Judy (hmmm?) Woodruff just had a report that Karl Rove had offered Nebraska Sen Ben Nelson the post of Secretary of Agriculture. Nelson is up in 2006...and facing a hard race from popular GOP Gov Mike Johanns. Nelson is among the most conservative of Senate Dems..Does this make sense, because Nelson votes with the GOP on most of the key issues..?
One Ag agent says to another Ag agent, why are you so sad? His reply, my farmer died. I'm sure this deal will also include several extra billion dollars funneled into the agency to make it sweeter.
Breaux has retired from the senate. He appears to have integrity and expertise......

He has the image of being a nice guy only because he has run for one office or the other since he's been old enough to hold office. Sooner or later, he catches a lucky break and moves up. Such was the case in 2000 when the incumbent's adult-dilenquent kid got caught in a motel room with an underage girl.
Dayton is as dumb as a rock and an embarassment to a cerebral state like Minnesota. When Bob Smith was still in the Senate, they competed for the honor of dumbest male member of that body. It is no contest now.
I'd rank Dayton as slightly brighter than Pat Murray of Washington or Barbara Boxer of California.
If the Democrats want to hold the seat, they have a shoo-in in 7th District Congressman Colin Peterson, a moderate Democrat. It is unlikely that Dayton would step down (he's risen to his level of incompetence), but it is possible that the DFL could encourage him to do so if the Republicans put up a formidable challenger.
I see his situation very much similar to the widow from Missouri-- elected first time by the sympathy vote; defeated second time because Minnesotans actually expect a show of brains and performance to keep the job.
Minnesotans are not as dense as Washingtonians in being content to let a do-nothing empty suit occupy one of their two senate seats based on party affiliation alone.
That's "Sphincter" insurance..... :)
Strategists are no longer lacking in the GOP, lets just hope the party knows how to use them wiseley and deploy them properly.

Its been tried. Chafee simply won't leave (even though he is pretty liberal) out of family loyalty and some other various reasons. He also knows that switching can only cause him harm, based on the Jim Jeffords model. Snowe is to dependent on the GOP, and needs them more then they need her, the dems, do not have as much clout, and even in the most polarized situation, can offer nothing that would be less then what she has now.
McCain essentially turned down the sweetest deals of all. Kerry (source newsweek, and confirmed by various dems) offered him the VP slot, and in addition, total and absolute control over U.S. forign policy as also a position of SoD (McCain did point out this is unconstitutional). Everything but everything has been offered to McCain and he hasn't switched.
Those 3 individuals are the 3 canidates everyone always talks about switching. None of them will, and its clear now Specter won't either and in fact (out of fear) may actually harden a little bit now.
The GOP has effectivly brought up just enough margin to force its moderates more into line, the dems, have no way to keep theres in line. Even the DU'ers are pessimistic of taking back the senate anytime in the near future.

When you look at the history of todays left, which totally dominates the Democratic Party, it does not trace back to the moderates in the Scoop Jackson wing, no they go back to the radical leftists that ran riot over our campuses in the 60s and 70s, and this proffessoriate is all Democrat with very few exceptions, and none are Republican in University after University after University.
This radical Left uses Marx's theories as the foundation for their world view and it is apparent in their thinking, their critiques and their methods.
That is one reason why good men of conscience have been abandoning the intellectual left for years, men like Horrowitz, Abrams and Kemp.

"Who cares" about Ag as in who cares whether it is run by Nelson or a Republican. I'm sure that Nelson will not cause the nation's food supply to dry up or otherwise do great damage to the Ag Dept. I do, however, want his Senate seat. Grasp the difference?
You know what?? He is just confused enough to accept it.
Every Administration needs a minor cabinet secretary from the opposing party (which is what I meant about the Ag. Dept. - it isn't like we'd be giving the DUmmies State or Defense or Justice). If Nelson takes it he will never be heard from again and we take our 56th Senate seat.

I know...he seems just dumb enough to give up his power. It would be great for us..I saw him on tv yesterday..he got tooled..he realizes he better be in lock step or hes out of there in 06. Either way we win...

Stabmenow has a slight edge but there are good candidates out there and Repubs have better turn out than Dims in off years
Corzine, retires from Senate and runs for governor sadly the RINOcrats lose the open seat to the Dims, due to RINOcrat treachery and bad strategery.
For a total GOP pick up of 1 or 2.
It would be 56-43-1.
