and planning of the 1998 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania, Defense Department officials announced today.
Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, of Zanzibar, Tanzania, is being charged with murder in violation of the law of war, murder of protected persons, attacking civilians, attacking civilian objects, intentionally causing serious bodily injury, destruction of property in violation of the law of war, and terrorism, Air Force Brig. Gen. Thomas W. Hartmann, legal advisor to the convening authority in the DoD Office of Military Commissions, told reporters at the Pentagon.
Ghailani is the 15th detainee against whom charges have been sworn under the Military Commissions Act.
The chief prosecutor in the case has recommended that the charges against Ghailani be referred as capital, Hartmann said. The charges now will be reviewed by Hartmann and forwarded to Susan Crawford, the convening authority, who will decide whether the case should be referred to trial and whether the charges should be capital, which would mean a maximum penalty of death.
The bombing of the embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, happened on Aug. 7, 1998, the eight-year anniversary of the start of Operation Desert Shield. A truck bomb exploded at the embassy within four minutes of another bomb exploding at the American Embassy in Kenya. The bombing in Tanzania killed 11 people and injured hundreds.
The charges allege that Ghailani was involved in the following actions:
— Purchasing TNT, detonators and detonation cord on multiple occasions and transporting the bomb components to Dar es Salaam;
— Moving the bomb components to various safe houses in and around Dar es Salaam;
— Assisting in the purchase of the truck used in the attack;
— Facilitating the purchase of oxygen cylinder tanks that were used as bomb components;
— Escorting the bomb engineer between Dar es Salaam and Mombasa, Kenya, after the bomb had been assembled;
— Scouting the American Embassy with the suicide-bomb driver;
— Meeting with co-conspirators in Nairobi, Kenya, shortly before the bombing; and
— Joining the co-conspirators on a flight from Nairobi to Karachi, Pakistan, one day prior to the bombing.
Ghailani is further charged with providing material support to terrorism, Hartmann said. This charge alleges that, after the bombing, Ghailani continued in his service to al Qaeda as a document forger, physical trainer at an al Qaeda training camp, and as a bodyguard for Osama bin Laden. Ghailani was arrested in July 2004 in Pakistan, Hartmann said.
There is no timeline for the charges to be reviewed and for Crawford to make her decision, Hartmann said, but the office of the convening authority will work as quickly as possible on this case.
This is the seventh case to be sworn as capital; six detainees were charged Feb. 11 with involvement in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and their cases were recommended to be capital. Those cases still are being reviewed in the office of the convening authority, Hartmann said.
Under the Military Commissions Act, if a case is referred as capital and goes to trial, a military commission panel of at least 12 members must determine guilt or innocence and sentencing by a unanimous decision. The accused has the right to appeal the case all the way to the U. S. Supreme Court, as well as the rights to elect not to testify at trial; to be represented by detailed military counsel, as well as civilian counsel of his own selection and at no expense to the government; to examine all evidence presented to a jury by the prosecution; to obtain evidence and to call witnesses on his own behalf, including expert witnesses; to confront and cross-examine every witness called by the prosecution; to be present during the presentation of evidence; and to have no statements obtained by torture admitted.
Hartmann emphasized that the charges are only allegations that Ghailani has committed offenses under the Military Commissions Act, and he remains innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
