He may be the president who governed during the Civil War, freeing the slaves, but under a new curriculum proposal for North Carolina high schools, U.S. history would begin years after President Lincoln, with the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes in 1877.

I’m sure they’ll learn ‘em about her. /s
So, everybody, let’ get very vocal, give them our feedback, and give them hell....they shall not keep our children ignorant of our Founding Fathers, our country's values and beliefs, in this school or ANY OTHER SCHOOL. SPEAK UP NOW AND STOP THIS FROM SPREADING TO OTHER SCHOOLS.
More importantly, they eliminate that pesky history of the Republican Party being formed to eradicate slavery and that even more pesky history of the Democrat Party terrorizing blacks in the south during Reconstruction and throwing out elected black Congressmen.
So basically they want to kick out the only Constitutional part of U.S. History (Pre-civil war), so they can spend more time on indoctrinating kids in the “global issues” of the environment and stuff?
Someone needs to fire theses so called “State education leaders” they are clearly not interested in education but rather “progressive” indoctrination.
If they are refering to U.S. History classes in High School, idk bout the rest of the country, or how other areas currently do it, but when I was in school (graduated in 1997 from High School), US History before 1860 was taught in 8th grade. US History from the Civil War onward was taught junior year. So unless there is something specifically darker below the surface, other than the start date, this strikes me in and of itself as nothing unusual.
I had global studies in 9th grade, but US history in 10th, and civics/government in 11th. 12th I took college level history. However it is very common to break up the semester in pre and post reconstruction. I was taught the US didn’t really start until after the Civil War anyways (load of crap)
I took AP US History in high school in Raleigh, NC. Great class, I learned tons about our country and why things are the way they are (it also taught me to be a good writer since we had to do so much of it!).
This is ridiculous, to put it mildly.
Socialist Labor Party of North America holds 1st national convention Dec 26 1877
Washington Post publishes 1st edition 6 Dec 1877...
“Who controls the past, controls the future; who controls the present, controls the past.”
Our Social Studies sequence is weird, and it is not streamed (no Honors available):
7th
World Studies 1 - Ancient history to Rome (not sure of Rome breakoff but it does not include the Fall). Then they do modern Russia
World Studies 2 - Basically geography and studying major countries/regions
These two can be taught in either order
8th
Economics and U.S. History I (Colonial period to Jackson with a sketch of European history from Middle Ages to Colonial period) - Notice the huge gap in world history - no history being taught between Rome and the colonial period
9th
U.S. History II (full year) (Jackson to 1945 or so)
10th
U.S. History III and U.S. Government (1945 to modern times) and the typical Civics course I think. These again can be in either order
11th
A type of World Studies (European, Latin, or Asian) and probably Economics (to satisfy an Economics requirement)
12th
No required courses but AP U.S. History, AP Psych, and dual level Sociology are offered.
I can’t understand why Economics occurs twice - just make the High School Economics required for everyone. My daughter thought her 8th grade Econ was worthless (she got over a 100 in the class, and the teacher treated the students like elementary children). Actually my daughter has had nothing good to say about 7th or 8th grade Social Studies. The material she learned so far could be compressed significantly.
>> This is pure and simple.
>> Deny American children their heritage.
Damn straight! NC better wake up now!
Makes sense to me..the first black graduate West Point was in 1877.
The election of Hayes, a republican over a democrat, is similar to Bush Gore in 2000. many said the democrat won.
Looks like it's time for Tea Parties at the School Board meetings North Carolina.
Rally Mohawks!
Copperheads and peace democrats.
That was my thought, too.
It sounds like they are counting on the students to already have a thorough knowledge of U.S. history pre-1877 from previous years of schooling. However, when I had it in 11th grade, we started at the beginning and went to present times. I was glad we did because most students have forgotten a lot of it as it had been several years and with summer and what not. I’m horrible with history and remembering dates, etc.
