“Palestinian Territories, Israel: Ariel pastor targeted
- requesting prayer for critically injured son”
By Elizabeth Kendal
World Evangelical Alliance Religious Liberty Commission (WEA RLC)
Special to ASSIST News Service
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “AUSTRALIA (ANS) — Ariel is a large town deep in the Palestinian Authority-administered West Bank. To Jews it is the capital of Samaria, while to Arab Muslims it is just another unwanted Jewish settlement.
Pastor David Ortiz, a Messianic Jew whose four oldest children have all served in the Israeli Defence Forces, has been living in Ariel with his family,
pasturing a small Messianic congregation and witnessing to West Bank Arab Muslims for many years. For this he has been shot at, beaten and stoned, while Hamas has issued a fatwa against him for the crime of leading a Muslim to faith in Jesus. On top of this, rejection and open hostility from radical Orthodox Jews can be both threatening and hurtful.
On Good Friday, a Hebrew Purim package was delivered to the Ortiz’s house. It looked inviting, but as Ami Ortiz (15) opened the package a powerful, professionally-made, shrapnel-filled bomb was detonated.
While Ami’s survival is nothing short of miraculous, he is in great need of prayer for healing. Ami’s body is very badly burned and heavily lacerated. Shrapnel tore through his neck; both his arms are broken; he has lost two toes; one eye was penetrated by shrapnel and might not recover; while ten pieces of shrapnel (hot metal bolts) penetrated his lungs. One lung remains collapsed. Ami is in a medically induced coma.
This family is paying a very high price for their faithfulness to the gospel. The bomb was so powerful it also caused extensive damage to the family’s home. Authorities are investigating. The culprits have not yet been identified.”

WARDEN MESSAGE: BRAZIL POSSIBLE YELLOW FEVER OUTBREAK

WARDEN MESSAGE: SECURITY PRECAUTIONS URGED IN BRAZIL
U.S. Consulate Rio de Janeiro, Brazil issued the following Warden Message on March 27, 2008:
This Warden Message is to alert American Citizens living or traveling in Brazil to the increase of Dengue Fever cases in the State of Rio de Janeiro.
According to the State Secretariat of Health in Rio de Janeiro there have been 28,233 reported cases of Dengue Fever in 2008 which have resulted in 54 confirmed deaths and an additional 60 are suspected. These numbers would rival the last significant outbreak in 2002 when 288,245 cases of Dengue were reported which resulted in 91 deaths.
Dengue Fever is caused by a virus, which is transmitted by a mosquito (AEDES AEGYPTI). This mosquito is dark, with white stripes on its back and legs, and smaller than a common mosquito. These mosquitoes breed in clean, stagnant water. The mosquito is considered a day mosquito. It bites during the day and likes warm, humid places.
Signs and Symptoms of Dengue Fever
After the infecting bite, dengue symptoms develop within 3 to 14 days (on average, 4 to 7 days). Victims typically experience a sudden high fever, headache, generalized weakness, and intense muscle, joint, and low back pain (hence the term, “break bone fever”). A subtle rash appears in up to half the people affected, although some have a bright red rash with scattered clear spots. Treatment is purely symptomatic. Dengue is usually self-limited, with an average duration of 6 days. Most persons with dengue do not need to be hospitalized, but those with persistent fever should seek medical attention as soon as possible
Hemorrhagic Dengue Fever (DHF): and dengue shock syndrome (DSS) are rare but severe forms of dengue that may occur in people who previously have been infected with one strain of dengue virus and are later infected by a different strain (there are 4 strains). DHF and DSS begin like classic dengue but progress to abdominal pain and vomiting. The most severe cases, if left untreated, can progress to bleeding at sites of minimal trauma, circulatory failure, shock, and death. DHF and DSS ordinarily affect only people who live in endemic areas, but there have been rare cases reported in travelers. Because of this, travelers who previously have had an episode of dengue fever and who will be re-entering a dengue-endemic area should be aware of the increased possibility of acquiring these severe forms of dengue and should seek medical attention as soon as symptoms appear. Travelers with persistent fever should be seen by a healthcare professional. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, an abrupt change from fever to hypothermia with profuse sweating, extreme exhaustion, lethargy, or mental status changes signal the development of shock and require immediate intensive care level medical attention.
How can you prevent the disease?
There is no vaccine for Dengue. Prevention is based upon taking careful measures to reduce the possibility of mosquito bites. Travelers are strongly encouraged to wear light clothing which completely covers arms and legs, and to apply an effective insect repellant, such as those containing DEET, to exposed areas of skin. The control of Dengue epidemics is based upon reduction of the mosquito population. Dengue may be more likely to occur in urban setting due to drainage issues. Eliminating standing water in your home and environment including flower pots, tires, puddles, non-chlorinated pools, etc., and screening windows, and wearing insect repellent are strongly recommended.
For further information on Dengue Fever, see the Centers for Disease Controls website at: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/submenus/sub_dengue.htm.
If you need assistance, please contact the Consular Section of the Consulate in Rio de Janeiro at Avenida Presidente Wilson 147, Rio de Janeiro, telephone 21-3823-2000, after-hours telephone 21-3823-2029.
For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Departments Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov/ where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings and Public Announcements can be found. American citizens traveling or residing overseas are encouraged to register with the appropriate U.S. Embassy or Consulate on the State Departments travel registration website at https://travelregistration.state.gov.

