That we would have a scale virtually unique to that flute (possibly matching some other obscure scale in some parts of the world, but not matching any known historically widespread scale in use). The problem with this non-conclusion is that since the hole-spacings discussed in this essay have only a one-in-hundreds chance to match a pattern of 4 notes in the diatonic major/minor scales, then this conclusion would require accepting a remarkable against-the-odds coincidence of spacings.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list. Thanks.Lecture Notes: Neandertals and Archaic Homo sapiens...at Neandertal sites we find both manganese dioxide and red ochre. These natural pigments are found as nodules that have been scraped to produce pigment powder to be mixed with oils and applied to a surface (e.g., ones body). We also see nodules of these pigments shaped into crayons for use in drawing images. We also see carved and engraved bone and ivory, sometimes smeared with ochre. These non-utilitarian objects are clearly symbols standing for some thing, probably an idea or concept (e.g., luck). Recently, we have even found evidence for music making among the Neandertals in the form of a fragment of a bone flute. So evidence for abstract thought among Neandertals is found in the practice of burial of the dead (implying belief in an afterlife and the continuity of the persons affiliation with the group even after death) and in the present of symbolic art objects.

Hey, are those anything like the "flutaphones" we had in grade school?
:') Those are plastic versions of the recorder.
Tangled strands of time...the work of the Paabo team is evaluated uncritically by Stringer and McKie in their article, essentially because it tends to support their biases and preconceptions about modern human origins. Other interpretations are possible. It should be noted first that molecular clock models are full of questionable assumptions. Leaving aside differences of opinion about the rate of base pair substitutions, how to calibrate a molecular clock, and whether or not mitochondrial DNA mutations are neutral, the fact that the Neanderthal sequence (and it should be kept in mind that there is - to date - only one) differs from those of modern humans does not resolve the question of whether or not moderns and Neanderthals were different species... A more convincing test of the implications of the Paabo data would be to sequence mitochondrial DNA from an unambiguously modern early European or better yet from alleged archaic and modem human fossils from the Israeli cave sites of Skhul and Qafzeh (supposedly modern) and Kebara and Tabun (supposedly Neanderthal). If the Israeli fossils all show differences with modern humans of the same order of magnitude of those between Neanderthal and moderns, that would be compelling evidence that all Upper Pleistocene hominids diverge from moderns by about the amount (evidence for continuity), and that the distinction between Neanderthals and moderns in the Levant at least is utterly without foundation... Those who would argue - like Stringer and Mickie - that Neanderthals became extinct without issue must show how it could have occurred without leaving traces of disjunction in the archaeological record and in the fossils themselves.

The Neandertal EnigmaFrayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

Or just a way to wile away the boredom of the rainy season or the snow season.
A little 'arrogant' on the part of Ariane Pinson, Ph.D. to assume that she can surmise so very much with so very little evidence.
I love reading about what they find but don't think they should attempt to read so much into the lives of Neanderthal's or for that matter details of undocumented history.
Isn't it the name of that electro group from Germany that Rush plays each Christmas?
LOL!

I'd like to go on record -- I did NOT add "JethroTull" to the keywords. But I would like to thank whoever did, it is most amusing. :')
