Gunmen kill 5 in attack on Mexico police

MEXICO CITY - Suspected drug cartel gunmen killed five people in an attack on a police station in central Mexico and during their subsequent escape, authorities said on Saturday.
At least six masked, heavily armed men raided the police station in the town of Jerecuaro, in the state of Guanajuato, on Friday, shooting and killing two police officers and a secretary.
Making their escape in sport utility vehicles, they gunned down another two police officers on a nearby highway, state authorities said.
Police later found one of the gunmen dead of a gunshot wound in one of three abandoned bullet-riddled vehicles that also contained hand grenades, assault rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, cocaine and police uniforms.
State police said the attack might have been a reprisal for a recent crackdown on drug cartels.
President Felipe Calderon has deployed thousands of soldiers and federal police to hot spots across Mexico, where cartel violence has killed more than 500 people so far this year, according to media, and left more than 2,500 dead in 2007.
In the Gulf coast state of Veracruz on Saturday, gunmen attacked a military checkpoint on a highway, killing one soldier before escaping, the army said in a statement.
More than 20 people were found dead in Mexico on Friday in violence linked to drug cartels, media reported.

EL PASO, Texas — The killings in Juarez have spread outside of city limits and into other Mexican cities.
This after police said 4 cops were found dead and burned in the city of Palomas, Mexico, Friday.
The owner of the “Los Lamenots” ranch found the bodies and made the call to authorities.
The violence has gotten so bad, officials have advised for no one to enter the city.

Syria has deployed three military divisions along the borders with Lebanon amidst mounting tension in the region, press reports said Sunday. The leading daily an-Nahar attributed the report to well informed sources, noting that the deployment backs a similar massing of fighters by pro-Syrian Palestinian factions in the Bekaa valley, especially Ahmed Jibril's Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) in the Qoussayah area.
The development followed Hizbullah's open war declaration against Israel after the Feb. 12 assassination in Damascus of the party's Imad Mughniyeh by a bomb explosion. Hizbullah is sponsoring a major rally in south Beirut's suburb of Rweis on Monday to commemorate Mughniyeh, labeled commander of the "two victories" in reference to the Liberation of south Lebanon from Israeli occupation in May 2000 and the 34-day war against Israel in the summer of 2006.
Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has pledged that "thousands of Imad Mughniyehs would confront the Zionist enemy if it invades Lebanon." Israel has ordered its troops on alert to confront a possible attack by Hizbullah operatives when the party marks Mughniyeh's memorial rally on Monday, 40 days after his assassination.

10,000 Syrian troops deploy in Kurdish region

The Syrian army has moved some 10,000 soldiers into five cities in the country's northern, Kurdish-dominated region, following violence over the weekend, which left three people dead. The killing occurred during celebration of the Kurdish New Year - Nowruz - in the city Qameshli close to the border with Turkey, according to several local news sources.

US 'deploys nuclear sub to Persian Gulf'

An American nuclear submarine has crossed the Suez Canal to join the US fleet stationed in the Persian Gulf, Egyptian sources say. Egyptian officials reported that the nuclear submarine crossed the canal along with a destroyer on Friday and Egyptian forces were put on high alert when the navy convoy was passing through the canal.

MDA raises alert level 40 days after Mugniyah assassination

Magen David Adom's Chief Medical Officer, Eli Bin, on Sunday raised the organization’s alert level to “B level”, the second highest, due to security concerns on the 40th day following the assassination of Hizbullah commander Imad Mugniyah. To accommodate this increased alert level, MDA will double the number of manned ambulances at its stations across Israel.

Jamestown Foundation has an article this month about instructions for making anthrax posted on a jihadi internet forum. “A forum participant, nicknamed al-Faz, posted a detailed description of anthrax production techniques dedicated to jihadis everywhere: ‘Long awaited good news for you, God’s soldiers. It’s time to use biological weapons against God’s enemies.’” “Photos are included of the microscopic phases of the process, including the extraction of anthrax bacteria from a sample of dirt that contains the infected remains of dead goats or other grazing animals’ remnants.”
The original posting includes safety instructions for the different phases of production. It reminds me of the comment by the fellow recently who suffered respiratory distress after making ricin — for the purpose of self-defense — he bizarrely claims. He told his brother: “It sure worked on me.”
The author of the post on the jihadi forum explains: “I wanted to contribute in the preparations against enemies of God. Consider me the servant of the mujahideen. I closely follow your news. May God reward you for your sacrifices. It would make me very happy to see you use biological weapons against God’s enemies. Wait for my next detailed posting on how to build a Cessna 128 aircraft.”

Saudi Shura council to discuss plan for sudden radioactive hazards

Riyadh - The Saudi Shura council will secretly discuss national plans to deal with any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards that may affect the kingdom following experts' warnings of possible attacks on Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactors, media reports said Saturday. The Saudi-based King Abdul-Aziz City for Science and Technology has prepared a proposal that encapsulates the probabilities of leaking nuclear and radiation hazards in case of any unexpected nuclear attacks in Iran, the Okaz Saudi newspaper said.
The Saudi Shura or consultative council plans to debate the proposal on Sunday. The power plants in the south-western Iranian port of Bushehr were built with German assistance in 1974 and resumed with Russian aid in 1992, after it had been stopped by the Islamic revolution.