Report: Virginia Police Arrest at Least One in I-64 Shootings After Search Warrant Served
Friday, March 28, 2008
At least one person has been arrested in connection with a shooting spree along Interstate 64, a police source told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
The news came shortly after a search warrant was served at a house in Crozet, Va., Friday in the case.
The warrant was executed at a rural residence called Yonder Hill Farm in Albemarle County and was related to the six-vehicle I-64 shootings early Thursday morning, said Virginia State Police Lt. Tim Hopwood. He was tight-lipped on further details. A press conference was planned for 10 a.m. EDT on Friday.
State and local police have also been investigating whether shots fired at a bank building and in a residential Virginia neighborhood could be tied to the I-64 shootings.
Police said shots were fired at a Dupont Community Credit Union in Waynesboro, Va., between midnight and 2 a.m. Thursday the same time police were getting reports of someone shooting at vehicles on I-64 between Waynesboro and Charlottesville.
Bullets struck a window and part of the bank building, as well as a van parked in the lot. No one was injured.

Ongoing evaluation of Afghanistan annual ‘Spring Offensive’ by the Taliban:
I’ve found that this site has very good background and support for their observations in the past
http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/afghan/articles/20080328.aspx
March 28, 2008: As the Taliban announce their new “Spring Offensive,” they must also confront a public relations crises. A religious scholar has issued a fatwa condemning the Taliban for their un-Islamic activities (killing civilians, use of terror) and declaring them “out of Islam” (not Moslem). The Taliban continue to enhance this image. In the north, five de-miners were killed in an ambush. The attackers, who were apparently Taliban, fled when they realized who they had attacked. De-miners are very popular, and the Taliban was forced to make profuse apologies for earlier attacks......snip......
Last years Spring Offensive (which actually lasts until September), left 6,000 people dead, about two-thirds of them Taliban. But about 200 foreign troops were killed, along with two thousand Afghan civilians and security troops. The Taliban declared that a victory, but on the ground the reality was quite different. The Taliban lost a lot of popular support last year, and are increasingly seen as another bunch of bad guys trying to take over.

