Troops Disrupt Weapons Facilitation in Afghan Province

WASHINGTON, March 28, 2008 – A coalition operation to capture a Taliban leader and disrupt facilitation networks in Afghanistan’s Helmand province March 26 resulted in insurgents’ deaths and the wounding of a civilian not involved in hostilities, military officials reported.
The troops were searching compounds in the province’s Kajaki district, looking for a Taliban insurgent linked to weapons-facilitation operations in the area when they were attacked.
“Coalition forces received small-arms fire from several insurgents armed with AK-47s, machine guns, hand grenades and rocket-propelled grenades during their search,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a coalition forces spokesman. “Coalition forces firing in self-defense during multiple engagements killed several insurgents.”
Coalition forces discovered a wounded civilian not involved in hostilities after the engagement.
“An adult female was wounded during a firefight between insurgents and coalition forces,” Belcher said. “A coalition forces medical specialist immediately tended to the wound, ensuring she was stabilized before transporting her and her husband (acting as escort) to a medical facility for further treatment.”
The coalition troops recovered weapons and explosives during the operations and destroyed them on-site to protect the compound’s residents, as well as to prevent the items from being used by other insurgents.
Four individuals with suspected links to the targeted Taliban insurgent and Taliban weapons-facilitation operations were detained.

DETROIT - A gas station owner charged with fatally shooting a rival gas station owner was found shot to death Friday in front of his southwest Detroit home. As Marathon Gas station owner, Hassan Masbouth, 51, rolled down the window of his GMC Yukon to talk to his wife, a shooter came out of the brushes and shot him, police said.

Secretly Installed Software Stole Grocery-Store Customer Data

PORTLAND, Maine — Unauthorized software that was secretly installed on servers in Hannaford Bros. Co.’s supermarkets across the Northeast and in Florida enabled the massive data breach that compromised up to 4.2 million credit and debit cards, the company said Friday.
The Scarborough, Maine-based grocer confirmed a report in The Boston Globe that it told Massachusetts regulators this week about the link between the breach and the illicit programs, known as “malware.”
The company doesn’t know how the malware — short for malicious software — got onto nearly all its 271 stores’ servers, Hannaford spokeswoman Carol Eleazer said.
“Virtually everything is possible,” she said. “There are still many, many aspects that we don’t totally understand.”
At least 1,800 cases of fraud have been linked to the data breach, with unauthorized charges showing up as far afield as Mexico, Italy and Bulgaria.
The breach has prompted concern in the industry because it appeared to be the first large-scale theft of credit and debit card numbers while the information was in transit.

German official warns of increased terror threat in Europe

( dpa ) - A top German state official, Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, warned Friday of an increased danger of terrorist attacks in Europe.
“The al-Qaeda messages of recent weeks speak a clear language,” the minister told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa at the end of a visit in the United States.
Hermann met with US security officials to work out agreements on improved exchange of information. As home to the largest footprint of US military in Germany, Bavaria has a particularly large number of targets at risk, he said.
Hermann met with officials of the national police force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); the CIA; the US State Department; and the Pentagon.
It became clear during the meetings, Hermann said, that the risks of attacks in Europe are currently higher than in the US.
“One must simply assume that there’s a whole group of people in Europe who are prepared to carry out attacks,” he said. . .
“The FBI has narrowed its focus to “about four” suspects in the 6 1/2-year investigation of the deadly anthrax attacks of 2001, and at least three of those suspects are linked to the Army’s bioweapons research facility at Fort Detrick in Maryland”