I think it’s not only unique for an existing state, but probably unique for any state at any time to be in such a position.
You mentioned, right off the top, nuclear annihilation. I presume you mean, predominately, threats from Iran?
Right. In addition, the Syrians are building chemical or have chemical warfare capacity; others are doing biological, so all sorts of WMD —not just nuclear.”

BAGHDAD, March 23 (KUNA) — Up to 15 Al-Qaeda operatives were killed Sunday in an air raid by US fighter jets over Diyala district, northeast of the capital, Baghdad. Iraqi security sources told KUNA that the American planes shelled Al-Qaeda hideouts in the village of Baladros, southeast of Baqouba, Diyala’s largest city, killing 15 members of Al-Qaeda.
Meanwhile, official spokesman for the law implementation plan Major General Qassem Atta said no military attire would be on sale at markets to prevent suicide bombers from impersonating security personnel.

BALAD, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces, advised by U.S. Special Forces, detained six suspected militants during separate operations March 22.
In Baghdad, Iraqi Special Operations Forces detained one suspected militant who is believed to be the leader of an improvised explosive device and explosively formed penetrator cell. One other suspect is being held for questioning.
In the northern Hamrin Lake region, northwest of Jalula, Iraqi Security Forces detained a suspect who is said to be involved in a criminal element in the area. Improvised explosive device material was found at the site.
In Al Kut, the Al Kut Iraqi Special Weapons and Tactics unit detained three suspects believed to be responsible for criminal activities in Al Kut.

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers detained a suspected terrorist March 21.
The suspect was detained after a lengthy investigation of evidence collected nearly a year ago from a munitions cache find.
Soldiers from 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad seized a munitions cache in West Rashid March 31, 2007, that consisted of rocket-propelled grenade rounds, 107mm rockets, mortar rounds and several blocks of TNT, as well as various smalls-arms munitions, repair parts and time fuses.
In January, more evidence turned up that linked the suspect to the weapons cache.
“His capture shows two points,” said Col. Allen Batschelet, chief of staff, MND-B. “Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers are here to protect the Iraqi people, and we will never cease in our efforts to bring terrorists and criminals to justice.”
Evidence that links criminals and terrorists to previous acts of terrorism and violence generally comes to light 2-3 times per week, said Batschelet.

Zawahiri calls for attacks on Israel (snipped)
“Israel and additional Western targets must be attacked as revenge for Israel’s aggressive policy in the Gaza Strip,” Osama bin Laden’s deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri said in a recording released by an al-Qaida-affiliated Website on Sunday night, several days after bin Laden himself called on Palestinians to “suspend all negotiations with Israel and start a Jihad war to liberate Palestine.”
“Muslims, this is our day,” Zawahiri said. “Strike the interests of Jews and Americans, and all those who wield aggression against the Muslims. Today no one can say that we are battling the Jews in Palestine alone.” . . .
Zawahiri lambasted the leaders of several Arab states, who he claimed were complicit with Israel in the blockade of the Gaza Strip, calling the leaders of Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia “part of a satanic pact.”
“This satanic pact reveals to us its ugliness and baseness…They allowed Israel to carry out aerial raids in the Gaza Strip on a regular basis, and swore to bring an end to rocket fire on Israel,” Zawahiri charged. . .

With him were Iranian intelligence officials involved in planning overseas terrorist operations. The guest of honor was there, too, and would soon gain worldwide notoriety: Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, the top deputy to Osama bin Laden. Zawahiri had come to discuss Al Qaeda’s latest plans, and to relay his boss’s keen desire to cooperate more with Iran. It was January 2001, eight months before the attacks of September 11.
The late arrival, who now entered the room, was critical to Al Qaeda’s strategy. For 20 years, Zawahiri had been working with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, and his main partner had been this man whose youthful appearance belied his cruel nature. He was Imad Mugniyah, Iran’s star operative, a terrorist with legendary skills and the mind of a psychopath. Lebanese by birth, he had risen over the years to become the top military official in the Iranian-backed terrorist organization Hezbollah.
. . . Joining the seated group, Mugniyah listened as Zawahiri said that it was time for Al Qaeda and Iran to bury the hatchet. Iran’s past support for the Taliban opposition in Afghanistan had angered bin Laden, but differences now had to be put behind them. Fighting the common enemy, the United States and Israel, is much more important than the things that divide us, Zawahiri told the Iranians. Nateq-Nouri agreed — which meant the alliance had the political blessing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
After the meeting, Mugniyah took Zawahiri and his men to meet the leaders of the Qods Force. Already Iran was facilitating the travel of Al Qaeda operatives to and from Afghanistan, as the 9/11 Commission later found. Zawahiri wanted to know if there were ways to expand this cooperation. In the weeks to come, Mugniyah would find those ways. . .

In a January 26 op-ed in the Iranian daily Kayhan, the paper’s editor, Hossein Shariatmadari, who is close to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, called on Muslims to unite in a retaliatory attack on American, European, and Israeli “sensitive centers” because of “the war crimes that these countries are committing in the Gaza Strip” and because of their support for Israel.
In his op-ed, Shar’iatmadari stressed that American and European civilians must be harmed in these attacks, so as to make the U.S. and the European countries change their policy towards Israel. He further called for harming Israelis worldwide, and explained that Islamic regimes that prevent an Islamic attack on Israel must be toppled, because they are defending the enemy. . .

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission voted 5-0 to approve the terminal, which would be located 9 miles from Long Island and 10 miles from Connecticut. FERC says it would be the first floating terminal in the U.S. for storage and delivery of natural gas.”
