Turkish raid on al-Qaeda cell
If you’re going to resurrect the caliphate, might as well focus on where it last stood. “Turkish police arrest 21 al Qaeda suspects,” from France 24, August 29:
Turkish police on Friday arrested 21 suspected members of Al-Qaeda in a major operation in Istanbul, Anatolia news agency reported.
Many of the suspects had received military training in Afghanistan and were preparing attacks, said the report, which did not give sources. Raids were carried out in several districts of the city.
The suspects will appear in court in coming days.
Turkish police detained 24 suspected members of Osama bin Laden’s group, including Al-Qaeda’s alleged Istanbul chief, in April.
Al-Qaeda was blamed for bomb attacks in the city in November 2003 on two synagogues and British-owned bank HSBC in which 63 people were killed and hundreds wounded.
In February 2007, a Turkish court jailed seven accused Al-Qaeda militants, including a Syrian said to have planned and financed the attacks, to life jail terms.

TIMES ONLINE.co.uk: "THREE QUESTIONED OVER THREAT TO ASSASSINATE GORDON BROWN" by Sean O'Neill (ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Three men arrested under terrorism legislation are being questioned over internet threats to kill Gordon Brown and Tony Blair. One of the men being questioned by police in Manchester is suspected of posting a death threat on a recognised jihadi website and styling himself Sheikh Umar Rabie al-Khalaila, leader of al-Qaeda in Britain. The threats appeared on the al-Ekhlaas website -- which has been used by al-Qaeda and is monitored by intelligence agencies - in January. They gave warning of a wave of suicide attacks in Britain and against British interests around the world unless the group's demands for a withdrawal from Iraq and the release of Muslim prisoners were met.") Tip from local resident leads IPs, MND-B MPs to weapons cache
Multi-National Division Baghdad PAO
BAGHDAD Iraqi Police and Multi-National Division Baghdad military police Soldiers seized a weapons cache near al-Jihad on a tip from a local resident Aug. 28.
The local citizen approached the IPs and Soldiers from the 463rd MP Company, 18th MP Brigade, while they were conducting a Police Transition Team support mission at a nearby Criminal Investigation Division station.
The IPs and MPs went to the indicated house and seized an anti-aircraft rocket, two radar guns, six handheld radios, a notebook filled with phone numbers and an undetermined amount of money orders, each with individual values averaging $3,000 in value.
This is a good sign that relationships are improving in Baghdad, when local residents feel comfortable enough to approach Iraqi Police and Coalition forces and provide this type of information to our security forces, said Maj. Michael Indovina, spokesman for the 18th MP Bde., MND-B. This is a sign that residents are ready to work and trust the IP as they improve in their capability and begin to take over as the primary force in protecting and serving their citizens.
Taking these materials off the streets of Baghdad eliminates another opportunity for criminals to hurt innocent people of Iraqi as they strive to put the years of fighting behind them and continue to move on with their lives.