U.S. Jets Drop Bombs in Basra, Green Zone Hit With More Rocket or Mortar Attacks
Friday, March 28, 2008
BAGHDAD A British military spokesman in Basra says U.S. warplanes have carried out at least two airstrikes overnight in Iraq’s southern oil port.
Maj. Tom Holloway says jets have been providing air support since clashes between Shiite militias and Iraqi forces erupted in the southern oil port on Monday, but it’s the first time bombs have been dropped.
Iraqis have been in control of security in Basra since the British withdrew last December, but Britain maintains troops there to provide assistance when needed.
Iraqi police say clashes between Shiite militants and government security forces have resumed in at least two cities south of Baghdad.
The fighting on Friday comes as the fortified Green Zone in Iraq’s capital has again come under attack by rockets or mortars.
A thick cloud of smoke was seen over the zone Friday about 2:30 p.m., shortly after two rounds hit. It was the day’s first attack on the area.
The Sunni vice president’s daughter says his office has been hit during shelling of the Green Zone, killing two guards and wounding four.

FBI Focusing on ‘About Four’ Suspects in 2001 Anthrax Attacks
Friday, March 28, 2008
By Catherine Herridge and Ian McCaleb
WASHINGTON The FBI has narrowed its focus to “about four” suspects in the 6 1/2-year investigation of the deadly anthrax attacks of 2001, and at least three of those suspects are linked to the Armys bioweapons research facility at Fort Detrick in Maryland, FOX News has learned.
Among the pool of suspects are three scientists a former deputy commander, a leading anthrax scientist and a microbiologist linked to the research facility, known as USAMRIID.
The FBI has collected writing samples from the three scientists in an effort to match them to the writer of anthrax-laced letters that were mailed to two U.S. senators and at least two news outlets in the fall of 2001, a law enforcement source confirmed.
The anthrax attacks began shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, further alarming a nation already reeling from the deaths of 3,000 Americans. Five people were killed and more than a dozen others were infected by the deadly spores in the fall of 2001.
A leading theory is that the anthrax was stolen from Fort Detrick and then sealed inside the letters. A law enforcement source said the FBI is essentially engaged in a process of elimination.
Much of the early public focus fell on a Fort Detrick scientist named Steven Hatfill, who is suing federal authorities for identifying him as a person of interest. Now the FBI is focusing on other scientists at the facility.
“Fort Detrick is run by the United States Army. It’s the most secure biological warfare research center in the United States,” a bioterrorism expert told FOX News.
Asked to comment on the likelihood that the anthrax originated at the facility, the expert said:
“It’s not suprising, except that it would underscore that there was serious security deficiencies that existed at one time at Fort Detrick the ability of researchers to smuggle out some type of very sophisticated anthrax weapon and in some quantity. And, nevertheless, it was possible.”

Jihad USA: Confronting the Threat of Homegrown Terror
Thursday, March 27, 2008
Law enforcement officials and security experts are warning against the threat of homegrown terrorism as several cases involving alleged American jihadists enter the courts.
“The public is getting complacent,” New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly tells FOX News. Kelly, who was the police commissioner during the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993, has developed a task force of counterterrorism officers trained to spot jihadists.
Although there has not been a major terrorist strike in the U.S. since Sept. 11, 2001, Kelley says the country cannot let down its guard.
“We can’t afford to be complacent in law enforcement, and I don’t think we are,” Kelly says in the new FOX News documentary, “Jihad, USA,” which will air at 9 p.m. ET on March 29.
Several terror-related cases now in the courts highlight this need for continued vigilance, experts say.
In Florida, the retrial of six of the “Liberty City Seven” is coming to a close. The group members, who allegedly plotted to destroy the Sears Tower in Chicago and swore allegiance to Al Qaeda on a secret FBI surveillance tape, were arrested in June 2006. Their first trial ended in a not-guilty verdict for one defendant and a mistrial for the other six.
In Washington state, the murder trial has begun for Pakistani-American Naveed Haq, who is accused of opening fire in Seattle’s Jewish Federation Building in July 2006, killing one woman and wounding five others. Haq allegedly said he was mad at the Jews and how they are running the country.
Two other cases are to enter court next month.
