Petraeus: Al Qaida Trying to 'Come Back In'

U.S. military officials said there will be no significant reduction in coalition troops in the Baghdad area as part of an effort to stop the Al Qaida offensive in northern Iraq.

They said Al Qaida was trying to reenter Baghdad and reverse its losses in 2007.

"Al Qaida is trying to come back in," U.S. military commander Gen. David Petraeus said. "We can feel it and see it, and what we're trying to do is rip out any roots before they can get deeply into the ground." Read More

“A survivor gives his account of Holocaust”
Sunday, March 09, 2008
BY JOE GARAVENTE
Special to the Times

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “HAMILTON — When Abe Chapnick immigrated to the United States from France in 1948, learning English was the first thing on the 17-year-old’s mind. “This was because I had a story to tell,” the 77-year-old Holocaust survivor explains.

On Friday Chapnick, who now lives in Howell, shared his story of loss, acceptance and love with eighth-grade students at Emily C. Reynolds Middle School in Hamilton. The students are engaged in a Holocaust unit for class, reading “The Diary of Anne Frank” and learning extensively about the history of the Holocaust.”

Christian Turks Fear Discrimination

By Jeremy Reynalds
Correspondent for ASSIST News Service
SAMSUN, TURKEY (ANS) — Christians in Turkey are living under a shadow of fear as the result of a violent backlash by nationalist hardliners.

According to a story by Laurence Lee on the Al Jazeera web site, there are about 120,000 practicing Christians, and while they are legally free to practice their religion, many say they suffer discrimination and persecution.

Al Jazeera reported that Orhan Picaklar, a Christian pastor, said he has faced the wrath of the hardliners as a result of his ministry.

According to Al Jazeera, towns like Samsun, in the Black Sea region, where Picalkar works, have traditionally been nationalistic, religious and filled with angry young men who don’t want to be told to change their way of life.

Picaklar was recently kidnaped by young members of a radical group who told him they wanted him to stop teaching.

“Our church was stoned, they tried to kidnap my son, they did kidnap me (and) they put our pictures on YouTube. They spoke to all our friends, bosses and relatives of everyone who come to our church, so as to distance them from us,” Picalkar told Al Jazeera.

He added, “They say we have prostitutes in the church; they blame us for being subversive elements.”

Despite police protection, Al Jazeera reported that Picaklar still fears for his life and says his telephone conversations are being tapped.

Pickler told Al Jazeera that national fundamentalists have threatened his friends and relatives in the past, and even attacked the church where he preaches.

Al Jazeera said that violent attacks against Christian missionaries in the country have so frightened many pastors and their families that they prefer to stay inside their houses.

Al Jazeera commented that accused of actions which include funneling funds for the west and implanting agents in the region, the missionaries are on the receiving end of hardliners who believe them to be representatives of western powers with an agenda of undermining Islam.

A Long Hatred

Al Jazeera commented that mistrust and hatred of Christianity have been embedded in the culture of the Black Sea region of Turkey for decades, even centuries. It goes back to the days of the “crusades” and the First World War, when the Christian minority in Turkey sided against the then Ottoman empire.

As a result, Al Jazeera said, anyone considered to be a promoter of Christianity is basically considered as once again attempting to take Turkey away from the Turkish people.

Recent attacks on Christians in Turkey have been vicious, Al Jazeera said, including the torture and killing of a group of missionaries in the town of Malatya. Three youths are currently awaiting trial on charges relating to those attacks, but despite the arrests, Christians in Turkey remain concerned about their safety and well being.

The Christian Viewpoint

Al Jazeera reported that Christians claim it is the youth wing of Turkey’s hardline nationalist party which promotes the attacks.

However, representatives of the nationalist party told Al Jazeera that any form of violence against Christians was absolutely wrong, though they suggested that Christians could be working for western powers to undermine Islam.

Al Jazeera reported that Gokhan Ozekin of the “Alperen Houses”youth movement told the news service that Christian missionaries have definite goals for the region, and could be a cover for agents in Turkey.

Ozekin told Al Jazeera many people believe that the churches are really fronts for intelligence agencies such as the CIA and Mossad, and that they are working to undermine Turkey rather than serving as shelters for Christians under seige.

“Bin Laden plane claim bail denied”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A US judge has refused bail to a Northern Ireland man who allegedly told a flight attendant he was a terrorist linked to Osama bin Laden.
Aiden Simon Mackle, 44, of Portadown, is accused of interference with a flight crew and assault on a plane from Atlanta to Dublin last month.

The plane was diverted to Bangor, Maine, where he appeared in court.

The judge said Mr Mackle had admitted “he cannot drink alcohol without suffering serious consequences”.

An FBI affidavit alleged that he was smoking in the plane’s toilets.

It also stated that when challenged, the man became verbally abusive to a flight attendant, telling her he was associated with Osama bin Laden and was going to hijack the plane.

According to the affidavit, he later told an off-duty pilot he was a terrorist. It also alleged he then punched an off-duty flight attendant who warned him he might have to be restrained.”

“Missing FAA badges”
Thursday, Mar 06, 2008 - 09:03 AM

By NBC News Channel

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Aviation expert Denny Kelly says “the FAA badge of all the badges is probably the most dangerous of any other.”

An NBC5 investigation reveals over the past 5 years, 112 FAA aviation inspector badges have been stolen or lost.

Denny Kelly says “with that badge you can get in the cockpit in flight.”
Former commercial pilot, now private investigator, Denny Kelly points out those FAA badges can give a person free and uninterrupted access to nearly every secure area of an airport.

Denny Kelly says “the FAA allows you to not only get on one airline and through security it allows you on any airline any airplane anyplace.””

MIT Sensor Sniffs Anthrax, Smallpox in Minutes

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

By Mark Hachman

Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers have developed and licensed a new sensor, dubbed PANTHER, that can detect airborne pathogens within minutes, the university said last week.

The Pathogen Notification for Threatening Environmental Releases (PANTHER) sensor can detect the pathogens in as little as three minutes, MIT said.

The technology has been licensed to Innovative Biosensors Inc. (IBI) of Rockville, Md. In January, IBI began selling a product, BioFlash, that uses the PANTHER technology.

PANTHER is not alone among environmental sensors, but the university said the time to detect any bacteria or viruses was significantly smaller than rival sensors, which can take 20 minutes or more to detect the same organisms.

PANTHER can currently detect 24 pathogens, including anthrax, plague, smallpox, tularemia and E. coli, using just a few dozen particles in a liter of air.

The sensor actually uses modified human immune cells, called B cells, to detect the pathogens.

Admiral Fallon Resigns as Head of Centcom

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

WASHINGTON — Admiral William Fallon, the head of U.S. Central Command, which leads U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, is stepping down, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Tuesday.

Fallon claimed ongoing misperceptions about differences between his ideas and U.S. policy are making it too difficult for him to operate, Gates said, agreeing. He added that the differences are not extreme, but the misperception had become too great.

“I don’t know whether he was misinterpreted or whether people attributed views to him that were not his views, but clearly there was a concern,” Gates said.

The misperceptions relate to an article published last week in Esquire magazine that portrayed Fallon as opposed to President Bush’s Iran policy. It described Fallon as a lone voice against taking military action to stop the Iranian nuclear program.

“I think this is a cumulative kind of thing,” Gates countered. “It isn’t the result of any one article or any one issue.”

Fallon has had a 41-year Navy career. He took the Central Command post on March 16, 2007, succeeding Army Gen. John Abizaid, who retired. Fallon previously served as commander of U.S. Pacific Command.
